The objective of the present investigation is to develop a suitable simulation method for dynamic analysis of rotary engines using Finite Element Method (FEM) and for flexible multi-body dynamics using AVL EXCITE. The engine analyzed is the current MAZDA gasoline engine with two rotors. The general approach and the tools applied are well established for reciprocating combustion engines, but the requirements concerning the simulation of rotary engines are very different due to the higher bearing loads, rotor guidance in the housing by a gear and the special requirements for axial movement of the rotor relative to the housing to ensure sealing. Detailed investigations are made for the simulation of the complex dynamics of the moving engine parts with respect to the interaction between flexible models of rotors, eccentric shaft and housing using axial contact between rotors and housing as well as detailed elasto-hydrodynamic bearing models (EHD) for the rotor bearings. Knowledge on the physical-chemical properties of diesel fuel is highly important for the performance of the fuel injection and combustion systems of modern engines. As real diesel fuels are complex mixtures of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, it is generally difficult to obtain their properties in the required pressure and temperature range, either theoretically or by experiment. Nevertheless, modelling the basic diesel fuel as a component mixture with a defined composition may be a suitable approximation of the reality. In this work, the mixture of n-decane (90%) and 1-methylnaphthalene (10%) is chosen as representative for thermodynamic and transport properties of diesel fuels [1]. The influence of these properties on the performance of two injection systems is studied by numerical simulation.

The target of dynamic simulation is to investigate complex engine dynamic behavior in the whole speed range under different loading conditions in the most effective way during Engine development Process (EDP). AVL has developed a method for transient run-up analysis by using the simulation tool AVL EXCITE. The main objective of this new method is the controlled speed increase by defining a speed ramp. Transient run-up analysis is of interest for different kind of analysis during the EDP, such as crankshaft dynamics and strength, low frequency vibration analysis, bracket strength and durability analysis, acoustic analysis, etc. By using this method the time required for simulations and thus the whole project duration is significantly reduced. Conventionally the speed range is divided in single speed steps and for each speed a separate transient simulation has to be performed. The number of these simulations depends on the required speed resolution. The run-up analysis integrates all these separate simulations in one single EXCITE run. As it is possible to analyze the complete speed range of interest continuously in time domain, all resonances can be detected and the complex engine dynamic behavior can be predicted. In addition to reduced process time a transient run-up analysis can give more detailed answers on how a particular parameter influences a specific dynamic behavior of the engine. AVL EXCITE is a non-linear flexible multi-body system solver. The components of the power unit are treated as separate flexible parts (subsystems) which perform either only small vibrations (e.g. engine block) or vibrations coupled with big global movements (e.g. crankshaft, connecting rod). The engine components are coupled with forces in the connections by different linear or non-linear joints, considering e.g. The non-linear behavior of the oil film in bearings and piston-liner contacts. Architecting a missile system for navy theater ballistic missile defense

He is responsbile for the integration and test of the SM-X missile including the third stage rocket motor (TSRM) and the kinetic warhead (KW) assemblies. He received his bachelor of science in electrical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1985 Prior to joining PMS 422 he was the project engineer for the shipboard targeting system used during the Terrier LEAP technology demonstration program. he was also tht project manager for the installation and integration of the new threat upgrade (NTU) and cooperative engagement capabilities (CEC) aboard USS Kidd (DDG 993) the first ship to receive CEC during its development test phase. Mr. Patel's other assignments as NTU development lead engineer uncluded providing development and technical direction for modifications to the NTU engagement system for Standard Missile II and III/IIIA compability. kathrin Kjos:is the program development team leader for Hughes Missile Systems Company. She worked on the initial flight demonstraction phase of the program integrating the kill vehicle and advanced solid axial stage into the SM2 Block III ER missile and served as co-chair of the System Safety Working Group. She has thirteen years of experience in system engineering. Previous experience includes missile systems engineering for the Advanced Air-to-Air Missile (AAAM) as well as for laser and radar surveillance systems. While most of the theater ballistic missiles (TBM) in threat countries' inventories are of the shorter range SCUD varieties, mid- to long-range versions are currently in development in a number of third world countries. Threat potential exists in the following three battle spaces: endo-atmosphere (0-30 km), high endo-atmosphere (30-70 km) and exo-atmosphere (greater than 70 km). The inherent short range and low speed of endo-atmospheric threats match well with capabilities of SM-2 Block IVA, which equips the Navy with an area defense capability The exo-atmospheric TBMs are longer range and can threaten more targets which may be widely dispersed. Their higher velocities reduce response times dramatically Therefore, exo-atmospheric TBMs create the need for Standard Missile-3 (SM-3), which provides the Navy with theater wide defense capability. Defining its area and theater wide systems as clearly endo-atmospheric and exo-atmospheric systems allows the Navy to use derivatives of the Standard Missile Block IV to take full advantage of the conditions associated with each of these operating zones. Use of an existing missile and ship system baseline also allows use of the existing interface structure to minimize cost. To counter the endo-atmospheric TBMs, the SM-2 BLK TVA upgrades include an advanced imaging infrared (IIR) seeker, an improved fast-reaction auto pilot and a forward looking RE all in the same volume as the existing missile. The highly responsive SM-2 Block IVA missile, complemented with Aegis weapons systems modifications, provides capability against enemy aircraft and cruise missiles, as well as TBMs. Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) replaces the SM-2 Block TV warhead, radar and guidance section with a boosted third stage and an advanced kinetic warhead (KW). Operation in the exo-atmospheric region permits a KW design with autonomous guidance control and divert thrusters for high maneuverability and has the capability of achieving very high interceptor velocities.
