Black women are exposed to multiple non-persistent endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) at higher concentrations compared with white women. Using baseline data from a prospective cohort study of reproductive-aged Black women (N= 751), we characterized profiles of EDC mixtures and identified correlates of exposure. At baseline, we quantified biomarkers of 16 phthalates, 7 phenols, 4 parabens, and triclocarban in urine and collected covariate data through self-administered questionnaires and interviews. We used principal component analysis (PCA) and k- means clustering to describe EDC mixture profiles. Associations between correlates and PCs were estimated as the mean difference (β) in PC scores, while associations between correlates and cluster membership were estimated as the odds ratio (OR) of cluster membership with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Personal care product use was consistently associated with profiles of higher biomarker concentrations of non-persistent EDCs. Use of nail polish, feminine hygiene products, and sunscreen was associated with a mixture of phthalate and some phenol biomarkers using both methods. Current vaginal ring use was strongly associated with higher concentrations of high molecular weight phthalate biomarkers (from k- means clustering: OR= 2.42, 95% CI= 1.28, 4.59;from PCA: β= -0.32, 95% CI= -0.71, 0.07). Several dietary, reproductive, and demographic correlates were also associated with mixtures of EDC biomarkers. These findings suggest that personal care product use may be a main source of exposure to multiple non-persistent EDCs among reproductive-aged Black women, and that targeted strategies (e.g., reducing use of certain products or canned food consumption) should be implemented to reduce exposure to multiple EDCs among Black women. © 2022, The Authors. Objectives: To evaluate changes in the age at menarche in Asian populations. Study design: Retrospective cohort study. Methods: We included 548,830 women from six countries in Asia. The data were sourced from 20 cohorts participating in the Asia Cohort Consortium (ACC) and two additional cohort studies: Japan Multi-institutional Collaborative Cohorts (J-MICC), and Japan Nurse Health Study (JNHS) with data on age at menarche. Joinpoint regression was used to evaluate changes in age at menarche by birth year and by country. Results: The study includes data from cohorts in six Asian countries namely, China, Iran, Japan, Korea, Malaysia and Singapore. Birth cohorts ranged from 1873 to 1995. The mean age of menarche was 14.0 years with a standard deviation (SD) of 1.4 years, ranged from 12.6 to 15.5 years. Over 100 years age at menarche showed an overall decrease in all six countries. China showed a mixed pattern of decrease, increase, and subsequent decrease from 1926 to 1960. Iran and Malaysia experienced a sharp decline between about 1985 and 1990, with APC values of −4.48 and −1.24, respectively, while Japan, South Korea, and Singapore exhibited a nearly linear decline since the 1980s, notably with an APC of −3.41 in Singapore from 1993 to 1995. Conclusions: Overall, we observed a declining age at menarche, while the pace of the change differed by country. Additional long-term observation is needed to examine the contributing factors of differences in trend across Asian countries. The study could serve as a tool to strengthen global health campaigns. © 2024 The Royal Society for Public Health

Background: Taiwan, deeply impacted by the 2003 SARS outbreak, promptly implemented rigorous infection control and prevention (ICP) measures in January 2020 to combat the global COVID-19 pandemic. This cross-sectional serologic study was conducted among healthcare workers (HCWs) in a tertiary care hospital in Taiwan from August 1, 2022, to February 28, 2023. The study aimed to assess HCWs’ antibody responses to COVID-19 vaccination against Omicron subvariants BA.1, BA.4, and BA.5, considering variations in prior infection. Additionally, it evaluated the effectiveness of ICP and vaccination policies within the hospital setting in Taiwan. Methods: A cross-sectional serology study was conducted in Taiwan to investigate the seroprevalence rates of Omicron subvariants BA.1, BA.4, and BA.5 among HCWs. A total of 777 HCWs participated in this study. A structured questionnaire was collected to obtain the epidemiological characteristics and risk factors for potential exposure. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to detect antibody responses. Serum samples were selected for protection against Omicron subvariants BA.1, BA.4, and BA.5 by using a pseudotyped-based neutralization assay. Results: More than 99% of the participants had received SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. Overall, 57.7% had been infected with SARS-CoV-2, with some being asymptomatic. The SARS-CoV-2 Anti-Spike S1 protein IgG (Anti-S) distribution was 40,000 AU/mL for 20.2% (157/777) of participants, with a mean ± standard deviation of 23,442 ± 22,086. The decay curve for Anti-S was less than 20,000 AU/ml after 120 days. The probability curve of 50% neutralization showed an Anti-S of 55,000 AU/ml. The optimum Anti-S was 41,328 AU/mL (equal to 5,869 WHO’s standard BAU/mL), with 86.1% sensitivity and 63.5% specificity. Conclusions: In this significant study, 20.2% of HCWs achieved seroprotection against Omicron subvariants BA.1, BA.4, and BA.5. Background Healthcare workers experienced substantial work overload and stress during the COVID-19 response. Increase in prevalence of mental health conditions among healthcare workers have been reported globally. Low-resource settings, such as Tajikistan, experienced additional challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic and have scare resources to mitigate mental health consequences. To inform program planning, we aimed to determine prevalence of depression, associated factors, and care gap among healthcare workers.

Obesity, Dietary inflammation, and Frailty among Older Adults: Evidence from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

Knowledge related to the relationship between obesity and frailty is limited. This study aimed to investigate associations between obesity, dietary inflammation, and frailty among older adults. Study data came from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007–2014) examinations of adults age ≥60 years (n = 7182). Dietary inflammatory potential was determined using the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII ^® ) derived from 24-h dietary recall. We analyzed independent and joint associations of obesity and DII with frailty to evaluate interaction. Multivariable logistic regression revealed that both obesity (Odds Ratio [OR] = 2.24, 95% CI: 1.68, 2.99) and moderately pro-inflammatory DII (OR = 1.68, 95% CI: 1.10, 2.58) were independently associated with greater frailty prevalence. A negative multiplicative interaction between obesity and highest pro-inflammatory diet also was found (adjusted odds in non-obese and obese were 2.07 and 2.37, respectively;p = 0.046). Results indicate the importance of considering obesity and dietary inflammatory potential when screening for frailty or developing treatments. © 2019, © 2019 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

Using 3D Imaging Technology to Accurately Collect Postmortem Anthropometric Measurements in Children Under 5 Years of Age

AbstractObjectivesThe Child Health and Mortality prevention Surveillance Network (CHAMPS) aims to identify causes of under-5 mortality in sub-Saharan African and South Asian surveillance sites. To address challenges in postmortem nutritional assessment, we evaluated anthropometry training and 3D imaging in the CHAMPS Kenya site. MethodsStaff were trained using World Health Organization (WHO) recommended standard anthropometry equipment as well as 3D imaging to collect postmortem measurements. Following the training, 76 cases were measured in duplicate using standard anthropometry and 3D imaging and were compared to 75 pre-intervention cases. Outcomes included data quality metrics [standard deviations (SD), digit preference, % biologically implausible values (BIV, Length-for-age z-score (LAZ) BIV = ± 6 SD), measurement reliability (technical errors of measurement, TEM), and accuracy (correlation coefficients and Bland Altman plots of standard vs. 3D scan measurements). We used both WHO growth standard and internal standardization to produce sex and age-specific LAZ. ResultsStandard anthropometry data quality improved as indicated by digit preference (all measures rounded to 0.0 or 0.5 pre-intervention vs. no preference post-intervention). When using the WHO growth standards, we observed increases between pre- and post-training LAZ SD (2.55 vs. 2.92) and % BIV (5.33 vs. 15.13). Internal standardization eliminated the % BIV, with pre-intervention LAZ ranging from-1.78 to 2.27, and post intervention LAZ: –2.27 to 2.04, falling within the WHO ranges for biologically plausible values (–6 SD < LAZ < 6 SD). Reliability of length measurements post-intervention was high as indicated by low relative TEM of 0.53%. Accuracy of 3D imaging was high (R = 0.99) comparing post-training vs. 3D imaging for length; however, examination of Bland Altman plots revealed that on average 3D scans overestimated length by 3.87 centimeters.
