Efficient economic operation based on load dispatch of power systems using a leader white shark optimization algorithm

This article proposes the use of a leader white shark optimizer (LWSO) with the aim of improving the exploitation of the conventional white shark optimizer (WSO) and solving the economic operation-based load dispatch (ELD) problem. The ELD problem is a crucial aspect of power system operation, involving the allocation of power generation resources to meet the demand while minimizing operational costs. The proposed approach aims to enhance the performance and efficiency of the WSO by introducing a leadership mechanism within the optimization process, which aids in more effectively navigating the complex ELD solution space. The LWSO achieves increased exploitation by utilizing a leader-based mutation selection throughout each generation of white sharks. The efficacy of the proposed algorithm is tested on 13 engineer benchmarks non-convex optimization problems from CEC 2020 and compared with recent metaheuristic algorithms such as dung beetle optimizer (DBO), conventional WSO, fox optimizer (FOX), and moth-flame optimization (MFO) algorithms. The LWSO is also used to address the ELD problem in different case studies (6 units, 10 units, 11 units, and 40 units), with 20 separate runs using the proposed LWSO and other competitive algorithms being statistically assessed to demonstrate its effectiveness. The results show that the LWSO outperforms other metaheuristic algorithms, achieving the best solution for the benchmarks and the minimum fuel cost for the ELD problem. Additionally, statistical tests are conducted to validate the competitiveness of the LWSO algorithm. © The Author(s) 2024.

With the increasing penetration of photovoltaic (PV) systems posing challenges to power system stability, this paper investigates the effectiveness of grid-forming controlled PV systems in providing frequency ancillary services. The study implements the Virtual Synchronous Machine strategy, utilizing DC-link capacitor energy for inertial response provision (DCVQVSM), integrated within a grid-forming topology. To ensure power-frequency droop control, an additional control loop is introduced within the DCVQ-VSM topology. The efficacy of this control system is proved through simulations conducted on a simple two-bus system and a fully-electrified active distribution network (ADN). Both case studies demonstrate the successful operation of grid-forming controlled PV systems, highlighting their capability to influence power system frequency dynamics. The analysis underscores the significance of deloading PV operation in facilitating flexibility services provision, thereby enhancing the reliability and resilience of system operation. © 2024 IEEE.

The European directives focus on unlocking the potential of final customers in the clean energy transition. With the recent trend of rising electricity and petrol prices, coupled with reduced investment costs in low-carbon technologies, the installation of photovoltaic solar panels for end customers has become more profitable compared to previous years, leading to a shorter payback period. Additionally, to enhance citizen engagement in the integration of renewable energy sources, various forms of local energy-sharing models are discussed in the literature. This paper elaborates on the regulatory framework and policies at the European level concerning renewable energy communities, citizen energy communities, and collective self-consumption, with a particular focus on Croatia's perspective. It highlights the steps needed to accelerate the realization of energy communities in practice. Under current Croatian regulations, the profit from selling surplus community energy to the supplier cannot be directly remunerated to community members. The results indicate that community members could achieve 20% lower electricity costs annually if the surplus energy were directly remunerated. To avoid losing potential profits from excess energy, the paper models an investment in a community-owned battery storage system, aiming to increase community self-consumption and minimize the amount of energy sold to suppliers. It is shown that with a static sharing scheme, individual community members' costs can decrease by 11% to 16%, and by up to 20% with a dynamic scheme compared to cases where profit from excess energy cannot be directly remunerated to community members. © 2024 IEEE.

In the European Union, as well as at global level, energy efficiency is important in order to achieve energy savings and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This is driving growing demand for energy-efficient technologies and renewable energy sources, which attracts investment and stimulates economic growth. Housing buildings consume a significant amount of energy, most of which is used for space heating. Therefore, it is essential to assess the energy efficiency of the heating system, especially in terms of minimizing heat losses. This paper proposes a Petri net-based approach for modeling and simulating the behavior of a smart thermostat in a smart home environment. By accurately representing the thermostat dynamics and interactions with other smart home components, the model aims both to optimize the performance of the heating system and to reduce overall energy consumption. © 2024 IEEE.

The non-thermal plasma (NTP) technology has been shown to be effective at removing organic compounds from wastewater and gases. It was demonstrated that the efficiency of aqueous solution treatment by NTP electrochemical reactors depends on the interfacial contact between the solution treated and the plasma zone. This paper is focused on the analysis of non-thermal plasma treatment of solutions with high conductivity values. The wastewater, which has a high conductivity of 0.3,0.6 and 0.9mS/cm, was passed through a T-shaped plasma reactor with two inlets (for water and gas) and one outlet (for plasma activated water - PAW). The reactor configuration uses a pulsed high-voltage discharge, thereby decreasing the energy injected into the reactor. The evolution of pH, conductivity, hydrogen peroxide formation and average reactor power were studied for 4 different flow rates (5, 10, 15 and 20mL/min with A R as carrier gas at a flow rate of 4 L /min. Solutions with higher conductivity values were studied, but electrical discharge could not be formed at conductivities higher than 0.9mS/cm with flow rate of AR at 4L/min. © 2024 IEEE.

The main goal of the present work is to propose several high-performance electrical pulsed power supplies for non-thermal plasma (NTP) generation as an alternative technical solution to classical pulsed power supplies using a rotating mechanical pulse generator. The capacitive pulsed power supplies permit the generation of 50 Hz HV pulses from an AC power supply (usual AC transformer) at a double voltage of the transformer secondary. For the DC resistive-capacitive configuration the frequency can be adjusted. The discharge power can be modified by changing the value of the capacitors. The proposed scheme allows the parallel connection of two or more circuits that operate independently generating simultaneous impulse discharges. To assess the systems behavior, a Blue 137 dye solution treatment was performed. © 2024 IEEE.

The optimization of load flow analysis is crucial for the efficient observation of the impact of new power plants into existing electricity power systems (EPS). The advent of integration of new energy sources has reduced construction timeline requirements to 4-5 years, creating a lag in the development of supporting electricity infrastructure. This paper explores the spatial and temporal dimensions of EPS development planning, illustrated through the example of two new connection requests to a transmission network, with emphasis on importance of load flow optimization and the potential failure analysis to meet the (N-1) contingency criterion, which ensures system reliability during outages. This paper underscores the necessity of strategic planning in EPS development to accommodate new generation units while maintaining system stability and reliability at the satisfactory levels. © 2024 IEEE.

An attempt is made to propose a data-driven approach for detecting islanding in large-scale power systems. The method utilizes data collected by phasor measurement units (PMUs) to develop an equivalent model of the system. In this model, the system is represented by multiple centers of inertia (COIs) linked to a central point known as the center of gravity (COG) through fictitious reactances. These reactances, which are interpreted as the electrical distances between the local COIs and the COG, serve as a valuable indicator for detecting islanding. The occurrence of islanding can be identified by comparing the temporal trends of electrical distance variations across different areas. The effectiveness of the proposed methodologies is evaluated using simulated data from the 73-bus IEEE test system. © 2024 IEEE.

Deployment of renewable energy technologies continues to grow in recent years which is in strong correlation with climate-friendly commitments to accelerate the energy transition and reach decarbonization targets and net-zero emissions by mid-century. These circumstances have presented significant challenges for the oil industry. Therefore, some oil companies are repositioning themselves in the energy sector with investments in renewable energy solutions, energy efficiency, and other clean technologies. In that regard, some oil companies are considering switching from oil business to investments in geothermal projects on existing mature oil fields. The proposed methodology for oil-to-water conversion enables pre-feasibility evaluation of the existing geothermal potential for the assessed oil field. An important part of the methodology is a two-stage clustering approach for grouping similar wells based on temperature and spatial distribution. Additionally, a decision support tool was modeled in Microsoft Excel and Python. The focus of the tool is to provide possible scenarios for geothermal energy production using mature and abandoned oil fields and their infrastructure, expanding thereby the economic life of a reservoir. Based on different input data, 5 scenarios of geothermal energy production with different production technologies (doublet or deep borehole heat exchanger) for heat and/or electricity production were developed. The outputs regarding the production quantities, economic, and environmental aspects will provide insight into the optimal scenario for oil-to-water conversion for specific oil field. © 2023 IEEE.

The massive penetration of distributed energy resources (DER) encourages the provision of frequency regulation services at the distribution network level following large frequency disturbances occurring at the transmission system side. The availability of reduced-order or aggregated models will facilitate the coordination between transmission and distribution system operators. As there are no models that can capture the dynamics of diverse distributed technologies and their control systems by a unified single device model, this paper presents the single equivalent device based on the virtual synchronous machine (VSM) technology that can subsume the frequency response of different DER and loads. The validation of the proposed model is performed on the adjusted IEEE 9-bus system for different multi-energy systems. Simulated scenarios have demonstrated the accuracy of proposed aggregation with a maximum relative error of 0.1% as well as computational improvement of almost 100%. © 2023 IEEE.
