The basic documentation principles for complex safety related systems with interaction of computer hardware and software are derived. Based on these principles, a structured documentation method using hierarchical description strata is introduced. For each description stratum, a format for the graphic, verbal and table description is given. The application of this documentation method is demonstrated using the example of a computer controlled lift system. The method fulfills the requirements of “normal” documentations - i.e. to serve as a tool for the analysis, design, implementation and maintenance process - as well as the demands of safety related systems to perform failure mode analysis and to support safety proofs.

A simplified theoretical model for the dynamics of a side-fired steam reformer is derived. Experimental work, designed to confirm the theoretical model, is described, and the use of the results in the design of a feed-forward/feedback control scheme for throughput changes is discussed. This scheme, implemented on an on-line computer, enables large throughput changes to be made with a minimum of disturbance to the plant and a minimum of effort by the plant operators. Results from a typical throughput change are presented.
