Aspiring to the idea that praxis opens up possibilities for transformation, this commentary reflects on the work of contributing authors to consider interrelationships between pedagogy, research, and praxis of community-engaged work to create change through the academic enterprise without losing sight of goals to support often-underserved communities and populations that anthropologists study. This treatment situates the accounts of community-engaged research in the context of the NIH investment in clinical translational research and explores the notion of engaging the community beyond clinical trial accrual while recognizing the vexed subject position of anthropologists in the employ of academic medical centers. The commentary then reflects on key terms from the contributors, questioning the objective of getting back to normal, the lived experience of intersectionality, and the challenge of centering root causes as we work to remedy disparities/inequities. Acknowledging the power of NIH as a sociocultural driver of academic medicine, the commentary positions anthropology as a disciplinary vehicle for moving between the individual and the social registers, ending with a reflection on critique as a form of praxis. © 2025 The Author(s). Changes in Perceptions of the Near-Home Walking Environment Among Us Adults—2015 and 2020 National Health Interview Survey

The built environments in which we work, live, and play can influence physical activity behaviors, and perceptions of these environments are associated with walking behavior. This study’s objective is to compare national-level data on perceptions of the near-home walking environment from the 2015 and 2020 National Health Interview Survey. Adults in 2015 (n = 30,811) and 2020 (n = 29,636) reported perceptions of walkable supports (roads, sidewalks, paths, or trails;sidewalks on most streets), destinations (shops, stores, or markets;bus or transit stops;movies, libraries, or churches;and places that help you relax, clear your mind, and reduce stress), and barriers to walking (traffic, crime, and animals). Age-adjusted prevalence estimates, prevalence differences, and 95% confidence intervals were calculated overall and by demographic characteristics. The reported prevalence of roads, sidewalks, paths, or trails for walking increased overall (85.3% in 2015 to 88.0% in 2020) and for many subgroups. Perceived places to walk to for relaxation, to clear your mind, and to reduce stress increased overall (72.1% in 2015 to 77.1% in 2020) and for all subgroups. Perceptions of crime as a barrier to walking decreased overall (12.5% in 2015 to 11.2% in 2020) and for some subgroups. From 2015 to 2020, perceptions of the near-home walking environment did not change, although perceptions increased regarding having roads, sidewalks, paths, or trails, places to relax, and crime. Continuing to monitor perceptions of the walking environment could contribute to progress toward national walking and walkability goals in the United States. © 2023, The Authors. Objective: To report the microbiological profile of the pathogens implicated in blood stream infections (BSI) in hospitalized coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients and to examine the risk factors associated with multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) causing BSI. Patients and Methods: Between March 2020 and September 2021, 1647 patients were hospitalized with COVID-19 at the American University of Beirut. From 85 patients, 299 positive blood cultures were reported to the Infection control and prevention program. The BSI was defined as 1 positive blood culture for bacterial or fungal pathogens. The following organisms were considered MDROs: methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus spp, carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales spp., carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa, MDR Acinetobacter baumannii only susceptible to colistin or tigecycline, and Candida auris. Results: We identified 99 true positive BSI events. Gram-negative bacteria accounted for 38.4 %, followed by Gram-positive bacteria (37.4%), and fungi (24.2%). The most isolated species were Candida spp. (23%), 3 of which were C. auris, followed by Enterobacterales spp. (13%), Enterococcus spp. (12%), S. aureus (9%), P. aeruginosa (9%), and A. baumannii (3%). The MDROs represented 26% of the events. The overall mortality rate was 78%. The time to acquisition of BSI in patients with MDROs was significantly longer compared with that of non-MDROs (20.2 days vs 11.2 days). And there was a significantly shorter time from acquisition of BSI to mortality between MDROs and non-MDROs (1.5 vs 8.3 days). Conclusion: Rigorous infection prevention and control measures and antimicrobial stewardship are important to prevent antimicrobial resistance progression, especially in low-resource settings. © 2023 The Authors

Regular pelvic exams after completing cancer treatment are critical for detecting endometrial and cervical cancer recurrence. Patients report high levels of distress and pain during exams. We conducted in-depth individual interviews with patients (N = 13) and providers (N = 10) to explore patients’ pelvic exam experiences and intervention preferences. Findings suggested that most patients experience exam-related distress and pain, and a telemedicine cognitive behavioral intervention targeting anxiety and pain would be acceptable and feasible for most patients. Findings informed PEACE (Pelvic Examination and Anxiety Coping skills for Empowerment) intervention development. Formative work is described, including a conceptual model, qualitative data collection and analysis, and session content. © 2024 Society for Menstrual Cycle Research.

Introduction: Quantifying disparities in social determinants of health between people with HIV and the total population could help address health inequities, and ensure health and well-being among people with HIV in the U.S., but estimates are lacking. Methods: Several representative data sources were used to assess differences in social determinants of health between adults with diagnosed HIV (Centers for Disease control and prevention Medical Monitoring Project) and the total adult population (U.S. Census Bureau's decennial census, American Community Survey, Household Pulse Survey, the Current Population Survey Annual Social and Economic Supplements;the Department of Housing and Urban Development's point-in-time estimates of homelessness;and the Bureau of Justice Statistics). The differences were quantified using standardized prevalence differences and standardized prevalence ratios, adjusting for differences in age, race/ethnicity, and birth sex between people with HIV and the total U.S. population. Results: Overall, 35.6% of people with HIV were living in a household with an income at or below the federal poverty level, and 8.1% recently experienced homelessness. Additionally, 42.9% had Medicaid and 27.6% had Medicare;39.7% were living with a disability. Over half (52.3%) lived in large central metropolitan counties and 20.6% spoke English less than very well based on survey responses. After adjustment, poverty (standardized prevalence difference=25.1%, standardized prevalence ratio=3.5), homelessness (standardized prevalence difference=8.5%, standardized prevalence ratio=43.5), coverage through Medicaid (standardized prevalence difference=29.5%, standardized prevalence ratio=3.0) or Medicare (standardized prevalence difference=7.8%), and disability (standardized prevalence difference=30.3%, standardized prevalence ratio=3.0) were higher among people with HIV than the total U.S. population. An Overview of Farm Investigation Findings Associated with Outbreaks of Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia coli Infections Linked to Leafy Greens: 2009–2021

Leafy greens are a reoccurring source of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) outbreaks. We summarize data from farm investigations following STEC outbreaks linked to leafy greens conducted by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease control and prevention (CDC), and state and local partners, during 2009–2021. Investigational and laboratory data on multistate STEC outbreaks linked to leafy greens were collected during 2009–2021 from CDC's Foodborne Disease Outbreak Surveillance System and FDA's Coordinated Outbreak Response & Evaluation Network. Farm investigation information was retrieved from the FDA Farm Investigation Questionnaires and Investigation Memos. During 2009–2021, there were 49 leafy greens STEC outbreaks;37 were linked to a specific type of leafy green. Traceback investigations were conducted for 25, and farm investigations for 17. Seven outbreaks were traced back to a single farm, and 10 were traced back to multiple farms. Environmental samples collected per investigation increased over time, and farm investigations since 2018 included a more diverse collection of environmental sample types. This overview includes a summary of the results obtained from the samples collected, including leafy greens, air, water, sediment, animal feces, and soil. The outbreak strain was identified in 6 of 17 investigations by genomic analysis, though sample and testing methods changed over time, increasing the sensitivity for pathogen detection. Collaboration between investigative partners improved the collection of samples and data through contributions from a diverse set of experts and identified possible contamination sources. Improved traceability in the supply chain can help identify single farms for investigations and focused product actions;continued grower outreach and education and adoption of regulations and best practices can help improve leafy green safety;and research to address food safety gaps can help minimize the impact of fu

Aluminium nano-powder has a small particle size, large specific surface area, and high surface energy, therefore when using it, the risk of fires or explosions is high. In this study, synchronous thermal analyser was used to determine the thermal reaction characteristics of aluminium nano-powder for various oxygen and nitrogen mixtures. The results showed that the oxidation behaviour of aluminium nano-powder could be considered to occur in four stages, according to the characteristic temperature points and polymorphic phase changes. Under experimental heating rates of 5, 10, 15, and 20 K/min, the mass gain and thermal effects of the samples were tested, and also for different oxygen concentrations of 9, 15, and 21 vol%. Changes in the microstructure of the samples were analysed. Oxide layer thickness was found to increase as temperature increased, and this trend was the same for mass change. Surface morphology images of the aluminium particles exhibited agglomeration, melting deformation, rupture, and fragmentation at the different pretreated temperatures of 500, 650, 800, and 900 °C. The results of this study could be used as a basis for exploring oxidation kinetics, and had significance for explosion-proofing technology, particularly with respect to aluminium nano-powder. © 2022 The Institution of Chemical Engineers
