This study investigates the recovery of hydrogen from a gaseous mixture of hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide using a counter-current flow through a Pd82-Ag18/α-Al2O3 membrane during start-up period. The objective is to understand the transient behavior of hydrogen permeation through the Pd82-Ag18/α-Al2O3 membrane with focus for binary, ternary, and quaternary mixtures. A (Formula Presented) thick Pd82-Ag18/α-Al2O3membrane was prepared by electroless plating and was supported by an α-Al2O3 tube with a 1.5-mm thickness. Hydrogen separation was performed at a temperature of (Formula Presented) and atmospheric pressure. The membrane was operated for an 8-h period commenced from start-up and the performance of the Pd82-Ag18/α-Al2O3 membrane was measured in terms of hydrogen flux and hydrogen recovery. The results showed a slight membrane deactivation because of the presence of N2 and CO2 in the mixed feed gas, while a pronounced deactivation was observed when CO was a constituent of the feed gas. The effect of the co-existing gases on the hydrogen flux, in increasing order, was CO > CO2 > N2. The co-existing gases, if present as a large fraction in the feed, induces dilution, concentration polarization, and inhibition over the membrane surface, which in turn, decreases the performance of the Pd82-Ag18/α-Al2O3 membrane. © 2022, The Authors. Biobutanol exhibits high octane number, non-hygroscopic, non-corrosive and can be mixed with gasoline without engine modification. Furthermore, the use of biobutanol as a fuel can reduce the negative impact of environmental due to the use of fossil-based fuel. Therefore, research on the development of biobutanol is still very much needed, including research on modelling and simulation of biobutanol production by fermentation. With modelling and simulation, we can predict various biobutanol production behaviour. This paper deals with the modelling and simulation of the production of biobutanol from glucose in batch bioreactor using Clostridium saccharoperbutylacetonicum N1-4. C. saccharoperbutylacetonicum N1-4 exhibits a good growth ability on simple or complex sugars, such as glucose, sucrose, or starch. This study concerned with the kinetics models of biobutanol production as developed by Shinto based on the C. acetobutylicum metabolic pathway which consists of the glycolysis, acidogenesis and solventogenesis pathways with several simplification of reactions. In this study, modelling was carried out by adapting the rate parameter value of k13 indicating the rate constant of cell death. The adapted models were applied to determine the effect of the initial concentration of glucose and organic acids on the production of butanol and compared to the experimental data from previous research. Model simulations were performed by using MATLAB® software. The butanol yield was affected by the initial glucose concentration. The highest butanol yield of 77% was obtained at a glucose concentration of 22 g/L. The simulation results exhibit that the biobutanol yield decreases when the glucose concentration is higher than 22 g/L. These results are consistent with previous experimental data. The simulation results also show the effect of the concentration of acetic acid in the fermentation medium and can be optimized. From the simulation results, the presence of 7.5 g/L acetic acid

This research is aimed to study the synthesis of mercapto ethyl ester of fatty acid (MEFA) using palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD). The synthesis was carried out in a jacketed stirred vessel. Water as a byproduct was removed by using vacuum evaporation. p-Toluene sulfonic acid was used as catalyst. Temperature, mercaptoethanol excess, and catalyst amount were varied during the experiments. The variations ranges were 60-80°C, 5-25 %-mole, and 0.8-3.2 %-mole, respectively. The accomplishment of reaction was evaluated by measuring the mercaptan content and yield of MEFA. The mercaptan content and yield of MEFA were in the ranges of 6.4-8.0% and 64-86%, respectively. It was found that mercaptan content and yield increased with temperature. The optimum temperature was found to be 70°C, considering the mercaptan content, yield, and appearance of the product obtained. A full 22 factorial design at a reaction temperature of 70°C showed that mercaptoethanol excess and catalyst amount had significant effects on the mercaptan content and yield of MEFA. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2018.

In the domain of generation of wind turbine energy, it is central to correctly estimate the interactions among the various turbines in a wind turbine farm. The spatial super-position of turbine wind wakes determines the wind conditions that each turbine in the farm is exposed to and its power output. The current state of the art represents the turbine wakes as a 2D real-valued polygonal trapezoid. The interactions among wakes imply Boolean operations among many trapezoids, producing an intractable fragmentation of the wake intersection and domain regions. The plan (2D) view of the terrain with this wake polygon fragmentation is then used to estimate the effective wind that each turbine receives. This calculation leads to cumbersome computation, which is even more impractical if 3D representations of the terrain, wakes and wind are needed. In response to these limitations, this manuscript presents a method in which the 2D turbine wakes are located on a terrain with holes and exclusion zones bounded by 2D polygons, considering wind direction and turbine array basic specifications. Then, a discretized or pixel approximation of the terrain and wake superposition is calculated using discrete levels of the turbine velocity deficits. This process allows a practical approximation of the power output of each turbine and of the full turbine set. The wake interaction and terrain boundaries are then texture - mapped onto the 3D representation of the terrain, for visualization purposes. As an application, an example of a complex polygonal terrain turbine farm is optimized for maximal power output. This discrete, image - based calculation is particularly convenient in a circumstance in which graphics hardware and GPU processors become increasingly available and efficient, in laptop and mobile devices. This research was aimed to evaluate the synthesis of mercaptoethyl ester of palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD) where water as a byproduct was removed by using vacuum distillation and azeotropic distillation. The reactions were done in a batch reactor using para-toluene sulfonic acid (pTSA) as a catalyst. The performances of the synthesis were evaluated by measuring the sulfhydryl content and yield of the product. Compared to dehydration by vacuum distillation, dehydration by azeotropic distillation gave lower sulfhydryl content and yield but faster reaction completion. Azeotropic distillation gave sulfhydryl content and yield in the range of 6–7% and 57–74%, respectively. Vacuum distillation gave sulfhydryl content and yield in the range of 7–9% and 75–85%, respectively.

Ferrous Ion and Medium Composition Effects on Acidogenic Phase in Biobutanol Production from Molasses

Clostridium acetobutylicum B530 has ability to convert sugar into biobutanol through two phases, i.e. acidogenic and solventogenic. This fermentation process is often hampered by high raw material cost and low product yield. In order to suppress the production cost, the molasses, a byproduct of sugar cane process production, was used as carbon source in this research. Molasses has nitrogen content in a small amount, thus could be negating the beef extract component, which is expected not to affect the growth of C. acetobutylicum B530 and also can reduce the production cost. In addition, a certain amount of Fe2+ (ferrous ion), a precursor in the formation of the enzyme ferredoxin, was added to the fermentation medium to contribute in the synthesis of acetyl-CoA, so that the formation of acidogenic products such as butyric acid and acetic acid is affected. This study aimed to investigate the effect of ferrous ion and the medium composition in acidogenic phase. The addition of 20 ppm FeSO4.7H2O in the fermentation medium without beef extract can increase the concentration of butyric acid by 20% at a temperature of 35°C, while acetic acid concentration decreased by 6%. According to those results, it is expected that the product selectivity of butanol will increase in solventogenic phase. In addition, the removal of beef extract in the fermentation medium does not affect the kinetics of growth of C. acetobutylicum B530.

Lignocellulosic biomass is a potential raw material for bioethanol production. Neurospora sp. can be used to convert lignocellulosic biomass into bioethanol because of its ability to perform simultaneous saccharification and fermentation. However, lignin content, degree of polymerization, and crystallinity of cellulose contained in lignocellulosic biomass can inhibit cellulosic-biomass digestion by Neurospora sp, so that a suitable pretreatment method of lignocellulosic biomass is needed. The focus of this research was to investigate the suitable pretreatment method for vetiver leaves (Vetiveria zizanioides L. Nash) used as a raw material producing bioethanol in the process of simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) by Neurospora sp.. Vetiver plants obtained from Garut are deliberately cultivated to produce essential oils extracted from the roots of this plant. Since the vetiver leaves do not contain oil, some of harvested leaves are usually used for crafts and cattle feed, and the rest are burned. This study intended to look at other potential of vetiver leaves as a source of renewable energy. Pretreatments of the vetiver leaves were conducted using hot water, dilute acid, alkaline & dilute acid, and alkaline peroxide, in which each method was accompanied by thermal treatment. The results showed that the alkaline peroxide treatment is a suitable for vetiver leaves as indicated by the increase of cellulose content up to 65.1%, while the contents of hot water soluble, hemicellulose, lignin, and ash are 8.7%, 18.3%, 6.8%, and 1.1%, respectively. Using this pretreatment method, the vetiver leaves can be converted into bioethanol by SSF process using Neurospora sp. with a concentration of bioethanol of 6.7 g/L operated at room temperature.
