Scalable Δ -AGC Logic for Enhanced Electromechanical Oscillation Damping in Modern power systems With Utility-Scale Photovoltaic Generators

power systems with utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) can significantly influence the operating points (OPs) of synchronous generators, particularly during periods of high solar PV generation. A sudden drop in solar PV output due to cloud cover or other transient conditions will alter the generation of synchronous generators shifting their OPs. These shifted OPs can become a challenge for stability as the system may operate closer to its stability limits. If a disturbance occurs while the system is operating at the shifted OP, with reduced stability margins, it will be more vulnerable to increased oscillations, loss of synchronism of its generator(s) and system instability. This study introduces a scalable $\Delta $ -automatic generation control ( $\Delta $ -AGC) logic method designed to address stability challenges arising from shifts in the OPs of synchronous generators during abrupt drops in PV generation. By temporarily adjusting the OPs of synchronous generators through modification of their participation factors (PFs) in the AGC logic dispatch, the proposed method enhances power system stability. The proposed $\Delta $ -AGC logic method focuses on the optimal determination of $\Delta PFs$ in power systems with large number of generators, using the concept of coherency and employing a hierarchical optimization strategy that includes both inter-coherent and intra-coherent group optimization. Additionally, a new electromechanical oscillation index (EMOI), integrating both time response analysis (TRA) and frequency response analysis (FRA), is utilized as an online situational awareness tool (SAT) for optimizing the system’s stability under various conditions. This online SAT has been implemented in a decentralized manner at the area level, limiting wide-area communication overheads and any cybersecurity concerns. A Novel Trajectory Planning Method Based on Trust Region Policy Optimization

Trajectory planning method is a research hotspot in autonomous driving. Existing reinforcement learning-based trajectory planning methods suffer from unstable performance due to the strong randomness of network weight parameter updates during the training process. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel trajectory planning method based on deep reinforcement learning trust region policy optimization (TRPO). Firstly, in order to enhance the robustness of the trajectory planning method based on deep reinforcement learning TRPO, a TRPO-LSTM based decision model was proposed. More specifically, a long short term memory (LSTM) based state feature extraction network was designed and embeded into a TRPO-based decision model to enhance the ability of TRPO to extract information from the environmental state space. Secondly, in order to make the planned trajectory adaptive to the dynamic changes of traffic environment, we presented a novel TRPO-LSTM trajectory fitting algorithm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work aiming at applying the TRPO-LSTM based decision model in the trajectory fitting process to search the optimal longitudinal trajectory speed. Finally, the proposed trajectory planning method was implemented and simulated on the CARLA simulator. The experimental results show that, compared with existing trajectory planning methods based on deep reinforcement learning algorithms, our proposed method achieves a cumulative reward improvement of over 28.9% in the scenario of four lane highway, and has better robustness. Meanwhile, the proposed method can achieve a lower collision rate of 0.93% while improving the average speed and comfort of vehicle driving. IEEE

Long-term operation and switching of transformer on-load tap-changers can cause degradation and deterioration of the main contact material, even leading to contact arcing damage in severe cases. However, the arcing mechanism of the main contact during the switching has not been clarified yet. A magneto-hydrodynamic simulation method of main contact arcing has been proposed. The geometry of the main contact in transformer oil is simplified, and the simulation model of the arc temperature field of the main contact in transformer oil coupled with electric, magnetic, thermal and fluid fields is proposed. The dynamic evolution of the arc temperature has been investigated at peak currents of 2100 A, 1500 A, 600 A and 300 A, respectively. The results show that with the increase of the spacing between contacts, the temperature at arc core rises rapidly and then decreases slowly, and the temperature can reach 50177 K at 2100A. Due to the electron bombardment at the anode surface, the temperature at anode surface is higher than that at cathode surface under different chopped currents. The highest temperatures at anode and cathode surface can reach 4142.5 K and 4081.7 K respectively. © Beijing Paike Culture Commu. Co., Ltd 2024.

Improving the ductility of laser directed energy deposited borated stainless steel by increasing laser power

Borated stainless steels (BSSs) are extensively applied in the nuclear energy industry due to boron's excellent thermal neutron absorption capacity, but large and brittle borides formed during casting result in a low ductility. Here, a BSS was produced by laser directed energy deposition, and an investigation was conducted to analyze the impact of laser power on both the microstructure and mechanical properties of the deposited material. Fibrous borides with relatively low volume fraction in the overlapping zone resulted in higher ductility, while lamellar borides with relatively large volume fraction in the non-overlapping zone led to higher strength. As the laser power increased from 180 W to 330 W, the size of fibrous and lamellar eutectic borides and austenite increased significantly, the width of the soft overlapping zone increased by 2.27 times, and the elongation increased by 2.03 times, although yield strength and ultimate tensile strength decreased by 46.3 % and 31.7 %, respectively. As a result, these findings confirmed the feasibility of significantly improving the ductility of the as-deposited BSS by increasing the laser power. The work here provides a way to tailoring the mechanical properties of BSS produced by laser additive manufacturing. © 2025 The Society of Manufacturing Engineers

Decentralized Droop-based Finite-Control-Set Model Predictive Control of Inverter-based Resources in Islanded AC Microgrid

This paper presents an improved droop control method to ensure effective power sharing, voltage regulation, and frequency stabilization of inverter-based resources (IBRs) connected in parallel in an islanded AC microgrid. In the contemporary droop control algorithm, the distance between connected inverters affects the effectiveness of the active power-frequency and the reactive power-voltage droop characteristics which results in poor power sharing at the primary level of the microgrid. That is, high impedance emanating from long transmission lines results in instability, poor voltage tracking, and ineffective frequency regulation. Hence, in this work, we use a finite-control-set model predictive controller (FCS-MPC) in the inner loop, which gives efficient voltage tracking, good frequency regulation, and faster performance response. FCS-MPC is easy to implement in fast switching converters and does not suffer from computational burden unlike the continuous-set MPC and is also devoid of issues of multiple-loop, parameter variation, and slow response associated with conventional droop control methods. We derived the condition for bounded stability for the FCS-MPC and the proposed method is tested via a numerical simulation on three IBRs. The results show effective power sharing, capacitor voltage tracking, and efficient frequency regulation with reduced oscillations to changes in load.

Model predictive control (MPC) has gained increasing popularity in the control of motor drives and power converters. However, its control performance deteriorates when there is a mismatch in system parameters. This article introduces a novel neural-network-based predictive control (NNPC) architecture to address this issue. By means of a supervised learning mechanism based on the input-output data of the governed system, the established neural network can replace the original predictive model. In contrast to the standard MPC controller that uses constant parameters to predict future behaviors, the advantage of the proposed method lies in the fact that it can learn the non-linearity of the system and adapt to the parameter perturbations. Consequently, NNPC enhances robustness against parameter variations while maintaining the superior performance of the conventional MPC method. Finally, the proposed method is validated through comparative simulations on a surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor. © 2023 IEEE.

Computing Riemann zeros with light scattering

Finding hidden order within disorder is a common interest in material science, wave physics, and mathematics. The Riemann hypothesis, stating the locations of nontrivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function, tentatively characterizes statistical order in the seemingly random distribution of prime numbers. This famous conjecture has inspired various connections with different branches of physics, recently with non-Hermitian physics, quantum field theory, trapped-ion qubits, and hyperuniformity. Here we develop the computing platform for the Riemann zeta function by employing classical scattering of light. We show that the Riemann hypothesis suggests the landscape of semi-infinite optical scatterers for the perfect reflectionless condition under the Born approximation. To examine the validity of the scattering-based computation, we investigate the asymptotic behaviors of suppressed reflections with the increasing number of scatterers and the emergence of multiple scattering. The result provides another bridge between classical physics and the Riemann zeros, exhibiting the design of wave devices inspired by number theory.
