The increasing penetration of behind-the-meter PVs causes challenges to maintain voltage security due to the lack of distribution system visibility. This paper proposes a nonlinear autoregressive Gaussian process (NARGP) approach to fuse limited number of SCADA/AMI data together with historical pseudo measurements for distribution node voltage probabilistic estimation. The high-fidelity SCADA data are fused with the low-fidelity AMI and pseudo measurements by the autoregressive algorithm embedded in the Gaussian process. This allows us to use multi-fidelity data to achieve entire distribution system voltage visibility. Numerical results carried out on the IEEE 123node system demonstrate that the NARGP method is able to obtain high accuracy in estimating bus voltage and quantifying estimation uncertainties as compared to other approaches. © 2022 IEEE.

Synchronization Stability of Grid-Tied VSC With Control Limiters: Models, Solutions, and Boundaries

Existing studies on large-signal synchronization stability of the grid-following voltage-source converters (VSCs) have been focused on the phase-locked loop (PLL). Saturation nonlinearities introduced by current or voltage limiters, which can emerge during large disturbances, could greatly complicate the instability mechanism of PLL-synchronized converters. However, limited attention has been paid to such saturation-induced instability issues in prior work. This paper investigates the large-signal synchronization stability of grid-tied VSCs with full consideration to two typical kinds of saturation nonlinearities in the VSC's control system: the current hard limiter and the voltage circular limiter. The conditions under which the VSC may enter a saturated state are revealed. The impacts of hard and circular limiters on the system transient dynamics are analyzed separately. A unified differential equation (UDE) model that combines both kinds of limiters is proposed for quantitative analysis of synchronization stability. Subsequently, the averaging-theory-based analysis approximately solves the UDE model and provides the analytical large-signal stability boundaries of the system. The impacts of various factors, including operating conditions, PLL parameters, limiter thresholds, and active/reactive current control strategies, on the synchronization stability are investigated based on the proposed model. The effectiveness of theoretical analyses is validated via time-domain simulation and control hardware-in-the-loop tests. © 1986-2012 IEEE.

This paper models a platooning system consisting of trucks and a third-party service provider (TPSP), which performs platoon coordination, distributes the platooning profit in platoons, and charges trucks in exchange for the services. Government subsidies used to incentivize platooning are also considered. We propose a pricing rule for the TPSP, which keeps part of the platooning profit including the subsidy each time a platoon is formed. In addition, a platoon coordination solution based on the distributed model predictive control (MPC) is proposed, in which the pricing rule under government subsidies is integrated. We perform a realistic simulation over the Swedish road network to evaluate the impact of the pricing rule and subsidies on the achieved profits and fuel savings. Our results show that subsidies are an effective mean to boost fuel savings from platooning. Moreover, the simulation study indicates that high pricing corresponds to a low platooning rate of the system, as trucks' incentives for platooning decrease. © 2023 The Authors. This paper introduces a hierarchical modeling framework for hybrid power plants (HPP) to facilitate the operation of HPP in power systems similar to conventional generators (Congens) in the integrated multi-timescale optimal operation framework. To consider the uncertainties of HPP renewable power in the day-ahead scheduling, distributionally robust optimization (DRO) is used. To ensure that the state-of-charge (SOC) of energy storage systems in HPPs aligns closely with the planned value for long-term reliability, real-time SOC management is incorporated. In addition, an adjustable real-time control is designed for the robust delivery of HPP real-time services. Case studies performed on a revised IEEE 39-bus system demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework for HPP operation. Simulation results highlight that the proposed framework not only can help operators schedule HPP similar to Congens in varying weather conditions but can also maintain the frequency reliability of the system.

As a dispatchable renewable energy technology, the fast ramping capability of concentrating solar power (CSP) can be exploited to provide regulation services. However, frequent adjustments in real-time power output of CSP, which stems out of strategies offered by ill-designed market, may affect the durability and the profitability of the CSP plant, especially when it provides fast regulation services in a real-time operation. We propose the coordinated operation of a CSP plant and wind farm by exploiting their complementarity in accuracy and durability for providing frequency regulation. The coordinated operation can respond to regulation signals effectively and achieve a better performance than conventional thermal generators. We further propose an optimal bidding strategy for both energy and frequency regulations for the coordinated operation of CSP plant and wind farm in day-ahead market (DAM). The validity of the coordinated operation model and the proposed bidding strategy is verified by a case study including a base case and sensitivity analyses on several impacting factors in electricity markets.

Silicone rubber (SIR) has been widely used in the insulation of cable accessories due to its excellent performance. In this paper, pure SIR and nano Al2O3/SIR composites are thermally aged for 0-80 days at 200°C. The effects of long-term thermal aging on the space charge transport are analyzed. The results show that with the increase of thermal aging time, the accumulation of heteropolar charge of pure SIR and nano Al2O3/SIR composites gradually decreases and changes to the accumulation of homopolar charge. Compared with pure SIR, the space charge accumulation of Al2O3/SIR composites decreases significantly and changes little with the increase of thermal aging time. It is believed that when doped nano Al2O3 in SIR, the increase of carrier mobility and the introduction of metal oxides reacting with fallen free radicals to form stable compounds both lead to less space charge accumulation of Al2O3/SIR composites. © 2022 IEEE.

On the Equilibrium of a Class of Leader-Follower Games with Decision-Dependent Chance Constraints

In this paper, we study the existence of equilibrium in a single-leader-multiple-follower game with decision-dependent chance constraints (DDCCs), where decision-dependent uncertainties (DDUs) exist in the constraints of followers. DDUs refer to the uncertainties impacted by the leader’s strategy, while the leader cannot capture their exact probability distributions. To address such problems, we first use decision-dependent ambiguity sets under moment information and Cantelli’s inequality to transform DDCCs into second-order cone constraints. This simplifies the game model by eliminating the probability distributions. We further prove that there exists at least one equilibrium point for this game by applying Kakutani’s fixed-point theorem. Finally, a numerical example is provided to show the impact of DDUs on the equilibrium of such game models. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In existing protection and monitoring system of substation(S-PMS), there are compatibility problems between hardware and software or between software-hardware combinations and systems, including differences in communication protocols between different manufacturers and differences in system adaptation. Compatibility issues have become a growing focus area for the power industry. This paper proposes a method to evaluates the compatibility of the protection and monitoring system of substation based on the G1 and expert investigation, for the existing or unbuilt substations. In detail, Firstly, according to the compatibility requirements of the substation protection and monitoring system, corresponding indicators are proposed and a comprehensive compatibility evaluation model is constructed. Secondly, based on the comprehensive evaluation model, the evaluation results of typical stations without domestic chips and optimized stations using domestic chips are compared to verify the feasibility of the proposed method. © 2023 IEEE.
