Evaluation of the physical properties of local wheat husk ash and its effects on the compressive strength of hardened cement paste

The dehusking of wheat results in the significant annual production of wheat husk, an agricultural byproduct. This waste is often burned outdoors to generate energy, with the resulting ash (wheat husk ash, WHA) typically disposed of in landfills, leading to environmental harm. To mitigate the negative environmental impact, this research explores the potential of utilizing wheat husk ash to enhance the mechanical properties of cement paste. The study involved the partial replacement of Portland cement in the mixture with varying proportions of wheat husk ash (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30%) to produce WHA blended cement with sample with 0% as the control, and examined the compressive strength of hardened cement paste (HCP) at different curing ages (3, 7, 14, and 28 days). Chemical water tests revealed that the water-to-cement ratio required for standard HCP increased linearly with the proportion of WHA in the mix. Additionally, it was found that the bulk density of HCP decreased as the percentage of WHA increased. Compressive strength tests of the HCP samples yielded promising results, particularly with 15% (30.04) and 20% (28.73) WHA replacement. The compressive strength improved by approximately 14% with 15% WHA replacement and by 10% with 20% WHA replacement. In conclusion, the incorporation of wheat husk ash (WHA) at optimal percentages in cement mixtures enhances the compressive strength of hardened cement paste, particularly after full curing. This study highlights not only the mechanical improvements achieved through WHA integration but also its potential to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of cement production, demonstrating a dual advantage of improved material performance and environmental sustainability.

This paper addresses the persistence and security problem of nonlinear distributed heterogeneous platoons during driving based on the discrete-time control barrier function (DCBF). Introducing a set of DCBF constraints in nonlinear distributed model predictive control (NDMPC) encodes persistent and safe behaviors as forward invariance of sets in the vehicle state space, enabling it to constrain the workshop distance and their electricity during driving simultaneously. To address the uncertainty of waiting time for vehicles at charging stations, the Markov decision process is introduced to optimize the charging strategy on the basis of ensuring the persistence, thereby reducing the time for vehicles to return to the end of the queue under speed limit conditions. By combining a set of constructed DCBFs with Markov decision processes and incorporating them into NDMPC, the dynamic behavior of heterogeneous platoon driving processes can be optimized. The vehicle will make a decision after each visit to a charging station, which can not only ensure that the vehicle reaches a charging station with shorter waiting time in queues before running out of battery but also ensure that the spacing between any two successive vehicles in the platoon is not less than the expected safe distance. The proposed improved NDMPC-DBCBF algorithm can ensure the persistence of all vehicles in the heterogeneous platoon during driving, improve the safety of vehicle following, and effectively solve the challenges brought by the uncertainty of waiting time at charging stations. Finally, an experimental simulation validates the feasibility of the suggested control algorithm. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

Plastics, initially viewed as alternatives to metals and wood, have become indispensable due to their versatility and customizable properties. However, optimizing the injection molding process for high-performance applications remains a significant challenge, particularly in managing defects such as warping, shrinkage, and deformation. These issues arise from the complex interplay of material properties and process parameters, necessitating advanced modeling and simulation to address them effectively. This study examines the mold flow behavior of a high-performance circular panel mount connector, comparing polyphenylene oxide (PPO) and polybutylene terephthalate (PBT). By simulating both materials on the same model, we analyze their impact on fill patterns, shrinkage, warping, and deformation. The quantitative results indicate that PPO exhibits a lower maximum volumetric shrinkage (12%) compared to PBT (15%) in Moldex3D simulations, highlighting its superior dimensional stability and reduced risk of warpage. The proposed solution involves leveraging accurate Computer-Aided engineering (CAE) simulations to identify optimal material and process configurations. The main contributions of this work are threefold: first, a comparative analysis of PPO and PBT to determine their suitability for high-precision applications; second, the identification of key parameters influencing defect formation and strategies for their mitigation; and third, the demonstration of the critical role of simulation in enhancing material selection and process efficiency. The findings offer valuable insights into optimizing injection molding for industrial applications, underscoring the importance of simulation as a vital tool in advancing the quality and performance of polymer-based components.

This paper considers the distributed bandit convex optimization problem with time-varying inequality constraints over a network of agents, where the goal is to minimize network regret and cumulative constraint violation. Existing distributed online algorithms solving this problem require that each agent broadcasts its decision to its neighbors at each iteration. However, communication resources are often limited. To better utilize communication resources, we propose a distributed event-triggered online primal-dual algorithm with two-point bandit feedback. Under several classes of appropriately chosen decreasing parameter sequences and non-increasing event-triggered threshold sequences, we establish dynamic network regret and network cumulative constraint violation bounds. These bounds are comparable to the results achieved by distributed event-triggered online algorithms with full-information feedback. Finally, a numerical example is provided to verify the theoretical results. © 2014 IEEE.

This book reflects the considerable current industrial interest and investment in process control systems. The use of computer systems in process control can provide great benefits, and it is estimated that efficiency can be increased by up to 30%. It is not surprising, therefore, that there have been considerable efforts by system designers and users to introduce and use such systems. process hardware is integrated into a complete production system through data processing. It is for this purpose that technical specialists (e. g. electrical, mechanical, electronics, communication and process engineers and program mers) are involved in data processing. The scope of this book is therefore to assist in the selection of computer hardware and software that match the functional specification of the data processing component of a particular system. The principal points covered in this book are set out below. Part One: Production process hardware for a standard process is outlined and the information processing hardware is described. Large mechanical process hardware and process information devices (e. g. sensors and control elements involved in the process) create a coherent production unit, or system, which can be the control unit (i. e. the basic process unit). The hardware processes are described and the mathematics explained. This enables the application of control laws in order to linearize the process about its working point, as well as a stratification of process control tasks.

Improvements of particle filter optimization algorithm for robust optimization under different types of uncertainties

This paper introduces a methodology for handling different types of uncertainties during robust optimization. In real-world industrial optimization problems, many types of uncertainties emerge, e.g., inaccurate setting of control variables, and the parameters of the system model are usually not known precisely. For these reasons, the global optimum considering the nominal values of the parameters may not give the best performance in practice. This paper presents a widely usable sampling-based methodology by improving the Particle Filter Optimization (PFO) algorithm. Case studies on benchmark functions and even on a practical example of a styrene reactor are introduced to verify the applicability of the proposed method on finding robust optimum, and show how the users can tune this algorithm according to their requirement. The results verify that the proposed method is able to find robust optimums efficiently under parameter and decision variable uncertainties, as well. © 2025 The Author(s)

Automated process development with pure API filling using vacuum drum

In pharmaceutical development, dosing of pure active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) has proven to be essential for reducing API consumption and shortening early-stage development time, avoiding the need for excipients and compatibility studies. The vacuum drum filler, known for its precision in dosing down to 1 mg, is commonly employed for micro-dosing purposes, e.g., in the field of dry powder inhalation (DPI). In this study, however, it is desired to investigate the vacuum drum filler for its suitability in pure API filling. Automated process Development (APD) integrates design of experiments (DoE) with automated execution to optimize processes efficiently. In this study, the APD method was investigated on the vacuum drum filling system to analyse the impact of various process parameters on the filling weight of capsules and the relative standard deviation (RSD) between the bores considering pure API. For this, two APIs were investigated: powdered paracetamol and micronized paracetamol. Notably, despite variations in vacuum and pressure, process parameters related to powder preparation in the chamber exerted the most significant influence. The 3-wire stirrer, located in the chamber on top of the vacuum drum, resulted in better filling weights and lower RSD with both powders. The APD method allowed to identify the parameters that minimized the RSD in the capsule filling of pure powdered paracetamol, emphasizing the need for tailored parameter optimization. Further investigation is needed to determine how to achieve optimal powder preparation in the chamber for micronized paracetamol. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

The Need for Smart Shop Floor Management in the Automotive Industry: Potentials, Challenges and Requirements

Industry 4.0 and the accompanying digital transformation of the modern-day factory have led to various advances in manufacturing. Shop floor management (SFM) – a core instrument of production management – has to align with these digital advances as well. However, due to SFM’s strong human-centric roots and manufacturers predominantly conducting SFM through analog means, it raises the question of what sort of digital support should be used for SFM and what specifications should be included in digital SFM systems. This study, consisting of a case study comprising semi-structured interviews and on-site inspections at a large original equipment manufacturer (OEM), provides concrete requirements for digitally-supported SFM derived from practice. We investigated which elements from analog SFM should be retained and where possible improvements through digital support exist. Moreover, we identified definitive improvement potentials such as the aggregation of data sources, as well as the preparation, performance, and documentation of shop floor meetings without disruptions in information flows. We conclude that digital transformation in the SFM context neither implies the mere introduction of software to solve specific problems, nor the full automation of SFM processes through digital solutions (what we call “digital” SFM). Rather, we highlight the importance of “smart SFM”: the adoption of sociotechnical systems in which SFM’s traditional social characteristics are maintained but are simultaneously sensibly augmented with digital solutions to improve SFM processes.

A 1-dodecanethiol-based phase transfer protocol for the highly efficient extraction of noble metal ions from aqueous phase

A 1-dodecanethiol-based phase-transfer protocol is developed for the extraction of noble metal ions from aqueous solution to a hydrocarbon phase, which calls for first mixing the aqueous metal ion solution with an ethanolic solution of 1-dodecanethiol, and then extracting the coordination compounds formed between noble metal ions and 1-dodecanethiol into a non-polar organic solvent. A number of characterization techniques, including inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis demonstrate that this protocol could be applied to extract a wide variety of noble metal ions from water to dichlorometh- ane with an efficiency of 〉96%, and has high selectivity for the separation of the noble metal ions from other transition metals. It is therefore an attractive alternative for the extraction of noble metals from water, soil, or waste printed circuit boards.
