Solar energy conversion to thermal energy has enormous potential for meeting the need for heat energy in a variety of applications. A parabolic trough solar collector (PTSC) has proven to be effective in solar to thermal conversion. Installing a PTSC to service a specific application necessitates a large setup and significant cost, so it would be beneficial if such system analytically tested and optimized beforehand. As a result, the study relating to finding the options that might assist in improving the PTSC performance becomes critical. Modelling the PTSC is one such useful way that can assess it and suggest possible changes. Thus, surveying the literature in this area becomes equally important. This study attempts to explore the potential of dynamic modelling of PTSC's and its control mechanisms. A summary of the prospects for PTSC dynamic modelling is offered, a simplified basis is given to reader by covering the fundamentals of modelling methodologies, as well as the associated research that go along with them. Further, PTSC control components and improvements are investigated. Relevant discussion about the possibilities and limitations are provided, future scopes are also included. © 2023

Due to the rising greenhouse gas emissions and high energy prices, it is now more important than ever to use renewable energy sources in various applications. Parabolic trough solar collector (PTSC) converts solar energy to thermal energy and can serve applications like power generation, industrial process heat, desalination, etc. Optimization of governing process parameters for such a system can improve its efficiency and increase its share in different applications. Heat transfer fluid (HTF) flow rate is one of the critical parameters in the working of PTSC. The current study investigates the impact of HTF flow rate on the efficiency of PTSC and estimates the optimal flow rate for a specific system and at a certain temperature. It is revealed that despite increased pumping efforts, increasing the flow rate above a critical value did not guarantee an increase in system performance. This highlighted that an optimum mass flow rate value should be determined that maintains acceptable thermal efficiency while requiring least pumping effort. The value of optimal flow rate has been computed using a multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA). The best compromise solution identified after a diligent Pareto front analysis was observed at HTF flow rate = 11.34 m3/h with pump work = 0.66 W and thermal efficiency = 73.08%. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Food processing, paper, chemicals, refining, iron and steel, aluminum, and cement are considered to be most energy intensive industries. Increase in high demand of energy and stochastic variation in gross profit of industries highly influence the energy consumption in these industries. Predicted improvements in energy efficiency in the industrial sector have high spirit of energy demand in industrial sector, particularly for the energy-intensive industries such as food, paper mills. Recycling is a key contributor specially;in the paper mills that improves energy efficiency. An approximate estimate reveals that one-ton pulp produces ~7-ton black liquor with energy of 14.0 MJ per kg of solids. Bio fuels produced from the black liquor is used in the recovery boiler, the solid content of the black liquor required to be escalation by suitable concentration in a Multiple Effect Evaporator (MEE). Hence, Kraft recovery process recycles the weak and organically (lignin) rich black liquor using MEE. However, MEE accounts about half of the total energy input to the paper mills, and constitutes the biggest integral section of their unit operations. Therefore, energy reduction schemes (ERS) are the most imperative issues which are still need to be solved. Hence, the present paper investigates the development of generalized linear mathematical model with simulation using numerical method to compute steam efficiency and steam consumption of backward and parallel feed flow arrangements. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Nowadays, among various water treatment and desalination technologies such as reverse osmosis (RO), multi-effect distillation (MED), and multi-stage flash (MSF), RO is an appropriate and suitable technology in the world. It is extremely used technology (>60%) around the globe. It is quite popular in separation and filtering process, especially for drinking water services as well as industrial applications. Modelling and simulation of such plants are necessary for better analysis and understanding with minimum effort, energy, and time. It involves various machine learning techniques such as an artificial neural network (ANN), support vector machine (SVM). Among these techniques, ANN is one of the best and reliable techniques, which provides good results. ANN may be learned through numerous training algorithms such as back-propagation (BP), particle swarm optimization (PSO);PSO-ANN learning algorithm generated the optimal values of initial weights and biases and to train the network. In this article, experimental datasets of RO plants have been collected from the literature and the regression coefficient (R) along with minimum mean square error (MSE) are evaluated. Four input variables (temperature T (°C), pressure P (MPa), feed concentration C (Mg/L), and pH) and three output variables (water recovery (%), total dissolved solids (TDS) rejection (%), and specific energy consumption (SEC) (kWh/m3)) are considered for analysis. The simulated results observed better regression coefficients (R) (0.98557, 0.96016, and 0.97118) with minimum MSE (0.5502%, 0.9389%, and 1.5755%), respectively, corresponding to output variables of the RO plant. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Sorting of the components on the basis of their features is an important process extensively required in industries mainly on assembly and production lines. Such systems are of significant importance in selective assembly processes where the part to be delivered is decided on the basis of real time requirements. This not only does away with the requirement of manual labor, but also addresses the issue of mistakes arising from fatigue and negligence of human worker, plus there is definitely an increase in productivity by the use of such systems as they offer the advantage of complete automation of the process. The present system has been developed with a view to provide an effective, simple and low cost solution to identification and sorting system applications. The system has been developed by using less costly and robust sensors and actuators such that the electronic circuitry involved is also simple and can meet the demands where flexibility of a concern because the present system can quickly be reprogrammed to meet any changed circumstance within the operating range of the system. System presently developed is based on sorting on the basis of component color. The system does not need to hit its home position each time it makes a delivery, rather it takes its present position as the reference and can make a quick move to the next delivery, saving a significant time. The system has successfully been tested and is found to give an error less than 1% in total number of trials conducted. © 2018 Newswood Limited. All rights reserved.

Majority of industrial pipelines and process vessels are constructed from conducting composites. This paper focusing on the hardware and software development of laboratory test Electrical Resistance Tomography (ERT) measurement methods to obtain the cross-sectional image of the conductivity distribution of gas bubble phantom in a static vertical metallic column filled with water. The system with sixteen sensors implementation was investigated on a stainless steel vertical column of 100 mm inner diameter. The conducting boundary strategy was applied as the measurement strategy. Software for the current study was developed using Graphical User Interface (GUI) application program in MATLAB. The software contains many functions to ease user to get necessary information from the research done. The cross section image of the bubble phantom was reconstructed using Linear Back Projection (LBP) algorithm after the data collection process was completed. The system has been tested and can successfully generate the phantom under test.

This paper addresses the robust stabilization problem for T-S fuzzy stochastic descriptor systems using an integral sliding mode control paradigm. A classical integral sliding mode control scheme and a nonparallel distributed compensation (Non-PDC) integral sliding mode control scheme are presented. It is shown that two restrictive assumptions previously adopted developing sliding mode controllers for Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy stochastic systems are not required with the proposed framework. A unified framework for sliding mode control of T-S fuzzy systems is formulated. The proposed Non-PDC integral sliding mode control scheme encompasses existing schemes when the previously imposed assumptions hold. Stability of the sliding motion is analyzed and the sliding mode controller is parameterized in terms of the solutions of a set of linear matrix inequalities which facilitates design. The methodology is applied to an inverted pendulum model to validate the effectiveness of the results presented.

Electrical Resistance Tomography (ERT), due to its diverse advantages has become a promising technique for monitoring and analysing various industrial flows. In this research, an ERT system employing a conducting bubble column was studied because a majority of industrial processes use metal composites for their columns. This paper presents an approach to obtain the optimum size of electrodes in ERT to maximize the capability of an ERT system. A finite element model using COMSOL software was developed to investigate the effect of the electrode size in ERT on sensing field distribution. By adapting the conducting boundary strategies in COMSOL, wider and longer electrodes reduce the potential change near source, suggesting less current density near source. Besides that, wider and longer electrodes also reduce the potential drop and improve the signal strength in Electrical Resistance Tomography. The optimum size of 12 mm x 100 mm electrode is sufficient for the proposed ERT system using conducting bubble column.
