An evaluation strategy for visual key image retrieval systems is proposed in order to show the design criteria of a querying interface on mobile devices. Indexes (lists of visual keys) generated by different parameters are analyzed, and indexes derived by different visual keys are validated using ArtExplosion 600,000, which contains about 300 semantic categories and over 100,000 natural photos. The result suggests that access to a collection with a visual key can provide one to three relevant images in rank 10 when the number of visual keys is 60, which is the lower limit. In portable devices, which can display 16 visual keys per page, users can at least access a required image by browsing only 4 pages with 60 visual keys, and can use the image for related subsequent queries by using the other image retrieval functions.

At Google, the PageRank algorithm helps rankings in search results by providing measures of web page importance. This paper builds upon the distributed randomized approach for this algorithm proposed in our recent works. To reduce computation and communication, we develop a method to systematically aggregate web pages into groups by exploiting the sparsity inherent in the web. Each group computes an aggregated PageRank, which can be distributed among group members. We provide a decentralized scheme for its computation and analyze convergence properties.

We propose an algorithm used to obtain the information on stride length, height difference, and direction based on user's intent during walking. For exoskeleton robots used to assist paraplegic patients' walking, this information is used to generate gait patterns by themselves in on-line. To obtain this information, we attach an inertial measurement unit(IMU) on crutches and apply an extended kalman filter-based error correction method to reduce the phenomena of drift due to bias of the IMU. The proposed method is verifed in real walking scenarios including walking, climbing up-stairs, and changing direction of walking with normal.
