This paper presents a novel algorithm integrating global and robust optimisation methods to solve continuous non-convex quadratic problems under convex uncertainty sets. The proposed Robust spatial branch-and-bound (RsBB) algorithm combines the principles of spatial branch-and-bound (sBB) with robust cutting planes. We apply the RsBB algorithm to quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP) pooling problems, utilising McCormick envelopes to obtain convex lower bounds. The performance of the RsBB algorithm is compared with state-of-the-art methods that rely on global solvers. As computational test bed for our proposed approach we focus on pooling problems under different types and sizes of uncertainty sets. The findings of our work highlight the efficiency of the RsBB algorithm in terms of computational time and optimality convergence and provide insights to the advantages of combining robustness and optimality search. © 2025, CC BY.

The slow conversion of polyphase in lithium-sulfur(Li-S)batteries not only intensifies the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides(LiPSs),but also causes the continuous accumulation of inactive sulfur species,resulting in rapid capacity attenuation and sluggish dynamic ***,the promoting effect of atomic interface stress on sulfur reaction was investigated via CoFe-CoFe_(2)O_(4)heterogeneous nanosheets with a cavity *** strain force induced by the in-situ precipitation of Co Fe bimetallic alloy in oxide matrix increased the d-band center,which was conducive to the interaction between catalyst and Li *** sulfur cathode based on this two-dimensional(2D)nanosheet design showed an extremely high capacity of 751 mAh g^(-1)at 4 *** with a sulfur loading of 5.55 mg cm^(-2),its area capacity was still as high as 7.15 mAh cm^(-2).Meanwhile,the enhanced stability greatly improved the practical potential of Li-S batteries.

Sequence-programmable DNA building blocks offer high degree of freedom in designing arbitrarily complex networks of tunable viscoelastic properties. Yet, the deployment of DNA-based functional materials remains limited due to insufficient control over the emerging structures and their mechanics. In an ongoing effort to place structure-property relations in stimuli-responsive DNA materials on a firm foundation, here a systematic rheological study of self-assembling DNA networks is presented, comprised of short DNA nanomotifs, namely trivalent nanostars and bivalent linkers, where the latter differ in their composition on a single base-pair level. Notably, we found through combining conventional bulk rheology with diffusing wave spectroscopy (DWS-based) passive microrheology a relationship between the melting temperature of a DNA hydrogel and its DNA sequence composition. By providing a use case, we demonstrated how the determination of such empirical relations could impact the areas of biosensing and mechanical computing, where control over the system state and target identification are key. © 2025 The Author(s). Sustainability and green environment concepts have evolved in various fields, including but not limited to industry, energy, transport, and construction. Several applications and technologies are integrated into pavement in order to enhance the sustainability of transport infrastructure. Thus, this paper aims to provide an in-depth review to examine the feasibility and benefits of embedding several renewable energy technologies, such as piezoelectric, photovoltaic, thermoelectric, and kinetic energy harvesting systems, into pavement materials. The paper also addresses the environmental impacts of integrating renewable energy into pavement materials and structures. The findings suggest that despite challenges such as high costs and efficiency optimization needs, the integration of renewable energy into transport infrastructure can significantly contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable development. Finally, future advancements in renewable energy-integrated pavement systems could transform sustainable infrastructure by enabling roads to generate power. Techniques such as piezoelectric materials, photovoltaic pavements, thermoelectric materials, and geothermal energy harvesting, alongside carbon-neutral materials with carbon capture, offer innovative ways to reduce the carbon footprint of roadways and provide alternative energy sources. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Steel-carbon-fibre–reinforced thermoplastic hybrid structures are widely used in engineering. Their performances are highly constrained by interface strength. This paper applies the laser-assisted in situ consolidation process to achieve the direct additive manufacturing of steel-carbon fibre reinforced polyetheretherketone (CF/PEEK) hybrid structure, with upgraded interface bonding strength. PEEK film is introduced, as an interlayer, to improve the bonding strength between the steel and CF/PEEK prepreg tape. The influence of surface texture, PEEK film thickness, cooling condition, laser power, and placement rate on the interface bonding strength between the steel and CF/PEEK is investigated and discussed. Based on optimal parameters, the maximum lap shear strength of 14.9 MPa is achieved. In addition, the crystallinities of PEEK films are measured to interpret the failure mode. The pyrolysis kinetics model of CF/PEEK prepreg tape is established to investigate the influence of the process parameters during the laser-assisted in situ consolidation process. Finally, a steel-CF/PEEK hybrid shaft with high interface bonding performance is fabricated through the proposed method, which shows overwhelming potential for the steel-carbon-fibre–reinforced thermoplastic composite (CFRTP) hybrid structure manufacture. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.

A methodological procedure for the energy transition in the land transport sector by quantifying renewable energy needs

A significant increase in the electricity demand from the transport sector is expected in the coming years given the decarbonisation targets set by most countries. With a view to guaranteeing a sustainable transition, in this study a novel methodology with a cross-sectoral (transport and renewable energies) coordination is proposed to determine the renewable power required to meet the needs of the transport sector. Two scenarios are defined: a Trend Scenario and an Implemented Policy Scenario in which the regional targets in these areas must be achieved. The Implemented Policy Scenario entails a modal shift from private vehicle to other transport modes, such as collective or active. The methodology is applied to Tenerife Island (Canary Archipelago, Spain) where the Spanish government target of 28 % electrification of land transport is assumed. On the basis of a 2030 time horizon, the variation in the total number of vehicles ranges from a 19 % increase (Trend Scenario) to a 0.5 % reduction (Implemented Policy Scenario). The Trend Scenario results in a 2.5 % increase in the electricity demand compared to 2020, while the Implemented Policy Scenario would require a 19 % increase. This would mean an additional installed renewable capacity in Tenerife of 41 MW and 322 MW, respectively. Reaching the goals in this region would entail a reduction of around 430 kton CO 2-eq . The proposed methodology enables identification of key socioeconomic parameters, including vehicle purchase acquisition, vehicle annual operational costs, gross domestic product and population, as well as their impact on the land transport transition.

The concepts of resilience and sustainability have recently gained significant attention from industrial and academic institutions. The resilience concept in the water and energy sectors indicates the ability to recover from disruptions such as natural disasters, whereas the sustainable concept ensures that current needs are met without compromising future generations. In Jordan, the water and energy sectors face numerous challenges, including scarce natural resources combined with the growth in climate-related disasters, regional instability, conflicts, urbanization, continuing difficulties in water and energy resources, and consumer awareness of sources’ conservation and sustainability. To address these pressing issues, the authors conducted in-depth interviews with 33 experts from government, international organizations, private companies, and donor agencies. These discussions explored the current state of the water and energy sectors, highlighting key challenges, the critical need to integrate resilience and sustainability, and potential future directions. The study’s findings emphasize the importance of coordinated strategic planning, along with specific recommendations such as upgrading water pumps, installing smart meters, and implementing time-based tariffs to promote responsible consumption. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Promoting transformation of energy structure while preventing industry chain supply chain risks has become an important issue facing coal industry chain supply chain (CICSC) under “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality”. This study is based on evolutionary game model to investigate the risk prevention and regulatory issues involving chain master enterprises, other enterprises, and government regulators. Research results indicate that: (1) System evolution of risk prevention and control of CICSC is not constant convergence in theoretical optimal strategy combination, there is a systematic bias in behavioral decision-making. (2) Reference effect, risk preferences and other subjective preferences heterogeneity affects value judgment of decision makers. The effect of cost reference is greater than that of utility reference, maintaining risk avoidance in cost problems and risk pursuit in revenue problems can help to improve the quality of individual decision-making. (3) There is a non-linear effect of fairness preference on risk prevention and control of CICSC, it makes fairness preference have the positive impact to risk prevention and control when intensity of fairness preference is in moderate range and types of fairness preference are arranged and combined in a scientific order, otherwise, fairness preference will become a kind of behavior that is “detrimental to others and not beneficial to oneself”. We propose new insights for risk prevention and control from the aspects of achievement transformation and guarantee mechanisms, building reward and punishment mechanisms and so on, call for further analysis of risk prevention and control according to specific risks in each link of CICSC in future research. © 2025 The Author(s)

Impact of tool wear and fiber orientation on CFRP surface integrity: an experimental study with pre-wear PCD tools

The machining of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) presents substantial challenges in preserving surface integrity due to the material's pronounced anisotropy, high stiffness, and low thermal conductivity. These characteristics lead to significant tool wear, considerable thermal damage, and pronounced surface defects during the machining process. To assess the machining performance of Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD) tools under different wear conditions and fiber orientations, this article introduces an experimental study on the milling of T700 / epoxy CFRP components using pre-wear PCD tools. The CFRP workpieces were specially designed in a gear shape to minimize tool wear progression and facilitate subsequent measurements. The results, observed using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), indicated variations in surface integrity related to tool wear progression. At zero Fiber Cutting Angles (FCAs), worn tool causes severer matrix peel up from the fiber. At acute FCAs, slightly worn tools produced a better surface finish than fresh tools due to matrix smearing, whereas severely worn tools resulted in chip adhesion and degraded surface quality. Down milling achieved greater surface integrity than up milling. Additionally, surface integrity was found more critical at low feed rates with severely worn tool. At obtuse FCAs, surface integrity was highly dependent on the feeding orientation, and was sensitive to tool wear. Up milling produced saw-tooth surface cavities at 150°FCA, while down milling showed significant cracks at 120° and 150°FCAs. The cutting force was more sensitive to tool wear progression at 30°, 60° and 90°FCAs, and less sensitive at 120° and 150°FCAs. Additionally, cutting forces were higher in up milling than in down milling, especially as tool wear progressed. These findings provide valuable insights for further research on optimizing CFRP machining processes to reduce tool wear and enhance component quality.

Numerical study on the behaviour and distribution of sinter during charging of a blast furnace with Bell-Less top

In blast furnaces, the burden distribution directly impacts gas flow, productivity, and energy consumption. A thorough understanding of particle behaviour during the charging process is essential for accurate design of the charging system and for control of the burden distribution, but current research on the behaviour of the particles in the whole charging system has been limited. In this study, a scaled-down model of a bell-less blast furnace charging system was simulated using the Discrete Element Method. The charging process of sinter particles with a ternary particle size distribution was simulated, eventually forming a sinter layer on the burden surface onto a pre-distributed coke layer. The behaviour of sinter particles through the charging system was analysed both temporally and spatially. The results revealed distinct particle behaviour characteristics for different-sized particles, including particle size, velocity distribution, in the different components of the charging system. The burden distribution in the throat was assessed both radially and axially, revealing that the spatial and temporal characteristics of particle flow influenced the burden distribution. The upper and lower surfaces of the sinter layer show pronounced particle segregation. The study provides a comprehensive analysis of the charging process from the top hopper to the burden surface, highlighting the significant impact of spatial and temporal particle behaviour on the burden distribution in bell-less blast furnaces. © 2025
