This study investigates whether people entrain their body sway in everyday face-to-face communication. Interpersonal entrainment has been observed under experimental conditions, but not in daily life. We used wearable sensors to measure individual body vibration and face-to-face interactions in daily life. The observation included at least 100 participants from each of seen organization over a period of two to three months. We carried out measurements over a period of two to three months for each organization. It was found that the body vibration frequencies of two participants become more closer in face-to-face situations than in non-face-to-face situations. This result suggests that interpersonal entrainment of body sway occurs in everyday face-to-face communication.

A hybrid differential evolution-binary particle swarm optimization (DE-BPSO) algorithm is proposed as a feature selection algorithm in the development of quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models. DE is used to evolve the velocities of the particle swarm from which a series of rules are used to determine the discrete values of the position vectors which form chemical descriptor subsets. These descriptor subsets are then used to develop models for QSAR analysis. DE-BPSO was found to outperform the standalone BPSO algorithm. The DE-BPSO algorithm was then used to develop multiple linear regression models for the analysis of aryl β-diketo acid compounds for the inhibition of HIV-1 integrase. This model highlights the significance of hydrophobicity and partial positive charges of the hydrogen atoms on the molecular surface in influencing the biological activities of these compounds for the inhibition of HIV-1 integrase. © 2012 IEEE.

For a class of uncertain multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) discrete-time nonlinear systems with strong coupling and unstable zero-dynamics, an adaptive generalized predictive decoupling switching control method based on unmodeled dynamic compensation is proposed. It is only required that the higher order nonlinear terms of the system to satisfy a linear growth condition, rather than the global boundedness condition widely used. The analysis of stability and convergence of the adaptive control method are performed. Moreover, in designing the nonlinear generalized predictive decoupling controller, we combine the adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) training with the "one-toone mapping" technique to adaptively estimate the unmodeled dynamics, so that the universal approximation property of ANFIS can be guaranteed. Finally, simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method and validate the theoretical analysis.

During the last decade, the growing load of sludge from textile industries, the top foreign exchange earning sector of Bangladesh, is a common nuisance to environmental system and community health. The present study was aimed to minimize the environmental impact from the disposal of Electrocoagulated Metal Hydroxide Sludge (EMHS) by using it as a partial substitute of clay in the manufacturing of construction material like building blocks (BBs). Different batches of normal and pressurized building blocks (NBBs and PBBs, resp.) were prepared using up to 50% EMHS with clay and then fired at a particular temperature. EMHS proportion in the mixture and firing temperature were two key factors determining the quality of BB. BB did not show any deformation or uneven surfaces at any of the examined firing temperature. At higher firing temperature and EMHS proportion, more weight loss and shrinkage of BB were noticed. Higher compressive strength and lower water adsorption were found at lower EMHS content and higher firing temperature. It was explored that NBB and PBB with 20 and 30% EMHS in clay, respectively, and fired at 1050 °C would be usable for nonloading applications; namely, ornamental bricks, decoration purposes, and fence of garden.

We apply a PARADISE-style evaluation to a human-human dialogue corpus that was collected to support the design of a spoken dialogue system for library transactions. The book request dialogue task we investigate is informational in nature: a book request is considered successful if the librarian is able to identify a specific book for the patron. PARADISE assumes that user satisfaction can be modeled as a regression over task success and dialogue costs. The PARADISE model we derive includes features that characterize two types of qualitative features. The first has to do with the specificity of the communicative goals, given a request for an item. The second has to do with the number and location of overlapping turns, which can sometimes signal rapport between the speakers. © 2011 Association for computational Linguistics.

The dual cell concept is a novel design for solid oxide fuel cells operating at intermediate temperature. The cell comprises a series of five layers with different compositions, alternating two dense electrolytes and three porous layers, i.e. the outer electrodes and a central membrane. The dual cell concept makes it possible to separate the compartment for water formation from both fuel and oxidant chambers. Such a three-chamber configuration gives many advantages related to fuel dilution, materials corrosion, and reversibility between fuel cell and electrolyser operational modes (SOFC/SOEC) at high temperature. Dual conductivity (protonic/anionic) can be achieved by joining two dense BaCe0.85Y0.15O3–δ (BCY) and Ce0.85Y0.15O2–δ (YDC) electrolytes through a porous ceramic central membrane made up of both materials. Complete anode-supported dual cells have been fabricated by a combination of pressing, casting, printing, wet spraying, and plasma spraying techniques. Electrochemical tests carried out by impedance spectroscopy showed the feasibility of the concept and successful reversible operation of the dual cell. The fabrication route, the microstructural and electrochemical testing results are reported in this work, and partially compared to simulated results from an electrochemical model developed describing the dual cell concept.

We study the dynamics of two identical atoms resonantly coupled to a single-mode cavity under practical feedback control, and focus on the detection inefficiency. The entanglement is induced to vanish in finite time by the inefficiency of detection. Counterintuitively, the asymptotic entanglement and quantum discord can be increased by the inefficiency of detection. The noise of detection triggers the control field to create entanglement and discord when no photons are emitted from the atoms. Furthermore, sudden change happens to the dynamics of entanglement.

Dynamic time warping (DTW), which finds the minimum path by providing non-linear alignments between two time series, has been widely used as a distance measure for time series classification and clustering. However, DTW does not account for the relative importance regarding the phase difference between a reference point and a testing point. This may lead to misclassification especially in applications where the shape similarity between two sequences is a major consideration for an accurate recognition. Therefore, we propose a novel distance measure, called a weighted DTW (WDTW), which is a penalty-based DTW. Our approach penalizes points with higher phase difference between a reference point and a testing point in order to prevent minimum distance distortion caused by outliers. The rationale underlying the proposed distance measure is demonstrated with some illustrative examples. A new weight function, called the modified logistic weight function (MLWF), is also proposed to systematically assign weights as a function of the phase difference between a reference point and a testing point. By applying different weights to adjacent points, the proposed algorithm can enhance the detection of similarity between two time series. We show that some popular distance measures such as DTW and Euclidean distance are special cases of our proposed WDTW measure. We extend the proposed idea to other variants of DTW such as derivative dynamic time warping (DDTW) and propose the weighted version of DDTW. We have compared the performances of our proposed procedures with other popular approaches using public data sets available through the UCR Time Series Data Mining Archive for both time series classification and clustering problems. The experimental results indicate that the proposed approaches can achieve improved accuracy for time series classification and clustering problems. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
