In this paper,the authors tackle a fixed-time average-tracking problem for multi-agent systems which do not require velocity measurements and are affected by external mismatched and matched *** objective requires the considered agents with second-order dynamics to follow the average value of several time-varying reference signals,each of which is acquired by only one *** of all,the average value is estimated by using a novel distributed average estimator in a fixed ***,an original observer is created to provide estimated values in a fixed time for external mismatched and matched disturbances as well as unmeasured velocities of ***,the authors propose a novel fixed-time anti-disturbance average-tracking protocol with the aid of the observer and a sliding mode *** the end,the feasibility of theoretical analysis is illustrated by some simulation experiments.

Industrial controllers constitute the core of numerous automation solutions. Continuous control system operation is crucial in certain sectors, where hardware duplication serves as a strategy to mitigate the risk of unexpected operational halts due to hardware failures. Standby controller redundancy is a commonly adopted strategy for process automation. This approach involves an active primary controller managing the process while a passive backup is on standby, ready to resume control should the primary fail. Typically, redundant controllers are paired with redundant networks and devices to eliminate any single points of failure. The process automation domain is on the brink of a paradigm shift towards greater interconnectivity and interoperability. OPC UA is emerging as the standard that will facilitate this shift, with OPC UA PubSub as the communication standard for cyclic real-time data exchange. Our work investigates standby redundancy using OPC UA PubSub, analyzing a system with redundant controllers and devices in publisher-subscriber roles. The analysis reveals that failovers are not subscriber-transparent without synchronized publisher states. We discuss solutions and experimentally validate an internal stack state synchronization alternative. © 2024 IEEE.

Multi-step state-based opacity for unambiguous weighted machines

Opacity is a central concept in the issue of privacy security and has been studied extensively in fields such as finite automata, probabilistic automata, and stochastic automata. Here, we investigate the problem of validating multi-step opaque properties through unambiguous weighted machines from the perspective of cyber-physical systems. First, the notion of multi-step state-based opacity for unambiguous weighted machines is presented and defined. It includes two variants of delays with a finite K and infinite steps. Subsequently, the weighted state estimate with K(infinite)-step delay is established by abstracting the possible state set that the system could have through these weighted observations. Meanwhile, to keep the observable weighted sequence consistent between the bidirectional observers, the unobserved weights of the reverse weighted machine are assumed to be reserved. Subsequently, the existence conditions are developed, and the corresponding algorithms, termed the weighted bidirectional observer, are generalized to verify these properties. Finally, several numerical examples are illustrated to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Taken together, the current approach will be conducive to a deep understanding of the security and privacy of cyber-physical systems.

Distributed control systems are part of the often invisible backbone of modern society that provides utility services like water and electricity. Their uninterrupted operation is vital, and unplanned stops due to failure can be expensive. Critical devices, like controllers, are often duplicated to minimize the service stop probability, with a secondary controller acting as a backup to the primary. A seamless takeover requires that the backup has the primary's latest state, i.e., the primary has to replicate its state to the backup. While this method ensures high availability, it can be costly due to hardware doubling. This work proposes a state replication solution that doesn't require the backup to store the primary state, separating state storage from the backup function. Our replication approach allows for more flexible controller redundancy deployments since one controller can be a backup for multiple primaries without being saturated by state replication data. Our main contribution is the partible state replication approach, realized with a distributed architecture utilizing a consensus algorithm. A partial connectivity-tolerant consensus algorithm is also an additional contribution. © 2024 IEEE.

A Fusion Kalman Filter and UFIR Estimator Using the Influence Function Method

In this paper,the Kalman filter(KF)and the unbiased finite impulse response(UFIR)filter are fused in the discrete-time state-space to improve robustness against *** avoid the problem where fusion filters may give up some advantages of UFIR filters by fusing based on noise statistics,we attempt to find a way to fuse without using noise *** fusion filtering algorithm is derived using the influence function that provides a quantified measure for disturbances on the resulting filtering outputs and is termed as an influence finite impulse response(IFIR)*** main advantage of the proposed method is that the noise statistics of process noise and measurement noise are no longer required in the fusion process,showing that a critical feature of the UFIR filter is *** numerical example and a practice-oriented case are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed *** is shown that the IFIR filter has adaptive performance and can automatically switch from the Kalman estimate to the UFIR estimates according to operating ***,the proposed method can reduce the effects of optimal horizon length on the UFIR estimate and can give the state estimates of best accuracy among all the compared methods.

control systems are often an integral part of automation solutions where high reliability is crucial due to the high cost of downtime. The risk of unplanned downtime is typically reduced with redundant solutions. Additionally, safety-critical automation functions require high-integrity controllers. Today, the prevalent redundancy solution is a standby scheme, where one active primary controller drives the process while a standby backup controller is ready to take over in case of primary failure. This redundant controller pair can consist of high - integrity controllers. The automation industry is trending towards Ethernet as the sole communication medium. Our work presents an initial study of a high-integrity realization of a redundancy failure detection mechanism that guarantees only one primary controller, even in the case of network partitioning between the redundant controller pair. The failure detection is a lease-based function that leases the primary role from a central lease broker. This work discusses a high-integrity realization of the primary redundancy role leasing. We deduce and present the high-integrity-related requirements and a high-level design as an initial step towards a high-integrity realization of the redundancy role leasing. © 2024 IEEE.

Industrial automation and control systems are responsible for running our most important infrastructures, providing electricity and clean water, producing medicine and food, along with many other services and products we take for granted. The safe and secure operation of these systems is therefore of great importance. Reliability is a fundamental requirement, with spatial controller redundancy being one important fault-tolerance mechanism. In current control system solutions, controller redundancy is implemented using state and heartbeat transfer communicated over dedicated physical links, based on an assumption of implicit trust. However, with the emerging network-centric control strategies there is a desire to transition into dynamic redundancy scenarios, where such dedicated links are unfeasible. In this paper, an approach for a threat-model based security analysis is presented from the perspective of the automation industry. The approach is applied to the communication links used for supporting control system redundancy within a network-centric architecture. © 2024 IEEE.

Reinforcement learning for optimal tracking of large-scale systems with multitime scales

This paper aims to solve an optimal tracking control(OTC) problem of large-scale systems with multitime scales and coupled subsystems using singular perturbation(SP) theory and reinforcement learning(RL) techniques. A considerable contribution of this paper is the development of a data-driven SP-based RL method for the OTC of unknown large-scale systems with multitime scales. To achieve this, a multitime scale tracking problem was decomposed into a linear quadratic tracker problem for slow subsystems and a dynamical game problem for fast subsystems using the SP theory. Then, the distributed composite feedback controllers were found using a distributed off-policy integral RL algorithm that uses only measured data from the system in real time. Thus, the operational index can follow its prescribed target value via an approximately optimal approach. Theoretical analysis and proof are presented to demonstrate that the sum of the performances of reduced-order subsystems is approximately equal to the performance of the original large-scale system. Finally, numerical and practical examples are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Wells and wellheads are essential equipment for upstream business to produce hydrocarbon product (crude oil, condensate and gas) especially wellheads where all the key isolation valves and instrumentation in place to allow the business to produce safely. These important isolation valves consist of Surface controlled Subsurface Safety Valve (SCSSV), Surface Safety Valve (SSV) and Flowing Wing Valve (FWV) which may centrally control by Wellhead control Hydraulic Panel (WHCP) via hydraulic systems. Routine test is conducted to ensure valves able to isolate hydrocarbon source during major accident hazards occurred as per API 14C or ISO10418 requirements. In Upstream Malaysia, we have encountered several challenges to meet closure time on these important isolation valves and must demonstrate ALARP to allow continue production with several mitigation in place while working on solution to resolve. Issues possess a threat over a period while structured root cause analysis (RCA) conducted. Existing aging WHCP was carried out and systematically resolved immediate issue within a year using end to end concept prescribed as Integrated Value Delivery (IVD) - a methodology cover understanding root cause of failure, improving design, organisational culture, work process and key performance indicator equipment performance monitoring for continuous improvement. In this scenario, the whole WHCP system was review from equipment ownership, related maintenance task, technical monitoring plan to prevent recurrence of major setback experience earlier. In the same time, feedback through reliability alert or lesson learnt sharing between asset and project team continues to enable a good and effective design WHCP. These improvements and lesson learnt have allowed Upstream Malaysia move from conventional WHCP that need internal combustion electric generator to a low power WHCP via renewable energy Solar or Wind.
