Evaluation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in home kitchens and bathrooms: Is there a link between home disinfectant use and antibiotic resistance?

Objective: To determine the relationship between home disinfectant use and the prevalence of antibiotic resistance among environmental isolates of human pathogens. Methods: Bacteria were cultured from 5 kitchen and 5 bathroom sites using quantitative methods. Antibiotic susceptibility was determined by standard methods. Home disinfectant use was assessed via a questionnaire. Results: The overall total mean log₁₀ counts (total CFU) for the kitchen and bathroom were 4.31 and 4.88, respectively. Gram-positive bacteria were more common in the bathroom (4.05) than in the kitchen (3.60), while Gram-negative bacilli were more common in the kitchen (4.23) than in the bathroom (3.86). The sink and bath drains were the most contaminated sites with 6.16-log₁₀ of total CFU and 6.6-log₁₀ in the kitchen and bathroom, respectively. Households reported cleaning frequency with a variety of commercial products. Most respondents used antibacterial products (eg, soaps, surface disinfectants) in the home. Antibiotic-resistant pathogens were infrequently isolated in the homes evaluated. Conclusions: Compared to pathogens causing community-acquired clinical infections in the ICARE study, pathogens isolated from households are less likely to demonstrate antibiotic resistance. In addition, no relationship between antibacterial use or frequency of cleaning or disinfection and antibiotic resistance was revealed. © 2023 Association for Professionals in Infection control and Epidemiology, Inc.

Objective: Assess trusted sources of information, perceived message effectiveness, and preferred dissemination strategies regarding adolescent HPV vaccination among U.S. Vietnamese parents. Methods: Data came from an observational, explanatory sequential mixed-methods study with U.S. Vietnamese parents of adolescents (408 survey participants;32 interview participants). Surveys and interviews were conducted in both Vietnamese and English. Mixed-methods data were integrated and analyzed for confirmation, expansion, or discordance. Results: Both quantitative and qualitative findings confirm high trust in HPV vaccination information from providers, government agencies, and cancer organizations. Messages perceived as effective emphasize vaccine safety, experts' endorsement, importance of vaccination prior to HPV exposure, and preventable cancers. Qualitative findings expanded quantitative results, demonstrating a desire for evidence-based information in the Vietnamese language and addressing cultural concerns (e.g., effectiveness or potential side effects specific to Vietnamese adolescents, whether parents should delay HPV vaccination for Vietnamese adolescents). Quantitative and qualitative findings were incongruent about whether parents would trust information about HPV vaccination that is disseminated via social media. Conclusion: We identified credible messengers, feasible strategies, and elements of impactful messages for interventions to increase adolescent HPV vaccination for U.S. Vietnamese. Innovation: We focus on a high-risk, underserved population and integrate mixed-methods design and analysis. © 2023 The Authors

Background: The African Region Monitoring Vaccine Effectiveness network (AFRO-MoVE) was established by the World Health Organization Regional Office for Africa in March 2021 to support implementation of COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness studies in the region. Objectives: Primary goals of the evaluation were to assess how AFRO-MoVE addressed its objectives supporting regional vaccine effectiveness (VE) studies, to describe challenges and opportunities, and make recommendations to strengthen future efforts related to regional VE research. Methods: From September 2023 through June 2024, a mixed-methods approach was employed to synthesize information from: (1) documentation provided by AFRO-MoVE;(2) a standardized study review tool;(3) an electronic stakeholder survey;and (4) a series of key informant interviews. Data were collected and exported via REDCap and summarized using Microsoft Excel. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the qualitative data. Perceived challenges were summarized together with perceived support by the network in addressing each challenge. Results: AFRO-MoVE provided support to ten VE studies, including support for protocol development, study implementation, data management, and analysis, while also facilitating knowledge exchange and experience sharing among study implementers. While respondents reported strengthened capacity for VE studies at the national and regional levels in these areas, enrollment of SARS-CoV-2 positive cases was challenging, due to a decline in reported cases in network countries in mid-2022, when many studies were launched. These challenges contributed to a lack of published VE estimates from network study sites in time to inform vaccine policy. Conclusion: AFRO-MoVE technical assistance and financial support was viewed positively by network members and contributed to increased capacity for conducting VE studies in the region. Background People living with HIV (PLHIV) with viral hepatitis C (HCV) co-infection have higher risk of liver failure and mortality. Globally, >2 million people globally have HIV/HCV co-infections. Central Asia is one of the regions most affected by HCV. Since 2018, Kyrgystan has provided HCV treatment free of charge to 427 PLHIV. We analyzed factors associated with HCV treatment success among PLHIV in Kyrgystan.

Background Understanding the evolution of circadian rhythm dysfunction and psychopathology in the high-risk population has important implications for the prevention of bipolar ***,some of the previous studies on the emergence of psychopathologies and circadian dysfunction among high-risk populations were inconsistent and *** To examine the prevalence rates of sleep and circadian dysfunctions,mental disorders and their symptoms in the offspring of parents with(O-BD)and without bipolar disorder(O-control).Methods The study included 191 O-BD and 202 O-control subjects aged 6-21 years from the Greater Bay Area,*** diagnoses and symptoms of sleep/circadian rhythm and mental disorders were assessed by the Diagnostic Interview for Sleep Patterns and Disorders,and the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children-Present and Lifetime Version,*** estimating equations and shared frailty proportional hazards models of survival analysis were applied to compare the outcomes in the *** Adjusting for age,sex and region of recruitment,there was a significantly higher risk of delayed sleep phase symptoms(9.55%vs 2.58%,adjusted OR:4.04)in O-BD than in O-control.O-BD had a nearly fivefold higher risk of mood disorders(11.70%vs 3.47%,adjusted OR:4.68)and social anxiety(6.28%vs 1.49%,adjusted OR:4.70),a fourfold higher risk of depressive disorders(11.17%vs 3.47%,adjusted OR:3.99)and a threefold higher risk of mood symptoms(20.74%vs 10.40%,adjusted OR:2.59)than *** analysis revealed that O-BD children(aged under 12 years)had a nearly 2-fold higher risk of any mental and behavioural symptoms than O-control,while there was a nearly 4-fold higher risk of delayed sleep phase symptoms,a 7.5-fold higher risk of social anxiety and a 3-fold higher risk of mood symptoms in O-BD adolescents(aged 12 years and over).Conclusions There was an increase in delayed sleep phase symptoms in O-BD

Trends in seizures of powders and pills containing illicit fentanyl in the United States, 2018 through 2021

Background: Prevalence of fentanyl-laced counterfeit prescription pills has been increasing in the US, possibly placing a wider population at risk for unintentional exposure. We aimed to determine whether there have been shifts in the number of fentanyl seizures and in the form of fentanyl seized in the US. Methods: We examined quarterly national seizure data from High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas to determine the number of drug seizures in the US containing fentanyl from January 2018 through December 2021. Generalized additive models were used to estimate trends in the number and weight of pill and powder seizures containing fentanyl. Results: There was an increase both in the number of fentanyl-containing powder seizures (from 424 in 2018 Quarter 1 [Q1] to 1539 in 2021 Quarter 4 [Q4], beta = 0.94, p < 0.001) and in the number of pill seizures (from 68 to 635, beta = 0.96, p < 0.01). The proportion of pills to total seizures more than doubled from 13.8% in 2018 Q1 to 29.2% in 2021 Q4 (beta = 0.92, p < 0.001). Weight of powder fentanyl seizures increased from 298.2 kg in 2018 Q1 to 2416.0 kg in 2021 Q4 (beta = 1.12, p = 0.01);the number of pills seized increased from 42,202 in 2018 Q1 to 2,089,186 in 2021 Q4 (beta = 0.90, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Seizures of drugs containing fentanyl have been increasing in the US. Given that over a quarter of fentanyl seizures are now in pill form, people who obtain counterfeit pills such as those disguised as oxycodone or alprazolam are at risk for unintentional exposure to fentanyl.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is one of the most common health conditions reported among persons exposed to the dust, debris and chemicals after the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States. In the 9/11-exposed population, GERD is often found to be co-morbid with other conditions, such as asthma, post-traumatic stress disorder, and obesity. High-quality clinical practice guidelines for GERD are available from the American College of Gastroenterology. GERD diagnostic services and medically necessary treatment are covered by the WTC Health program for persons who meet eligibility criteria.

Postdoctoral training positions are becoming more common in the human factors and ergonomics (HFE) discipline. However, conversations related to training in the HFE discipline have largely focused on undergraduate and graduate education. This panel assembles both postdoctoral mentors and former trainees who collectively have a diverse set of HFE-related postdoctoral experiences. By panelists discussing their experiences, observations, and recommendations related to postdoctoral training with the audience, the panel session will support HFE faculty and students in making more informed decisions about if and how a postdoctoral experience (either as a mentor or trainee) could be a part of their career development in HFE.
