Vegetable and Fruit Consumption among Chinese Adults and Associated Factors： A Nationally Representative Study of 170,847 Adults

Objective This study examined vegetable and fruit （VF） consumption rate and its associated factors among Chinese adults. Methods Nationally representative data from the 2013 China Chronic Disease Surveillance survey were used. Dietary intake data, including VF consumption during the last 12 months, were collected. All analyses were weighted to obtain nationally representative estimates. Associations between VF consumption and other factors （e.g., meal frequency and physical activity） were examined through logistic regression analysis. Results The average fruit consumption was 102.3 g/day （95% CI： 97.0-107.6） and the average vegetable consumption was 350.6 g/day （95% CI： 339.3-361.8）. Over half （53.2%, 95% CI： 50.9-55.4） of Chinese adults met the VF consumption of 400 g/day recommended by the World Health Organization （WHO）. Rural residents had a higher prevalence of low VF consumption rate than urban residents [49.20% （95% CI： 46.2%-52.2%） vs. 44.0% （95% CI： 41.7%-46.3%） P 〈 0.01]. Old age （OR = 1.01, 95% CI： 1.00-1.01）, low educational level, low income, minority ethnicity （OR = 1.41, 95% CI： 1.15-1.74）, underweight （OR = 1.17, 95% CI： 1.03-1.33）, single marital status （OR = 1.20, 95% CI： 1.08-1.33）, low health literacy, irregular breakfast （OR = 1.20, 95% CI： 1.04-1.38） or lunch （OR = 1.58, 95% CI： 1.26-1.99） habits, and no leisure-time physical activity were associated with low VF consumption. Conclusion Only half of Chinese adults met the VF consumption recommended by the WHO. Low socio-economic status, irregular diet, and poor health literacy were likely associated with low VF consumption. National efforts and programs are needed to promote VF consumption.

Background: Mother to child transmission (MTCT) of HIV constitutes a major source of new pediatric infections in Cameroon. Objective: The aim of this implementation research was to assess outcomes and effectiveness of providing life-long antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV-positive pregnant and breastfeeding women (Option B+). Methods: From October 2013 to July 2014, HIV-positive pregnant and breastfeeding women, not on antiretroviral (ARV) prophylaxis and ART, were recruited from 22 purposefully selected health facilities in the Northwest and Southwest regions for a prospective, observational cohort evaluation. Option B+ was offered to participants and outcome indicators were measured. Results: Out of 680 women eligible for this assessment, 669 (98%) were initiated on Option B+. Retention-in-care was 90% (95% CI, 87.85 - 92.61) and 79% (95% CI, 75.20 - 81.88), and loss to follow up (LTFU) was 7% (95% CI: 4.95 - 8.90) and 15% (95% CI: 12.06 - 17.56) at 6 and 12 months respectively. Maternal mortality at 12 months after ART initiation was 2% (13). As of March 2015, 538 HIV exposed infants (HEIs) were enrolled and received postpartum nevirapine prophylaxis within 72 hours of birth and 84% (454) were on cotrimoxazole at 6 to 8 weeks. By 8 weeks of age, 498 (93%) infants had HIV DNA PCR test with 486 (97.6%) negative and 12 (2.4%) positive. Conclusion: In Cameroon, successful implementation of Option B+ increased retention-in-care to 79% at one year for pregnant and breastfeeding women and reduced MTCT rate below 5% for HEIs at 8 weeks of age. Long term retention, maternal and infant mortality and final MTCT rate after cessation of breastfeeding require further evaluation.

Background Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a significant cause of hospitalizations in older adults and typically circulates during the fall and winter in the United States. The COVID-19 pandemic and implementation of nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) including masking, improved handwashing, and social distancing likely impacted RSV circulation. To explore the pandemic’s impact on RSV seasonality and hospitalizations in adults aged ≥18 years, we analyzed laboratory-confirmed RSV-associated hospitalizations through the RSV Hospitalization Surveillance Network (RSV-NET) across four seasons.

This study assesses the causes and prevention measures of rabies through epidemiological investigation and analysis. A field epidemiological survey was conducted to investigate a case of rabies by fox bite. The onset of symptoms began 50 days after the bite. The patient did not receive standard treatment, rabies vaccination, or rabies immunoglobulin injection. The fox was killed on the spot. Saliva and pre-death blood samples were collected at different periods, and only blood RT-PCR tests yielded positive results. Wild fox bite is a major risk factor of rabies infection in Xinjiang Province, China.
