In agile Cyber-physical Production System (CPPS) engineering, multi-disciplinary teams work concurrently and iteratively on various CPPS engineering artifacts, based on engineering models and Product-process-Resource (PPR) knowledge, to design and build a production system. However, in such settings it is difficult to keep track of (i) the effects of changes across engineering disciplines, and (ii) their implications on risks to engineering quality, represented in Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA). To tackle these challenges and systematically co-evolve FMEA and PPR models, requires propagating and validating changes across engineering and FMEA artifacts. To this end, we design and evaluate a Multi-view FMEA+PPR (MvFMEA+PPR) meta-model to represent relationships between FMEA elements and CPPS engineering assets and trace their change states and dependencies in the design and validation lifecycle. We evaluate the MvFMEA+PPR meta-model in a feasibility study on the quality of a screwing process from automotive production. The study results indicate the MvFMEA+PPR meta-model to be more effective than alternative traditional approaches. © 2022 IEEE.

We introduce an alternative approach towards optimal proportional integral derivative (PID) control, consisting of model predictive control (MPC) based reference generation. To this end, we have integrated the reference as part of optimization variables of the resulting problem, where a deliberate sequence of errors is induced to obtain an optimal PID control action. In addition, the desired behavior of the PID controller is achieved without the need for internal modification of the PID gains. To better highlight the ability of coping with poor PID tuning, several test cases consisting of progressively degraded PID gains are presented. Validation of the proposed strategy is displayed by comprehensive simulations using two different plants.

Energy management system (EMS) is important for the planning and operation of power system as the power generation must supply enough energy for load with the minimum operating cost. This paper presents nonlinear MPC to dispatch power generation within the limitation of the power system. The objectives are to improve EMS by considering AC optimal power flow and provide a dispatch strategy to reduce total operating cost (TOC). To realize the proposed nonlinear MPC, we consider the power plant model of Mae Hong Son in the northern part of Thailand. Load data and power generation profile are utilized as the inputs to MPC of EMS to minimize TOC for one day ahead. In this work, the optimal power flow is incorporated as the second order cone constraints. It is shown that EMS with optimal power flow can operate within the rated voltage for all buses. When comparing the results in normal mode with one-shot optimization, the proposed MPC can reduce the TOC by 1.72% in the rainy season. © 2021 IEEE.

Meniscus injury is one of the most common sports injuries within the knee joint,which is also a crucial pathogenic factor for osteoarthritis(OA).The current meniscus substitution products are far from able to restore meniscal biofunctions due to the inability to reconstruct the gradient heterogeneity of natural meniscus from biological and biomechanical ***,inspired by the topology self-induced effect and native meniscus microstructure,we present an innovative tissue-engineered meniscus(TEM)with a unique gradient-sized diamond-pored microstructure(GSDP-TEM)through dual-stage temperature control 3D-printing system based on the mechanical/biocompatibility compatible high M_(w) poly(ε-caprolactone)(PCL).Biologically,the unique gradient microtopology allows the seeded mesenchymal stem cells with spatially heterogeneous differentiation,triggering gradient transition of the extracellular matrix(ECM)from the inside ***,GSDP-TEM presents excellent circumferential tensile modulus and load transmission ability similar to the natural *** implantation in rabbit knee,GSDP-TEM induces the regeneration of biomimetic heterogeneous neomeniscus and efficiently alleviates joint *** study provides an innovative strategy for functional meniscus *** self-induced cell differentiation and biomechanical property also provides a simple and effective solution for other complex heterogeneous structure reconstructions in the human body and possesses high clinical translational potential.

An accurate estimation of the state of charge (SoC) of lithium titanate (LTO) batteries is required for their effective operation and management. In this study, we propose an unscented Kalman filter (UKF) approach for estimating the SoC of LTO batteries, which are challenging to assess due to the nonlinear voltage-SoC relationship and aging impact. Our approach uses a state and measurement model based on LTO’s electrochemical characteristics and employs sigma points and weights to address nonlinearities. According to the findings of our research, the UKF-based methodology has high accuracy, rapid convergence, and resilience to discharge rate, outperforming or matching the capabilities of existing state-of-the-art approaches. This work provides a novel and effective solution for LTO battery SoC estimation, useful for applications in electric vehicles, energy storage, and smart grid energy systems.

In this study, operational strategies are investigated for an air-based photovoltaic-thermal (PV-T) system integrated with a domestic air-to-water heat pump. The PV-T system is used to simultaneously generate electricity and heat ambient air, which serves as the heat source for the heat pump. By utilising a variable-speed fan to regulate airflow, the PV-T system outlet temperature is adjusted, and the focus is on how different outlet temperatures impact the PVT system electrical and thermal efficiency, heat pump performance, and overall electricity requirements for heating. The performance of the integrated system is assessed for a case study of a household application in north Italy. The optimal PV-T outlet temperature is found to be between 30 - 35 °C, resulting in only 5% less electricity production than an equivalent PV system with equal nominal electricity capacity, while reducing overall electricity required for heating by over 15% compared to PV-integrated heat pumps. © 2024 IEEE.

With inspiration from natural systems, various soft actuators and robots have been explored in recent years with versatile applications in biomedical and engineering fields. Soft active materials with rich stimulus-responsive characteristics have been an ideal candidate to devise these soft machines by using different manufacturing technologies. Among these technologies, three-dimensional (3D) printing shows advantages in fabricating constructs with multiple materials and sophisticated architectures. In this Review, we aim to provide an overview of recent progress on 3D printing of soft materials, robotics performances, and representative applications. Typical 3D printing techniques are briefly introduced, followed by state-of-the-art advances in 3D printing of hydrogels, shape memory polymers, liquid crystalline elastomers, and their hybrids as soft actuators and robots. From the perspective of material properties, the commonly used printing techniques and action-generation principles for typical printed constructs are discussed. Actuation performances, locomotive behaviors, and representative applications of printed soft materials are summarized. The relationship between printing structures and action performances of soft actuators and robots is also briefly discussed. Finally, the advantages and limitations of each soft material are compared, and the remaining challenges and future directions in this field are prospected. © 2024 The Authors. In interior ballistic simulations, the burn time can be affected by the burn rate, propellant dimensions and flame spread. Standard IB models assume that grains are symmetric with no variation in dimensions, with instantaneous homogeneous ignition. This paper evaluates the contribution of grain dimensional variation (specifically the web), asymmetry and flame spread in a single base propellant with a single perforated grain geometry. It is shown that flame spread has the dominant effect on burn time, followed by web dimensional variation and lastly asymmetry. The implementation of these effects also leads to a simulated result that is more representative of the experimental curve in the closed vessel especially in the burnout phase. © Proceedings - 32nd International Symposium on Ballistics, BALLISTICS 2022. Direct synthesis of H_(2)O_(2)from H_(2) and O_(2)via heterogeneous catalysis is an environmentally friendly and atomically economic alternative to the traditional anthraquinone oxidation(AO)*** the electronic and geometric structures of the active metals to break the current limitations of hydrogenation rate and H_(2)O_(2)selectivity is a promising and challenging *** this study,a series of Pd-Au bimetallic catalysts supported on TiO_(2)with a metal loading of 3.0 wt%and a constant Pd/Au molar ratio(Pd:Au=2:1)were *** catalysts were reduced in H_(2) at different temperatures(473,573 and 673 K),and their catalytic activity for the direct H_(2)O_(2)synthesis were evaluated at 283 K and 0.1MPa.H_(2) reduced Pd-Au catalysts exhibited superior performance in direct H_(2)O_(2)*** maximum H_(2)O_(2)selectivity of 87.7%and H_(2)O_(2)yield of 3116.4 mmol h^(−1) gPd^(−1) were achieved over the Pd_(2.0)Au_(1.0)-573 catalyst with a H_(2) conversion of 12.8%.The tailored local chemical environment caused by H_(2) reduction creates a balanced ratio of Pd0 and PdO_(x) sites,thus improving the selectivity towards H_(2)O_(2).This work developed an effective strategy for fabrication of highly active and stable Pd-based H_(2)O_(2)synthesis catalysts with high H_(2)O_(2)yield.
