EFFECTS OF LOCAL ACTUATOR ACTION ON THE control OF LARGE FLEXIBLE STRUCTURES

Active vibration damping of flexible structures requires the positioning of actuators and sensors along the structure. When the actuators become particularly small in comparison to the structure a large number of modes is necessary to accurately represent the response of the structure. Neglecting these higher modes may result in a spillover phenomenon which is capable of destabilizing the closed loop system. Therefore proper correction methods to account for the dynamics of higher modes in the structural model have to be found. One such possibility is the utilization of Frequency Response Modes (FRM), a special form of the particular solution of the equations of motion of a flexible structure. In this paper the FRM is defined and used for model correction of a simply supported beam. Finally correction terms are used to quantize local actuator action.

In this paper, a HGA fuzzy supervisory PI controller using hierarchical genetic algorithms is developed and implemented for controlling the top and bottom product quality of a nonlinear, multi-input multi-output binary distillation column when the disturbances enter the column in the form of the changes in feed flow rate. Two conventional PI controllers, one for the bottom product composition and another for the top product composition, are used together in a decentralized control scheme to per form dual composition control. Hierarchical genetic algorithms are used to derive the optimal number and shape of membership functions and fuzzy rules of a fuzzy supervisory system that adapts the parameters of the PI controllers. The real-time implementation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Common engineering approaches and modeling approaches from software engineering are brought together. For the domain of process automation an implementation oriented approach for an object oriented software development for heterogeneous distributed systems is introduced. Model elements for control are added to UML as well as small-scale patterns for plant automation. Besides large-scale patterns are introduced as well as implementational models. The adoption of UML regarding applied diagrams and stereotypes for process automation will be introduced and evaluated.

The estimation of time-variant parameters in nonlinear models remains as an open problem. In this work, we propose a new approach to addressing this problem by tuning weighting factors in the least-squares dynamic optimization. Through analysis of the solution procedure of the resulting optimization problem, it is found that parameter estimation with a weighted least-squares method is equivalent to a multi-variable closed-loop control system. The weighting factors in the objective function are equivalent to the controller parameters. Like any control system synthesis, the tuning can be made based on the output-input sensitivity analysis. The effectiveness of the approach is illustrated by estimating tray efficiencies and feed composition of a heat-integrated distillation column system. © 2005 IEEE.

In this paper, fuzzy supervisory PI controllers are developed and implemented on a pilot plant binary distillation column. Fuzzy c-means clustering technique is used in selecting membership functions and fuzzy rules are determined using fuzzy gain scheduling technique. Thus, the need of heuristic method for designing fuzzy membership functions and rules from expert knowledge is omitted. Then, the fuzzy supervisors adapt the parameters of the PI controllers on line. The task of the controllers is to perform dual composition control of the top and bottom products when the disturbances enter the column in the form of changes in feed flow rate. The results show that the fuzzy supervisory PI controllers achieve much better performance than the fixed PI controllers.

This paper will review the successful master controller revamp of Sappi Fine Paper North America's #3 Paper Machine at its Skowhegan, Maine mill. The rebuild project included upgrading the press section and increasing the speed of the paper machine by 500 FPM (150 MPM). The existing original drive system had been installed with sectional AC drives. The original drive system was becoming more difficult to maintain due to unavailability of parts and the out-of-date diagnostic system. The revamp involved the re-use of 76 existing drives and the installation of 8 new AC sectional drives. A new master controller was added with an enhanced diagnostic HMI. The new master controller architecture communicated with, controlled and diagnosed the old drives as well as the new drives. The unique combination of existing drives and new drives formed a cohesive system with all of the advantages of a new drive system. A staged installation was performed to reduce the outage time impact. The paper machine rebuild project was completed in March 2003 and has met the expectations of a successful revamp. © 2004 IEEE.
