Agile Working during COVID-19 Pandemic

Values and principles of agile working emphasize the benefits of personal communication and open team spaces with members sitting in close proximity. This facilitates customer-oriented results and reduces the risk for failures based on misunderstandings. During the current COVID-19 pandemic, most companies reduced office times and encouraged their employees to work from home in order to protect people from infection. Direct face-to-face communication was replaced by online meetings using video conferencing, chats, and cloud-based collaboration. This significantly changed the way of working. While online-based tools for remote collaboration were familiar to many employees before, others were reluctant to use them in the past. The sudden need to utilize these tools in order to be able to participate in business at all opened such tools for people who would not have used them under normal conditions. In this article, the results of a recent study are presented, in which the impact of the pandemic on agile working is examined. Based on these results, a scenario of the future of agile working in a post COVID-19 world is derived. The study was conducted as an online survey in Germany. More than 170 people working in different job positions and from different branches and companies participated. The study reveals that the pandemic significantly changed the way of working. However, people value digital tools and were able to find methods of effective and efficient collaboration in distant work environments. © 1973-2011 IEEE.

This keynote speech is to all intents and purposes introducing a new process mining approach and its implemented system, which are named as eXplainable process mining (XPM) approach and system, respectively. Through the XPM approach, we can selectively amalgamate a group of process event log traces, and through the XPM system, we can ultimately discover a series of complete and safe process models from a process enactment event log dataset. The XPM approach is theoretically based on the typical process modeling methodology of structured information control nets (abbreviated as SICN) and its algorithmic functionality is substantiated by the explainable ρ-Algorithm that is extended from the original ρ-Algorithm [6]. This keynote speech is also explicating the proven process mining algorithm that is able to discover the underlying SICN-oriented process model from a dataset of process enactment event logs and histories. More specifically, the concrete goal of this keynote speech is about an explainable way of discovering the complete structural formation of SICN-oriented process model. Assume that the structural formation is made up of an arbitrary number of combinational building blocks of the primitive process patterns such as linear (sequential), disjunctive (exclusive-OR), conjunctive (parallel-AND), and repetitive (iterative-LOOP) process patterns. Conclusively, it would be emphasized that the XPM approach and system ought to be very effective and well-fitted for managing life-cycles of very large-scale process models deployed in process-aware enterprises and organizations. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Traditional process models like Petri nets effectively describe the control flow of processes but fail to capture stochastic information such as choice likelihoods. To address this, Stochastic Labeled Petri Nets (SPNs) have recently gained attention, extending Petri nets with transition weights that allow to associate executions with probabilities. The language of an SPN thereby becomes a probability distribution over traces (i.e., sequences of activities). To assess an SPN’s quality, Earth Mover’s Stochastic Conformance (EMSC) emerged as a natural metric that measures the similarity of the SPN’s trace distribution to the observed real-world distribution. In this paper, we propose a locally optimal approach for fine-tuning (or finding) transitions weights to maximize an SPN’s EMSC. Leveraging the relationship between EMSC and the Wasserstein distance, which recently gained attention as a loss function in machine learning, we compute subgradients for EMSC to optimize transition weights via subgradient descent. Besides, we propose a straightforward solution to handle models that allow for infinitely many traces. Our optimization approach is broadly applicable for EMSC—that is, for EMSC using arbitrary trace-to-trace distances—unlike existing works that either to not explicitly consider EMSC or only special variants. We demonstrate the applicability of our approach on several real-life event logs and discovery algorithms, comparing it to state-of-the-art stochastic process discovery methods and a recent full automated simulation approach.

Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) is an established data transmission protocol in virtually all Smart-∗ domains. The protocol is based on the publish/subscribe pattern. Messages are published to so-called topics, to which subscribers subscribe, in order to receive the content of interest. As the name of the topic can be chosen freely by the publishing entity without relying on a shared semantic model, the subscribers can insufficiently reason on the semantic of the topic name. However, this can be desirable when topic trees closely resemble structures found in the real world. One approach to formulate semantics in a machine-readable format are ontologies. This paper demonstrates how ontologies allow to couple topic trees with explicit semantics. To this end we present a novel editor that supports users in creating topic trees that follow explicit semantics. © 2022 IEEE.

Applications relying on machine learning and statistical learning techniques, such as neural networks, have significantly grown over the past decade. Nevertheless, as these techniques learn only from observational data, they suffer from spurious correlations that may limit their performance in domain shifts. In this paper, we address this issue. We propose an approach that guides neural networks during the training phase using explanations. User-defined causal knowledge is incorporated to guide the considered neural network. Such guidance reduces the risk of spurious correlations, allowing for a focus on the causal structure. Our method extends the feed-forward step of neural networks to track the feature relevance. The resulting feature relevance is accounted for in a regularization term in the loss function. We compare the performance of a conventional neural network with and without the proposed extension. This comparison indicates that the learning process successfully adopts the causal mechanism, while the conventional approach learns based on spurious correlations.

Object-centric process mining provides a set of techniques for the analysis of event data where events are associated to several objects. To store Object-Centric Event Logs (OCELs), the JSON-OCEL and JSON-XML formats have been recently proposed. However, the proposed implementations of the OCEL are file-based. This means that the entire file needs to be parsed in order to apply process mining techniques, such as the discovery of object-centric process models. In this paper, we propose a database storage for the OCEL format using the MongoDB document database. Since documents in MongoDB are equivalent to JSON objects, the current JSON implementation of the standard could be translated straightforwardly in a series of MongoDB collections. TraVaG: Differentially Private Trace Variant Generation Using GANs

process mining is rapidly growing in the industry. Consequently, privacy concerns regarding sensitive and private information included in event data, used by process mining algorithms, are becoming increasingly relevant. State-of-the-art research mainly focuses on providing privacy guarantees, e.g., differential privacy, for trace variants that are used by the main process mining techniques, e.g., process discovery. However, privacy preservation techniques for releasing trace variants still do not fulfill all the requirements of industry-scale usage. Moreover, providing privacy guarantees when there exists a high rate of infrequent trace variants is still a challenge. In this paper, we introduce TraVaG as a new approach for releasing differentially private trace variants based on Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) that provides industry-scale benefits and enhances the level of privacy guarantees when there exists a high ratio of infrequent variants. Moreover, TraVaG overcomes shortcomings of conventional privacy preservation techniques such as bounding the length of variants and introducing fake variants. Experimental results on real-life event data show that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art techniques in terms of privacy guarantees, plain data utility preservation, and result utility preservation. © 2023, CC BY.

Object-Centric Alignments

processes tend to interact with other processes and operate on various objects of different types. These objects can influence each other creating dependencies between sub-processes. Analyzing the conformance of such complex processes challenges traditional conformance-checking approaches because they assume a single-case identifier for a process. To create a single-case identifier one has to flatten complex processes. This leads to information loss when separating the processes that interact on some objects. This paper introduces an alignment approach that operates directly on these object-centric processes. We introduce alignments that can give behavior-based insights into how closely related the event data generated by a process and the behavior specified by an object-centric Petri net are. The contributions of this paper include a definition for object-centric alignments, an algorithm to compute them, a publicly available implementation, and a qualitative and quantitative evaluation. The qualitative evaluation shows that object-centric alignments can give better insights into object-centric processes because they correctly consider inter-object dependencies. Findings from the quantitative evaluation show that the run-time grows exponentially with the number of objects, the length of the process execution, and the cost of the alignment. The evaluation results motivate future research to improve the run-time and make object-centric alignments more applicable for larger processes. © 2023, CC BY.
