We present a novel approach to address the representation issue and the matching issue in face ***,our approach encodes the micro-structures of the face by a new learning-based encoding *** many previous manually designed encoding methods,we use unsupervised learning techniques to learn an encoder from the training examples,which can automatically achieve very good tradeoff between discriminative power and *** we apply PCA to get a compact face *** find that a simple normalization mechanism after PCA can further improve the discriminative ability of the *** resulting face representation,learning-based descriptor,is compact,highly discriminative,and *** handle the large pose variation in real-life scenarios,we propose a pose-adaptive matching method that uses pose-specific classifiers to deal with different pose combinations of the matching face *** approach is comparable with the state-of-the-art methods on the Labeled Face in Wild(LFW) benchmark,while maintaining excellent compactness,simplicity,and generalization ability across different datasets.

We investigated the effect of voluntary movement on temporal multimodal integration using a psychological experiment. The present study used auditory-tactile Temporal Order Judgment (TOJ) task to measure the differences in Point of Subjective Simultaneity (PSS) and Just Noticeable Difference (JND). To distinguish the effect of voluntary movement and proprioceptive feedback, we prepared three conditions: Voluntary condition, Involuntary condition, and No-movement condition. Voluntary movement and Involuntary movement shifted PSS to the point where an auditory stimulus presented prior to a tactile stimulus compared to No-movement condition. Furthermore, the shift of PSS in Voluntary condition was larger than that in Involuntary condition. JND of Voluntary condition was smaller than those of the other two conditions. These results revealed that voluntary movement improved temporal resolution between auditory and tactile stimuli. Moreover, it was demonstrated that voluntary movement also alternates audio-tactile temporal integration.

We investigated the effect of the efference copy and the proprioceptive feedback on auditory-tactile temporal order judgment, using Temporal Order Judgment (TOJ) task to measure the differences in Point of Subjective Simultaneity (PSS) and Just Noticeable Difference (JND). These parameters were measured under Voluntary condition, Involuntary condition, and No-movement condition. While both the Involuntary and Voluntary conditions contain proprioceptive feedback, only Voluntary condition contains efference copy. JND of Voluntary condition was smaller than that of No-movement condition. PSS was significantly different among the three conditions. Movement condition shifted PSS to the point where auditory stimulus presented prior to tactile stimulus compared to No-movement condition. Furthermore, the shift in PSS of Voluntary condition was larger than that of Involuntary condition. These results suggest that each proprioceptive information and efference copy accelerates tactile perception, and voluntary movement improves the resolution of TOJ for audio-tactile stimulus, while the proprioceptive information alone does not achieve significant effect of improvement on the judgment in involuntary motion.

We develop an approach to understanding long chaotic transients in networks of excitatory pulse-coupled oscillators. Our idea is to identify a class of attractors, sequentially active firing (SAF) attractors, in terms of the temporal event structure of firing and receipt of pulses. Then all attractors can be classified into two groups: SAF attractors and non-SAF attractors. We establish that long transients typically arise in the transitional region of the parameter space where the SAF attractors are collectively destabilized. Bifurcation behavior of the SAF attractors is analyzed to provide a detailed understanding of the long irregular transients. Although demonstrated using pulse-coupled oscillator networks, our general methodology may be useful in understanding the origin of transient chaos in other types of networked systems, an extremely challenging problem in nonlinear dynamics and complex systems.

This paper presents a textural feature descriptor that can be effectively utilized for grading Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) histopathological images. The proposed feature descriptor observes the local and spatial characteristics of the texture by utilizing multifractal computation, and it is incorporated with a bag-of-feature (BOF)-based classification model to classify a set of images. We compare the proposed feature descriptor with four well-founded feature descriptors in the experiments, and benchmark the classification performances. The benchmarked results indicated the significance of the multifractal feature descriptor.

We propose a novel coarse-graining tensor renormalization group method based on the higher-order singular value decomposition. This method provides an accurate but low computational cost technique for studying both classical and quantum lattice models in two or three dimensions. We have demonstrated this method using the Ising model on the square and cubic lattices. By keeping up to 16 bond basis states, we obtain by far the most accurate numerical renormalization group results for the three-dimensional Ising model. We have also applied the method to study the ground state as well as finite temperature properties for the two-dimensional quantum transverse Ising model and obtain the results which are consistent with published data.

Integrating a scalable and effcient semi-Lagrangian multi-tracer transport scheme in HOMME

With the inclusion of a scalable spectral-element-based version of the High-Order Method Modeling Environment (HOMME) in NCAR's Community Atmosphere Model (CAM) and the need for on the order of 100 prognostic tracers in next generation climate modeling efforts, there is an urgent need for a scalable, monotonic, and conservative multitracer advection scheme in HOMME. To address this, we integrate a Conservative Semi-LAgrangian Multi-tracer transport scheme (CSLAM) into HOMME. The algorithm is specifically re-designed for multiple processors and the cubed-sphere grid with the element-wise domain decomposition as employed by HOMME. Based on these spectral elements, we create a finite volume mesh and add a halo zone of cells since a higher-order CSLAM needs a patch of tracer values for a reconstruction that extend the element. Therefore, we extend HOMME to also be capable of communicating cell center data. Our data structures and design allow us to provide a numerical scheme that still conserves mass locally to machine precision and is also monotone on multiple processor systems, but reduces the communication of tracer values by one for each time step. This is based on the idea that we calculate the reconstruction coeffcients redundantly, in a cell of an element and in the corresponding cell in the halo zone. Our algorithm of CSLAM in HOMME is the first one for multiple processor systems and multi-tracers that is highly scalable and effcient.
