This paper presents fuzzy identification of two bioprocesses employing TSK-type models. A “Modified Gram-Schmidt” (MGS) orthogonal estimator is used to estimate the consequent parameters. This approach is then applied to identify two distinct cases involving dissolved oxygen concentration: one related to a bioreactor and the other one related to an activated sludge process. The obtained models are then cross-validated.

The internal model control (IMC) scheme has been widely applied in the field of processcontrol. So far, IMC has been mainly applied to linear processes. This paper discusses the extension of the IMC scheme to nonlinear processes based on local linear models where the properties of linear design procedures can be exploited. The IMC scheme results in controllers that are comparable to gain-scheduled PI or PID controllers which are the standard controllers in process industry. In practice, the tuning of conventional PI or PID controllers can be very time-consuming whereas the IMC design procedure is very simple and reliable. In this paper, the design effort of the IMC and conventional controller design methods will be discussed and control results will be compared by application to nonlinear control of an industrial-scale heat exchanger.

Internal thermally coupled distillation column(ITCDIC) is a frontier in energy saving distillation research. In this paper, the optimal assessment on the energy saving and the operating cost for ITCDIC of nonideal mixture is explored. An evaluating method is proposed, and the pertinent optimization model is then derived. The ethanol-water system is studied as an illustrative example. The optimization results show that the maximum energy saving in ITCDIC process is about 35% and the maximum operating cost saving in ITCDIC process is about 30%,as compared with a conventional distillation column(CDIC) under the minimum reflux ratio operating; the optimal operating pressure of the rectifying section is found to be around 0.25 MPa; the effects of the feed composition,operating pressure and the heat transfer rate on operation are also found and analyzed. It is revealed that ITCDIC process possesses high energy saving potential and promising economical prospect.

One of the most interesting recently developed brain activity imaging methods is functional MR imaging (fMRI). The advantages of fMRI, i.e. noninvasiveness, reproducibility and interactivity of examination, must be measured against the problems like data distortion and limited time for examination. A major problem is that most fMRI segmentation procedures are partly interactive. There is a high demand for precisely and automatically working segmentation algorithms in order to get meaningful results within an acceptable short time. The increasing spread of fieldbus installations in industrial environment leads to increased amount of information and a large number of new innovative functionalities. These are not only important for classical tasks of processcontrolengineering (like plant and process supervision or processcontrol), but also for advanced functions, like synthesised plant data for the economical optimisation of technical system support. The concept of the Asset Management Box (AMBox) is considered, which realises an additional information channel between field and plant control level. This contribution describes the AMBox as an open, configuration-free and manufacturer-independent access to field device functionality for the PROFIBUS-PA fieldbus. Since the configuration data of field devices to perform their functional role is kept, exchanging field devices is possible without need for reconfiguration. Finally, some Asset Management applications of the AMBox are discussed.

Fault detection is increasingly an essential part of vehicle development. Integrating such fault detection subsystems raises the reliability, maintainability, and safety of automobile components. Until now, the suspension system was not a safety-critical component, but with the introduction of global chassis control systems this system is getting more important. Therefore, the paper presents fault detection algorithms for the suspension system. Real measurements of a vehicle are made to compare the advantages of the different fault detection algorithms.

Due to the increasing demands concerning reliability, safety and economy of technical processes, the on-line monitoring of induction motors is an important topic in the engineering field. In this paper, a model-based approach for fault detection and diagnosis of nonlinear processes is employed. The supervision of nonlinear systems is often very difficult in view of the lack of accurate models. However, neuro-fuzzy models may help to cope with this problem, as they can be trained from measured data. In this contribution the application of a multi-model approach for fault detection and diagnosis of induction motors is presented. For this purpose the process is decomposed in several subprocesses.
