The home will become the most important link between heat, electricity and mobility. For instance, the concept of Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) allows to use the average long parking times of electric vehicles for energy management applications in the household. In this study, we focus on developing a simulation model in the Home Energy Management System (HEMS) to explore the impact of bi-directional charging on household energy supply. Different scenarios of bi-directional charging could be simulated. For example, the degree of self-sufficiency of bi-directional systems could be increased by more than 10% compared to unidirectional *** results of the simulations show that bi-directional charging has the potential to increase the home self-sufficiency of photovoltaics energy and indirectly to reduce the load from the energy grid. It is important to say that the potential strongly depends on individual user behaviour, the possible charging technology and the presence of the vehicle on site. © 2023, The Authors. Filamentous fungal applications in biotechnology: a combined bibliometric and patentometric assessment

Background: processes and products employing filamentous fungi are increasing contributors to biotechnology. These organisms are used as cell factories for the synthesis of platform chemicals, enzymes, acids, foodstuffs and therapeutics. More recent applications include processing biomass into construction or textile materials. These exciting advances raise several interrelated questions regarding the contributions of filamentous fungi to biotechnology. For example, are advances in this discipline a major contributor compared to other organisms, e.g. plants or bacteria? From a geographical perspective, where is this work conducted? Which species are predominantly used? How do biotech companies actually use these organisms? Results: To glean a snapshot of the state of the discipline, literature (bibliometry) and patent (patentometry) outputs of filamentous fungal applications and the related fields were quantitatively surveyed. How these outputs vary across fungal species, industrial application(s), geographical locations and biotechnological companies were analysed. Results identified (i) fungi as crucial drivers for publications and patents in biotechnology, (ii) enzyme and organic acid production as the main applications, (iii) Aspergillus as the most commonly used genus by biotechnologists, (iv) China, the United States, Brazil, and Europe as the leaders in filamentous fungal science, and (v) the key players in industrial biotechnology. Conclusions: This study generated a summary of the status of filamentous fungal applications in biotechnology. Both bibliometric and patentometric data have identified several key trends, breakthroughs and challenges faced by the fungal research community. The analysis suggests that the future is bright for filamentous fungal research worldwide. © 2021, The Author(s).

Chemical Recycling of Plastic Waste: Comparative Evaluation of Environmental and Economic Performances of Gasification- and Incineration-based Treatment for Lightweight Packaging Waste

Chemical recycling (CR) – in enabling the use of plastic waste back as secondary carbon feedstock for production – could play a complementary role to mechanical recycling in supporting the transformation from a linear to a circular carbon economy. To date, research has predominantly focused on assessing technological aspects associated with CR of pure plastic waste streams. Little is known about its potential for treating low-quality and mixed plastic waste fractions which are unsuitable for conventional recycling and are currently incinerated. To address this gap, this investigation utilizes an integrated approach comprising of life cycle assessment and techno-economic analysis to evaluate the environmental and economic performance of CR of lightweight packaging waste via waste gasification compared to direct and indirect incineration in Germany. Results show that CR can contribute significantly – irrespective of the energy mix – to reducing climate change, terrestrial acidification, and fossil resource scarcity. In terms of economic performance, findings suggest that while CR requires higher capital investment, a multi-pronged approach which encompasses upscaling, waiver of carbon dioxide certificate costs, and price premium for CR products could increase profitability of CR to incineration. This study provides empirical support for the potential contribution of CR to complement existing strategies to combat the plastic waste challenge, and insights into market conditions which could promote its economic attractiveness. Additionally, it provides comprehensive inventory data for conventional and alternative waste treatment plants for lightweight packaging waste to inform future research on systemic assessment of CR technologies and their contributions to a circular economy. © 2022, The Author(s).

Hydrothermal pretreatment of protein-rich substrate:Modified physicochemical properties and consequent responses in its anaerobic digestion

Wasted tofu rich in protein was subject to hydrothermal pretreatment(HTPT)under different conditions(at 120,140,160 and 180℃;for 0,30,60 and 90 min)followed by biochemical methane potential(BMP)tests,and 140℃and 0 min were found to be respectively the best temperature and duration for HTPT of tofu in terms of its biogas *** the under the optimal conditions(140℃,0 min)the accumulative methane yield reached up to 510.9 mL⋅(gVS)-1,which was 26.98%higher than that without HTPT(402.3 mL⋅(gVS)-1).The start-up process of continuous anerobic digestion(AD)of the tofu before and after hydrothermal treated(HT)at the optimal HTPT conditions(140℃,0 min)was examined,to investigate and compare how their consequent AD responded to *** was found that,for start-up of continuous AD,the HT tofu delivered more balanced nutrients and thus led to more stable AD and quicker biogas ***,HTPT generated products refractory to biodegradation,to slightly decrease the total biogas *** AD of HT tofu some weak ammonia-tolerant microbes,such as methylotrophic methanogens,survived and played indispensable *** of living microbial community structure indicated that,some hydrolytic acidification bacteria intolerant to ammonia nitrogen(such as Proteobacteria)were always active and appeared at high *** viable methylotrophic methanogens,*** M2,took obvious responsibilities in start-up of the AD for HT tofu.

In this paper, the leader selection problem is studied for impulsive general linear multi-agent systems under switching topologies, which minimizes the number of leaders subject to the consensus tracking performance. First, a consensus criterion for the studied multi-agent systems is derived. Second, leader selection metrics are established via the submodular optimization technique according to the proposed criterion. Third, a leader selection scheme is presented, with a polynomial-time algorithm that returns candidate leader sets. Finally, the effectiveness of the developed leader selection scheme is verified by numerical examples. © 2023 IEEE.

Giant tunneling magnetoresistance in insulated altermagnet/ferromagnet junctions induced by spin-dependent tunneling effect

The nondegenerate energy bands along a specific path of altermagnet enable the realization of magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) with high tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR). Herein, we propose a MTJ based on insulated altermagnet/ferromagnetic MTJ−MnF2/CrO2. In addition to effectively simplifying the device configuration, high TMR is attained in the [110] and [111] crystal directions due to the spin-dependent tunneling effect in the real space of MnF2. The increase in the thickness of the MnF2 layer leads to an increase in electron spin filtering efficiency (SFE). When the thickness of the MnF2 layer is three layers, the SFE is as high as 85.65% and the TMR is as high as 104%. In addition, we find that the interface type has a significant impact on the magnetoresistance performance of the tunnel junction. Compared with F interface, the O interface leads to a further increase in the SFE of MnF2 (99.56%) and conductance of MTJ, and thus a significant enhancement of the TMR (up to 105%). The analysis of electronic states in real space reveals that the coordination of oxygen atoms with magnetic atoms in the current direction gives rise to the endowed electronic states and an increase in spin polarizability in the vicinity. The results provide insight into the development of ultrafast and efficient spintronic devices with altermagnet.

Developing efficient and stable zeolites for vapor-phase Beckmann rearrangement of cyclohexanone oxime is still a great challenge to realizeε-caprolactam(CPL)green *** this work,the hierarchical porous silicalite-1 zeolites with multiple hollow structure(S-1-M)are explored by in-situ desilication−recrystallization post-treatment of spongy highway-like zeolites(S-1-S),which are synthesized through silanization synthesis of conventional bulky silicalite-1(S-1).Compared to S-1,S-1-M achieves superior catalytic performance,with improving the CPL selectivity from 85.7%to 94.1%and prolonging the catalyst lifetime from 74 to 126 h at a weight hourly space velocity(WHSV)of 6 h^(−1).Comprehensive physiochemical studies demonstrate that the highly dispersed intracrystalline cavities within S-1-M endow greater mass diffusion and better quasi acidity inducing by the enhanced H-bonds among abundant H-bonded silanols,which is cooperatively responsible for its superior catalytic performance.

Digital transformation utilizing the digital twin of a process can provide enormous benefit. It is possible to effectively monitor the process operation and control the process erroneous behavior by using the high-fidelity digital twin. In addition, the better operational strategy can be identified through process optimization from the digital twin. To perform such activities about the huge scale of process, we established a digital platform that allows the operational personnel to efficiently monitor the operation condition with the useful information such as economics and representative indexes that can be obtained from the digital twin. A chemical plant utility system that has a goal to supply the process utilities such as steam and power stably was used as the target process. As exclusive features of the project for the utility system the platform suggests the multi-level optimization results in terms of the process specifications as well as the trends of the key performance indicators of the process. It also provides a tool, what-if analysis, to simulate the hypothetical situation in preparation for the possible change of the external factors. Using the digital process twin technology, we were able to suggest the capability to save the cost and present the high-level information that cannot be utilized from the process data alone. © 2021 ICROS.

Safety critical systems are typically subjected to hazard analysis before commissioning to identify and analyse potentially hazardous system states that may arise during operation. Currently, hazard analysis is mainly based on human reasoning, past experiences, and simple tools such as checklists and spreadsheets. Increasing system complexity makes such approaches decreasingly suitable. Furthermore, testing-based hazard analysis is often not suitable due to high costs or dangers of physical faults. A remedy for this are model-based hazard analysis methods, which either rely on formal models or on simulation models, each with their own benefits and drawbacks. This paper proposes a two-layer approach that combines the benefits of exhaustive analysis using formal methods with detailed analysis using simulation. Unsafe behaviours that lead to unsafe states are first synthesised from a formal model of the system using Supervisory control Theory. The result is then input to the simulation where detailed analyses using domain-specific risk metrics are performed. Though the presented approach is generally applicable, this paper demonstrates the benefits of the approach on an industrial human-robot collaboration system.

Data quality issues can lead to significant financial losses, which necessitates the use of data profiling to monitor the statistical properties of datasets and detect harmful deviations early. However, many existing data profiling solutions cannot perform multi-column feature analysis. On the other hand, machine learning algorithms, particularly decision trees, are effective at discovering non-linear and multivariate patterns within tabular data. In this study, we propose a framework that combines the interpretable pattern-mining capabilities of decision trees with time series forecasting to identify significant changes in data. We evaluate our framework on a real-world dataset from a leading telecommunications provider in Germany, which includes a known anomaly resulting from a faulty database entry. Our results indicate that our framework successfully detects data changes and provides interpretable descriptions for each anomaly, highlighting its relevancy for practitioners.
