Broadband over power Line (BPL) technology has garnered significant attention lately due to recent advancements in solid state technologies and channel coding schemes. The successful application of BPL technology for in-home automation and networking has led to suggestions of applying BPL in other systems including ships. The application of BPL technology using the Shipboard power system (SPS) as a potential communications network for ship automation systems has been proposed, to achieve recent U.S. Navy ship management concepts geared toward reducing ship manning while improving operational efficiency. This paper presents an analytical model developed to examine the channel response characteristics and estimated throughput capacity of SPS cables. The work used a multiconductor transmission line theory based approach to model the channel response of SPS distribution lines and estimated the channel throughput capacity using a ldquowater-fillingrdquo communication technique. This work found that BPL using the SPS cables has a strong potential for use as a communications network for ship automation systems.

Increased distributed generation (DG) presence on radial distribution feeders is becoming a common trend. The existing overcurrent protection (OCP) scheme on such feeders consists mainly of overcurrent protection devices (OCPDs) such as fuses and reclosers. When DG is placed on the remote end of a 3-phase lateral, the radial configuration of the feeder is lost. As a result, OCP issues may arise which lead to permanent outages even when the fault is temporary. This paper presents a new approach that revises the existing OCP scheme of a radial feeder to address the presence of DG. The fuses on the laterals with DGs are removed and multi-function recloser/relays (MFRs) are added to address three specific OCP issues; fuse fatigue, nuisance fuse blowing, and fuse misoperation. The new approach requires no communication medium, provides backup protection for the DG unit, and allows the remaining laterals to retain their existing protective devices. The results are reported using the IEEE 34 node radial test feeder to validate the new approach and the IEEE 123 node radial test feeder to generalize the approach. The new approach completely mitigated the fuse misoperation and nuisance fuse blowing issues and most of the fuse fatigue issues that were present on the radial test feeders.

This study addresses the synchronization of hyperchaotic Chen system. By using only one output, a novel controller with a high gain observer is designed to realize the globally asymptotical stability of the error dynamical system. According to the Lyapunov stability theorem, the asymptotic stability of the close loop system is studied. Numerical simulations and theoretical analysis show that the controller is effective and feasible.

Thermal behaviors of transformers have a close relationship with the ageing processes of transformer insulation. In oil immersed transformers, feature temperatures such as top-oil temperature and hot spot temperature are recommended to be monitored online. To minimize the risk of failure and to extend the serving life time of transformers, both temperature rises should be controlled within certain range. However, it is difficult to monitor the hot spot temperature of the transformer. Commonly used method is to calculate the rise of the hot spot temperature based on top-oil temperature rise, as recommended in GB/T15164-94 (Chinese standard) and IEEE C57.91. Later on, electrical-thermal analogy models were developed and proved to be accurate in practice. These electrical-thermal models present heat transfer in the transformers as thermal circuits, where each component represents different thermal distribution in the transformers. General model for the thermal circuits were improved by combining fluid transfer theory into the exponential factors. This paper provides an experimental result which was measured from a 5 kV, 100 kVA transformer equipped with fiber optic probes and thermocouples. The paper also summarizes the most often used models for top-oil temperature and especially hot spot temperature calculation. Comments on both models are given in the paper.

Due to the influence of the local noise at the distribution level, the frequency curve obtained from the frequency disturbance recorder (FDR) unit is too non-stationary to observe its wave-front directly, which causes some problems in the event location estimation method. In this paper, a morphological filter (MF) is employed to extract the wave-front arrival time and the trend of the frequency curve. With the help of the MF, the accuracy of the event location method is greatly improved.

In this paper, a comprehensive cross correlation-based fault diagnostic method is proposed for real time DSP implementation. It covers both fault monitoring and decision making stages. In practice, a motor driven by an adjustable speed drive is run at various operating points where the frequency, amplitude and phase of the fault signatures varies with time. These dynamic changes are considered as one of the common factor that yields erroneous fault tracking and unstable fault detection. In this paper, the proposed algorithms deals with the operating point dependent ambiguities and threshold issues. It is theoretically and experimentally verified that the motor fault can continuously be tracked when the operating point changes within a limited range.

This paper proposes an optimal approach for design of a hybrid photovoltaic (PV)-wind generating system with adaptive-fuzzy controller, which is based on discrete optimisation and energy balance calculations. The total capacity of the renewable system is determined based on estimated annual power consumption, average wind speed and sun radiation. Different structures of each unit are examined, and a discrete cost function is defined and optimised to determine the minimum number of PV and wind units. To improve system reliability under different operating and environmental conditions, a self-adjustable controller capable of maximum power point tracking (MPPT) of PV units and blade angle pitch control of wind turbines is designed, and energy balance calculation is performed. Using reference adaptive tables, the fuzzy controller allocates each decision unit and activates the required number of units in each farm to supply the average demand power. Simulation results are used to show the validity of the design and system behaviour under different environmental and loading conditions. Main contributions are the inclusion of renewable system configurations, capacities, environmental factors and maximum power point tracking in the optimisation procedure, as well as the utilisation of an adaptive-fuzzy controller. © Institution of Engineers Australia, 2008.

The strong magnetic fields generated by reactors, which not only interfere other electric equipments' regularly running, but also are potentially harmful to substation employees' health, are the main electromagnetic contamination in substations. In this paper, a mixed finite-element (FE) model for dry-type air-core reactor, which considers the effect of eddy current, is proposed for calculation of magnetic fields. According to the analysis of this model, 7 times of the air-core reactor group region is suitable for calculation region. Based on this model, the magnetic fields distribution of equilateral triangle arranged 35kV reactor group in 500kV substation is calculated. The comparison between calculation results and measured values shows that the mixed FE model may accurately assess the magnetic field distribution around air-core reactors and provide theoretical basis for installation of air-core reactors for power department. Besides, based on the magnetic field distribution around air-core reactors, an early-warning mechanism can be established, which can provide safeguard for other electronic equipments running and the substation employees working.
