Background Since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020, > 1 million persons have died in the US due to COVID-19. While various research illustrated in-hospital mortality in detail, post-discharge mortality has not been well described. Data from the COVID-19-Associated Hospitalization Surveillance Network (COVID-NET) were used to describe in-hospital and post-discharge mortality among adults hospitalized with COVID-19 in the US during the first year of the pandemic.

Background: Chronic inflammation is associated with numerous chronic diseases and can be managed with diet. Aim: The purpose of this study was to examine differences in baseline characteristics and plasma inflammation levels between two groups of participants that participated in an intensive, lifestyle intervention or a remotely delivered intervention. This work also assessed the association between Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII)^® scores and participants’ inflammatory and metabolic biomarkers at baseline. Method: Ninety-five participants (61 intervention, 34 control) chose to enroll in either a 12-month intervention consisting of a face-to-face nutrition, physical activity, and stress management intervention or a remotely-delivered intervention (control group) focusing on general cancer prevention. The intervention group met at the University of South Carolina for classes and the control group had materials emailed to them. A quantile regression was used to compare participants’ high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and interleukin-6 levels. Multiple linear regression was used to determine the association between DII scores and biomarkers. Results: There were significant differences in age, body mass index, body fat percentage, and blood pressure between groups, but there were no differences in levels of inflammatory biomarkers. Values of interleukin-6 at the 90th percentile of its distribution were 8.31 pg/ml higher among those in DII quartile 4 compared with quartile 1 (p = 0.02). All other outcomes were not significant. Conclusion: Given similar levels of inflammatory biomarkers, participants opting for the control group would also have benefited from a more intensive lifestyle intervention focusing on reducing inflammation. © The Author(s) 2018.

Antibiotic pollution and the evolution of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are critical issues of global significance. Phylogenetic divergence of the microbial communities between the surface water and the sedimentary ecosystems resulted in a significant shift in the ARGs profiles between the two distinctive surface-water and sediments. Priority ARGs of Clinical importance;blaGES, MCR-7.1, ermB, tet(34), tet36, tetG-01, and sul2 were significantly increased in the surface water, while blaCTX-M-01, blaTEM, blaOXA10-01, blaVIM, tet(W/N/W), tetM02, and ermX were amplified in the sediments. cfxA was an endemic ARG in surface-water ecosystems while the endemic ARGs of the sedimentary ecosystems included aacC4, aadA9-02, blaCTX-M-04, blaIMP-01, blaIMP-02, bla-L1, penA, erm(36), ermC, ermT-01, msrA-01, pikR2, vgb-01, mexA, oprD, ttgB, and aac. Background Surveillance data from the Influenza Hospitalization Surveillance Network (FluSurv-NET) detected an increase over time in the proportion of hospitalized women of child-bearing age with laboratory-confirmed influenza who were pregnant. We sought to describe changes in patient characteristics to explain this observed trend.

The onsite next generation sequencing(NGS)of Ebola virus(EBOV)genomes during the 2013–2016 Ebola epidemic in Western Africa provides an opportunity to trace the origin,transmission,and evolution of this ***,we have diagnosed a cohort of EBOV patients in Sierra Leone in 2015,during the late phase of the *** surviving EBOV patients had a recovery process characterized by decreasing viremia,fever,and biochemical *** genomes sequenced through the longitudinal blood samples of these patients showed dynamic intra-host substitutions of the virus during acute infection,including the previously described short stretches of 13 serial TNC ***,within individual patients,samples collected during the early phase of infection possessed Ts at these nucleotide sites,whereas they were replaced by Cs in samples collected in the later phase,suggesting that these short stretches of TNC mutations could emerge *** addition,up to a total of 35 nucleotide sites spanning the EBOV genome were mutated *** study showed the dynamic intra-host adaptation of EBOV during patient recovery and gave more insight into the complex EBOV-host interactions.

The increasing threat of emerging infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance requires more efficient, high-quality research. Perpetual Observational Studies (POS) nested within a clinical research network can improve planning, quality and efficiency of interventional and observational studies, although real-life benefits and challenges need to be assessed.
