The aim of this paper is to give an overview about some ideas that have been introduced in past few years to the course Automatic control Fundamentals at FCFT STU. These involve heavy use of information technologies and reduction of repetitive pedagogic work using e-learning techniques for the course with a large number of students. The early days of 3D graphics computing were marked by extremely expensive and highly sophisticated hardware and software. Terms like ubiquitous computing and 3D on handhelds were unthinkable. But the development of obliging common standards like OpenGL, for example, together with rapidly improving graphics technology turned the coin, and now everybody demands for high-performance user interfaces on his everyday-computing environment. Game development industry focuses on mobile technology. Automotive engineering introduces multimodal interfaces and entertainment systems for next generation cars. Although all industrial sectors ask for high performance graphics, they often focus on different aspects due to the still existing limitations of their graphics devices. This leads to a demand to revise and also optimize the graphics standards in order to make them suitable for special embedded and small-scale devices. This paper presents the state of development of OpenGL-ES, a 3D-standard for embedded graphics, its difference to regular OpenGL and its benefit for small-footprint interactive systems. Special aspects of safety-critical devices in avionics and military applications are discussed. Actual applications and research are referenced

Metabolic or cell signalling pathways are examples of biochemical networks exhibiting possible complex dynamics in the form of steady-state multiplicity, sustained oscillations or even deterministic chaos. The origin of these nonlinear phenomena is not always well understood, nor it can be systematically predicted beyond a case by case basis. Despite considerable progress in dynamic aspects, efforts are still needed to develop efficient and robust methods of stabilization and control of reaction networks. In this work, we combine concepts and tools from irreversible thermodynamics and systems theory to explore the underlying dynamic properties of a general class of chemical and biochemical networks. Lyapunov and passivity based methods are given for the systematic design of globally stabilizing feedback controllers in both the concentration space and a novel minimal description of the kinetic networks dynamics: the reaction space.

The main concern of this paper is the implementation of estimation of time-varying parameters in mechanistic models. A mechanistic model is always a set of nonlinear differential algebraic equations based on basic principles of physics, chemistry, biology etc. by writing down conservation or balance equations. These models usually involve parameters which are time-varying and must be estimated from experimental data or process data. The proposed parameter estimation approach is to minimize the discrepancy between the values of the measured and model simulated outputs. The dynamic optimization is employed due to the time-varying property of estimated parameters. The sequential quadratic programming and orthogonal collocation are used to solve the nonlinear dynamic optimization problem. The approach is verified on a pilot distillation column for estimating tray efficiencies of both the stripping and the rectifying sections and the feed composition

Surface electromyography (SEMG) is a bio-electrical manifestation related to neuromuscular activation. Electromyography pattern recognition plays an important role in SEMG application. A new SEMG pattern recognition method based on AR parameter model and clustering analysis is proposed. Four channel SEMG signals from corresponding muscles (palmaris longus, brachioradialis, flexor carpi ulnaris, biceps brachii) are picked up and analyzed with AR model parameter. Using AR model parameters as signal characteristics, an eigenvector is composed and inputted to the Mahalanobis distance classifier to identify different movement patterns. Eight movement patterns (hand grasps, hand extension, wrist circumrotates entad, wrist circumrotates forth, wrist bends, wrist spreads, forearm circumrotates entad, forearm circumrotates forth) are successfully identified. Experiments show that the proposed method performs very well and the recognition result is robust. It is believed that this method can be straightforwardly expanded to other nonstationary bioelectric signals pattern recognition study.

In wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) equipped with sludge digestion and dewatering systems, the reject water originating from these facilities contributes significantly to the nitrogen load of the activated sludge tanks, to which it is typically recycled. In this paper, the impact of reject water streams on the performance of a WWTP is assessed in a simulation study, using the Benchmark Simulation Model no. 2 (BSM2), that includes the processes describing sludge treatment and in this way allows for plant-wide evaluation. Comparison of performance of a WWTP without reject water with a WWTP where reject water is recycled to the primary clarifier, i.e. the BSM2 plant, shows that the ammonium load of the influent to the primary clarifier is 28% higher in the case of reject water recycling. This results in violation of the effluent total nitrogen limit. In order to relieve the main wastewater treatment plant, reject water treatment with a combined SHARON-Anammox process seems a promising option. The simulation results indicate that significant improvements of the effluent quality of the main wastewater treatment plant can be realized. An economic evaluation of the different scenarios is performed using an Operating Cost Index (OCI). © IWA Publishing 2006.

Despite of promising results in research, advanced control strategies fail to gain trust in wastewater treatment practice. Due to the sensitivity of the biological processes to disturbances, operators are often unable to find the causes of faults due to the lack of effective real-time on-line monitoring. Strategies for on-line monitoring are therefore essential to enhance biological process control. Therefore, a suitable multivariate soft-sensor is desired for fault detection and control for a pilot-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) system to allow effluent quality to be estimated well before off-line analysis is finished. For this purpose, several multivariate methods are available, including (linear) partial least squares (PLS), Neural Net PLS (NNPLS) and Kernel PLS (KPLS). While non-linear extensions of PLS such as NNPLS require fitting of non-linear functions, KPLS does not. KPLS is based on a non-linear transformation of the process data, followed by the fitting of a linear PLS model between the transformed inputs and outputs. PLS, NNPLS and KPLS were compared regarding their ability to predict effluent quality data and their computational requirements. While (linear) PLS and NNPLS lead to acceptable prediction, KPLS results in poor model performance. Moreover, the computational requirement of KPLS were large compared to PLS and NNPLS. When comparing PLS and NNPLS to each other, it was found that NNPLS leads to the best possible prediction given the experimental data set, while the extra computational requirements are minimal.

Common engineering approaches and modeling approaches from software engineering are brought together. For the domain of process automation an implementation oriented approach for an object oriented software development for heterogeneous distributed systems is introduced. Model elements for control are added to UML as well as small-scale patterns for plant automation. Besides large-scale patterns are introduced as well as implementational models. The adoption of UML regarding applied diagrams and stereotypes for process automation will be introduced and evaluated. Copyright © 2005 IFAC.
