This paper introduces the concept of proactive execution of robot tasks in the context of human-robot cooperation with uncertain knowledge of the human's intentions. We present a system architecture that defines the necessary modules of the robot and their interactions with each other. The two key modules are the intention recognition that determines the human user's intentions and the planner that executes the appropriate tasks based on those intentions. We show how planning conflicts due to the uncertainty of the intention information are resolved by proactive execution of the corresponding task that optimally reduces the system's uncertainly. Finally, we present an algorithm for selecting this task and suggest a benchmark scenario.

The global and local stability of process systems in generalized Lotka-Volterra form is studied in this paper using entropy-like and quadratic Lyapunov function candidates. The global stability check for LV models is performed by solving an LMI for a diagonal positive semi-definite matrix using singular perturbation technique. It is shown that a quadratic Lyapunov function can also be determined by solving linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). In addition, the quadratic stability neighborhood is convex in the space of the quasi-monomials and can be estimated by computing its comer points using LMIs. Furthermore, it is proved that quadratic stability with a diagonal weighting matrix enables to construct adissipative-Hamiltonian description of the system. The developed methods are illustrated on the model of a continuously stirred tank reactor with a nonlinear reaction system. Copyright © 2004 IFAC.

In the framework of interval decision making, the available information is vague and numerically imprecise and the decision situation is modelled by imprecise probabilities and utilities that are simply represented by suitable intervals and comparisons. Alternatives are therefore evaluated in terms of interval expected utilities, which are then used for expressing crisp preferences among these alternatives. In this work, we use the overlap of the above interval expected utilities for expressing valued preferences among the alternatives. In particular, a chain of interval order relations associated with the constructed valued preference relation is studied and the concept of admissibility is expressed in terms of non-dominated alternatives induced by such relations.

In this paper recent improvements of an existing acoustic frontend for the transcription of vocal (hummed, sung) musical queries is presented. Thanks to the addition of a new second pitch extractor and the introduction of a novel multi-stage segmentation algorithm, the application domain of the front-end could be extended to whistled queries, and on top of that, the performance on the other two query types could be improved. Experiments have shown that the new system can transcribe vocal queries with an accuracy ranging from 76 % (whistling) to 85 % (humming), and that it clearly outperforms other state-of-the art systems on all three query types.

We seek to build CIS research systems within a flexible, open architecture. In this paper, we outline our solutions to the problems of system design, construction, and integration in this environment: building distributed, modular systems for sensing, control, and processing. Based on our experience building these systems, we utilize distributed network architectures, modular software components, and intelligent object distribution to maximize flexibility while complying with the particular needs and interfaces of specific components. While a work in progress, these approaches have been integrated into several systems in development and have demonstrated significant utility, based on construction time and system flexibility. This paper will discuss the first two aspects: modular software and basic network architectures, while intelligent object distribution is presented in a companion paper. Based on the applications we have targeted and technologies we have used, this paper introduces our architecture and its components. It then presents the system’s current state and finally, discusses plans for future improvements and extensions. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000.

A self – tuning PID controller algorithm has been derived in this paper. The process is identified by the regression (ARX) continuous – time model using the recursive least squares method (RLSM) with applied directional forgetting. The recursive parameter estimates of the continuous – time model (differential equation) are used to synthesis the PID controller. controller synthesis is designed on the basis of a dynamics inversion method. This method allows the tuning of standard analog and digital controllers for chosen types of controlled processes without or with time delay. The algorithm is suitable for the automatic setting of analog and digital PID controllers for deterministic processes or the adaptive control of stochastic and nonlinear processes. The analog modification PID controller has been verified by computer simulation.

SDL is currently gaining interest as a system level specification language for HW/SW codesign. Automated synthesis of SDL in hardware so far had problems with its efficiency. The investigations on the resource usage of SDL-to-VHDL designs presented in this paper identify two key challenges: minimizing the overhead introduced by SDL process infrastructure, and choosing the appropriate synthesis method. This paper presents a framework for SDL hardware synthesis where VHDL code generation, high-level synthesis and RT-level synthesis are combined. A configurable run-time environment implements services like data handling and message passing in efficient, hand-coded library components, which take into account properties of the target architecture. For these components RT-level synthesis was found to be suitable. The behavior of each SDL process on the other hand is freely specified by the system designer. Depending on the type of application, i.e. complex data-oriented or control-oriented either high-level synthesis, RT-level synthesis, or a combination of both can prove to be optimal.
