In our fast-paced society, due to the interconnection of millions of devices on the Internet, a great amount of complex data is shared, received, and managed by facilitating communication among users and devices globally. As a result, users from different educational backgrounds and professions are exposed to cyber threats and risks. Current megatrends such as Industry 4.0, Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud Computing, Metaverse, and 6G technology introduce a new era of user experience through strong connectivity, and costless service with high adaptability, however, it raises major data privacy and security concerns. These trends can ameliorate people’s lives;however, they are characterized as "attractive vulnerable targets" for cyber-attacks with high intent to harm and disrupt people’s daily lives. This paper focuses on two main pillars: the privacy and security fundamental challenges of the synergy between the Internet of Things (IoT) and the Cloud which creates the Internet of Cloud (IoC) and the need of raising awareness to prevent violation of user’s data on the IoC. The scope of this paper is to indicate the importance of privacy and security concerns on IoC and to explain why privacy awareness training should be a priority. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Digital education technology has become an essential component of the educational process and has greatly impacted the learning experience in schools and higher education. Especially, in recent years, there has been a surge in the adoption of educational applications and the use of e-learning platforms resulting in a vast amount of educational data being generated. Using Learning Analytics and Educational Data Mining can assist in extracting valuable information from educational data, which can enhance the learning experience for both learners and educators. However, there is a growing need to address privacy concerns and ensure data security, and thus research focus has shifted to the development of privacy frameworks and principles to ensure data privacy and security. This paper highlights the significance of data protection and privacy regulations, such as GDPR, in utilizing data mining methods in educational environments aiming on establishing the foundations for the creation of a privacy-focused framework for data processing within the educational platform. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The growing interest in Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality technologies has led to the development of the concept of Mirror Worlds, the Metaverse, and the AR Cloud. Different companies are creating their own version of the Metaverse and Mirror Worlds serve as a foundation for these experiences. As these technologies continue to grow, there is a need for the design of a systematic way for designing and implementing applications in virtual spaces. The universal daily use of the Internet and social media raises the need of privacy awareness. Using innovative technologies for educational purposes seems to be the solution to this issue. More specifically, game-based learning effectively educates users in technological fields, while offering adequate learning opportunities for a wide range of target groups. Although there are several categories of educational games and tools, virtual reality games are efficient for training on privacy issues. The present study aims to validate the adding value virtual reality games can bring to in privacy awareness status quo. In more detail, the advantages of game-based learning using cut-edge technologies, such as virtual reality, are analyzed. In order to evaluate this theory, a virtual reality escape room was designed, implemented, and navigated by 13 users that provided important feedback regarding the effectiveness of game-based learning and virtual reality in privacy Awareness. © 2022 ACM.

Aiming at achieving cultural heritage digitization, 3D scanning, modelling and printing for cultural organizations are considered as innovative and effective practices for the restoration, presentation, and production of cultural goods, while offering a robust foundation for preserving the cultural heritage assets. Many approaches have been introduced in 3D area regarding intangible heritage, thus a lack of standards and proven methodologies has been indicated. In this regard, the AegeanDigital Tourism Tank research action intends to establish an expert-driven methodology for managing holistic and user-oriented 3D scanning, modelling and printing. The contribution of this holistic approach not only enhances the preservation of digital Heritage in the North Aegean, but also increases the scientific, economic and social impact of advanced services to the potential audiences of the cultural organizations of North Aegean. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.

Centralized social networks have experienced a transformative impact on our digital era communication, connection, and information-sharing information. However, it has also raised significant concerns regarding users’ privacy and individual rights. In response to these concerns, this paper proposes a novel Decentralized social Network employing Blockchain technology and Decentralized Storage Networks completed by Access Control Smart Contracts. The initial phase comprises a comprehensive literature review, delving into decentralized social networks, explaining the review methodology, and presenting the resulting findings. Building upon these findings and an analysis of previous research gaps, we propose a novel architecture for decentralized social networks. In conclusion, the principal results highlight the benefit of our decentralized social network to protect user privacy. Moreover, the users have all rights to their posted information following the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). © 2024, CC BY.

Millions of users all over the world nowadays spend many hours daily using social networks on a range of devices (desktop, tablet, mobile), in many languages and countries, under very different systems of governance, and in wide-ranging social, religious, cultural and political environments. But the same software (System Services, Operating Systems "OSes", Hypervisors, Applications and Utilities) is still called upon to function in contexts defined by these vast differences in terms of quality, reliability, efficiency and security. All domestic appliances, contemporary cars and almost everything powered by electricity is now equipped with at least a rudimentary interface and ready-to-run software. Electronic transactions are now routine and there is a huge need for online security and privacy. Bring your own device (BYOD) is a trend that is appearing even in SMBs (Small and Midsize Business) with aspects, policy considerations, security models and traps. The success off all the above depends on User eXperience where the user intersects with the product (software). In this paper, we analyse the different approaches taken under the concept of User eXperience (UX) in tandem with the development of contemporary software, and examine their ramifications for the level of security and privacy. We will show that UX is a different concept from usability, examine the different academic approaches and their underlying viewpoints, and show how the tasks in question relate to security. We believe that the interface between UX and security is a demanding area which requires research in multiple dimensions. The need for designing and developing contemporary software which is smart, user-friendly, adaptive, secure and capable of protecting every type of user is immense. © 2020, IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

Enhancing data subjects’ rights in order to increase control over personal data is doubtless GDPR’s priority. Though, the protection of personal data and human rights does not rely only on the legal framework, but also on data subjects’ knowledge regarding their right to data protection. This paper building upon a research having explored a group of Greek data subjects’ extent of knowledge about the rights GDPR guarantees which revealed that there is not sufficient knowledge for all the rights investigated, aims to explore factors that affect the extent of rights knowledge focusing on information sources and demographic variables. The results show that rights knowledge extent is not that much affected by respondents’ demographic characteristics, while on the contrary the sources of information on GDPR impact more. This generates the need for more awareness programs, national campaigns and educational interventions on GDPR targeted to the public, in order to prevent the emergence of a new form of inequality between data subjects as a result of rights’ knowledge gap. © 2020, IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

privacy protection within Cloud Computing Environments (CCE) is extremely complex to be realized, due to multiple stakeholders’ interactions that lead to several privacy risks and leaks. Therefore, the necessity for self-adaptive privacy preserving schemes, in order to safeguard users’ privacy by considering their social and technological context within CCE is highlighted. Our analysis has indicated that a group of criteria should be satisfied in order to support this aim. However, it is pointed out that the criteria concerning the identification of users’ social needs and stakeholders’ technical privacy needs are not sufficiently satisfied, failing to determine which stakeholders’ privacy aspects should be examined and how. Towards this, the paper points out that Self Adaptive privacy within CCE should be addressed as an emerged interdisciplinary research area, since the identified criteria concern both users’ social norms and technical privacy artifacts. Based on these criteria, the social and technical privacy aspects that should be considered from both users’ and developers’ perspective are discussed, leading to the identification of the socio-technical concepts and their interdependencies that should be taken into account. It proposes that a proper research design regarding Self Adaptive privacy within CCE should be built, based on an interrelated three-layered examination that concerns users’, developers’ and CCE context, aiming to lay the ground for the identification of the Self-Adaptive privacy related requirements within CCE. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Technological developments have led to tools for collecting personal data in a volume and form that in the past would have been difficult to gather. This creates new opportunities for public and private sector agencies to store and process personal data for a variety of purposes, while it also produces risks for data subjects regarding data protection and privacy. In this frame, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) focuses on enhancing data subjects’ rights in order to increase their control over personal data, establishing at the same time stricter obligations for data controllers and compliance monitoring procedures. This research explores a group of Greek data subjects’ knowledge about their rights and the rights-related behavior showing that, one year after the implementation of GDPR, they are not yet fully aware of all their rights and in some cases they do not know how to exercise these rights. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.
