This study deals with the coordination of surge protection devices (SPD) in photovoltaic systems (PV). A PV farm model was developed in MATLAB Simulink with all the main components, solar panels, converter, grounding system, power transformer, cables in the DC and AC branches with their capacitances, and surge protection device throughout the installation. It was found that when lightning strikes the grounding system or in the vicinity of the PV installation, the coordination among SPD types 1, 2, and 3 is lost. Miscoordination can cause damage to several elements of the PV system, mainly the inverters. Finally, solutions were proposed to avoid SPD miscoordination during lightning strikes. © 2024 IEEE.

The key assumption of this article is that the liquid metal generated by armature melting will rapidly deposit on the rail surface [1]. Combining the calculation method for armature melting morphology [2], this paper introduces a calculation method for determining the distribution of the deposition layer on the rail surface. The evolution law of the deposition layer distribution on the rail surface was obtained by 49 launch experiments. Additionally, the distribution of the deposition layer was calculated based on the launch conditions. Compared with experiments results about the deposition layer from perspectives of distribution trend and thickness, the calculation results was verified. Analysis of deposition layers in the launch direction and vertical direction relative to the insulator during multiple launches reveals that areas with thicker deposition layers carry more current, leading the armature to melt more easily under the influence of Joule heating. Consequently, during multiple launches, the concentration of the deposition layer tends to increase, leading to a thicker layer overall. This ultimately results in significant alterations to the shape of the inner chamber. © 2024 Eindhoven University of Technology.

In addressing the challenges posed by climate change, energy poverty, and energy crises, there is an increasing focus on transitioning to green and fossil fuel-free alternatives, reflecting a strong commitment to sustainable development. The Smart Readiness Indicator, introduced by the European Union, aims to improve the energy efficiency of buildings, adjust operations to meet occupants' needs, and respond to signals from the electricity grid. Consequently, developing new methods for decarbonising the energy system has become essential to meet the energy demands of industries, businesses, transportation, and residential sectors. This necessitates a comprehensive understanding of the situation and the implementation of various actions to reform the regulatory framework, promote technological advancements, stimulate economic growth, and foster collective social efforts. This study focuses on customising the Smart Readiness Indicator methodological framework by adjusting the weighting factors of different domains based on the 'energy balance' method. Currently, the European Commission provides standard domain weighting values, however this study is focused on their tailoring in order to reflect specific climate zones. Utilising open data and consumption patterns, the customised weightings are applied to a typical Greek single-family house to demonstrate the differences and underscore the importance of tailored assessments for extracting more accurate results compared to the 'standard' methodology. The findings highlight significant improvements, especially in energy efficiency and occupant comfort functionalities, suggesting that tailored approaches can enhance the accuracy of SRI assessments. © 2024 IEEE.

The process of degradation in cable insulation is a major problem in cable engineering. This happens because high and medium voltage cables are often exposed to water and moisture. The consequence of water on the cable insulation system results in changes in properties and treeing. This paper studies the phenomenon of water trees in solid cable insulation and how their presence affects an installation which is powered by degraded cable via Simulink software. Alternating electric field and humidity are the main factors which lead to appearance of water trees and their effect is studied. In addition, two basic methods are analyzed which are used in the detection of water trees, namely the method of dissipation factor tanδ measurement, for which universal acceptable criteria have been established in the detection of water trees, and the method of DC leakage current measurement, for which some service providers have established criteria for assessing the condition of cables and have been universally accepted. The largest part of this paper shows the simulations which were performed in a single-phase system and a three-phase system using SIMULINK software which aims to study the differences in the behavior of a system with healthy cables and a system with degraded cables in the event of a fault, such as short circuit, lightning overvoltage, and in the event of interruption of the load supply from the network. © 2021 School of Science, IHU. This paper addresses the need for distribution system operators to effectively manage uncertainties related to distributed energy resources. We propose a probabilistic approach using Polynomial Chaos Expansion, allowing the operator to balance economic efficiency with system reliability by setting a pre-determined acceptable violation probability. This approach provides efficient computation and high accuracy in the representation of uncertainties. Moreover, we introduce a framework for integrating the capability of distributed energy resources aggregators to manage uncertainties through the uncertainty band commodity. This allows these aggregators to bid for both energy and a specified uncertainty range, thereby contributing to their active role in the management of system uncertainties. Our methodology fairly distributes responsibility for constraint violations among various stakeholders by employing two allocation strategies: one based on Shapley Value and another based on sensitivity factors. The proposed system significantly improves the overall decision-making process by considering both economic and reliability factors within the prequalification process of distribution system operator. © 2024 IEEE.

Point Cloud Classification Using Content-Based Transformer via Clustering in Feature Space

Recently, there have been some attempts of Transformer in 3D point cloud classification. In order to reduce computations, most existing methods focus on local spatial attention,but ignore their content and fail to establish relationships between distant but relevant points. To overcome the limitation of local spatial attention, we propose a point content-based Transformer architecture, called PointConT for short. It exploits the locality of points in the feature space(content-based), which clusters the sampled points with similar features into the same class and computes the self-attention within each class, thus enabling an effective trade-off between capturing long-range dependencies and computational complexity. We further introduce an inception feature aggregator for point cloud classification, which uses parallel structures to aggregate high-frequency and low-frequency information in each branch separately. Extensive experiments show that our PointConT model achieves a remarkable performance on point cloud shape classification. Especially, our method exhibits 90.3% Top-1 accuracy on the hardest setting of ScanObjectN N. Source code of this paper is available at https://***/yahuiliu99/PointC onT.

Emergency lighting systems are an essential component of building safety infrastructure and play a critical role in ensuring the safety of people during power outages or other emergencies. As energy efficiency and environmental sustainability continue to be a focus in building design and construction, there is a growing interest in developing emergency lighting systems that not only reduce energy consumption but also operate on zero electrical power. This paper presents a comprehensive review of emergency lighting systems, with a focus on energy efficiency and zero electrical power consumption. The study first examines traditional lighting systems such as incandescent bulbs and their limitations in terms of energy consumption and efficiency. Then discusses energy-efficient options (CFLs and LED lighting), which have significantly improved energy efficiency and reduced power consumption. It also explores the latest generation of emergency lighting systems (Tritium and Photoluminescent), which have zero electrical power consumption throughout their lifetime and provide long-lasting illumination without the need for external electrical sources. Additionally, the paper presents a detailed comparative study of the energetic, environmental, economic, and life cycle assessment of the different emergency lighting technologies. The results of the study revealed that the use of power Free emergency lighting signs not only reduces the installation and maintenance cost but also eliminates utter energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Society for Reliability and Safety (SRESA) 2024.

Contemporary society benefits multiple advantages from electric cars. However, there exist still many obstacles to common adoption of the electrically-fed vehicles related mostly to the battery-based energy sources. This analysis addresses the energy recovery in battery and hybrid electric vehicles during their gradual deceleration and emergency stop. Using the proposed classification of braking controllers, several solutions are considered related to the growth on energy saving. Here, intelligent braking systems with fuzzy logic and neural network controllers are compared and evaluated based on data collected in different institutions and by the authors themselves from real vehicles and laboratory test benches. © 2022, European Association for the Development of Renewable Energy, Environment and power Quality (EA4EPQ). Induction motors consume huge amount of energy, so their energy efficiency is an important topic. The efficiency determination methods of direct-on-line motors are mature and during the last decade efforts have been made to create a standardized way to also determine efficiency of converter-fed motors. Here the efficiency determination methods given in IEC 60034-2-3 are utilized using a modern induction motor with the rated power of 7.5 kW and compared with the sinusoidal supply results. In addition, the high frequency harmonic power is extracted from the measured active power and its behavior as a function of the frequency and torque is illustrated. © 2024 IEEE.

Identifying spatiotemporal differences in brain functional dynamics corresponding to two tasks is critical for under-standing how specific neural processes contribute to distinct tasks or cognitive functions. Traditional methods rely on imposing assumptions and limits on the location and timing of activities, while machine-learning-based methods generally lack offering interpretable insights. This highlights the need for new data-driven approaches to capture spatial and temporal differences in brain activity between two tasks, while also providing interpretable explanations of the neural processes underlying these differences. In this work, we formulate the problem of finding the spatial and temporal differences in the dynamics of brain function corresponding to two motor imagery (MI) tasks (left hand movement vs right hand movement) as a discriminative discrete basis problem (DDBP). We apply the data-driven asymmetric discriminative associative algorithm (ADASSO) to EEG data collected during these tasks to uncover the key functional components of the brain's functional dynamics that differentiate between them. Results suggest that hand movements are strongly associated with high-confidence activation in the motor cortex, verifying the effectiveness of the ADASSO algorithm in identifying the location and timing of cortical activities that distinguish between the two task classes. © 2025 IEEE.
