Since a decade an extensive research work is being carried out in the field of remote laboratories, which has changed and made the laboratory education system more interesting, cost effective and an efficient usage factor. These labs allow an engineer or a student to practice the experiments they are interested in as many times as they want with a flexibility of place and time. Now we have several remote lab technologies that have evolved, implemented and are working to enhance and simplify the education system of how an engineer/ a student learns his laboratory work. This paper presents a roadmap for universities wanting to deliver engineers with solid documented laboratory experience qualified to design goods and services for a sustainable society. Students need a lot of learning and training covering many aspects of practical engineering and science to become true experimenters. Ubiquitous laboratories with free access and many well-designed experiments are required with the possibility to perform every experiment within the infrastructures 24/7. A challenge is how to make the labs and the collection available for learning and assessment of practical experiments. How should the funding of the laboratories be arranged? Should universities without laboratory resources pay a subscription when using remote laboratories and these databases of experiments at other universities? This paper describes a theme to unite the different resources of remote laboratories which offer the learners/ job seekers the ability to access and use a variety of practical equipments situated in different and distant laboratories through internet without the need to physically moving to these laboratories. In fact this is one of the benefits of using Remote Laboratories.

Due to the large message transmission latency in Distributed Virtual Environments(DVEs) on Wide Area Net-work(WAN), the effectiveness of causality consistency control of message ordering is determined by not only causal order of messages but also the real-timeness. If merely causal order is considered, the real-time property of DVEs may not be ensured because of the unlimited waiting time for the delayed messages. While if only real-timeness is emphasized, there may be too many delayed messages, which have to be discarded, to maintain the quality of causal message ordering. Therefore, a trade-off between the quality of causal order delivery and real-timeness is necessary for DVEs. In this article, a novel causality based message ordering approach is presented. In general, this new approach dynamically balances the demands of causal order delivery and real-timeness. Experiment results demonstrate the approach can enhance the quality of causality, while simultaneously keep the real-time property of DVEs.

User Experience (UX) research focusing on the emotional and experiential aspects of system usage is of highly recognized relevance for the CHI community. A lot of work has been conducted with different goals: investigating a common definition and understanding of UX, creating appropriate concepts, frameworks and models for supporting design and development processes, and developing methods and techniques for evaluating UX. However, there is still a lack of in-depth discussions on the theoretical roots and foundations for all of these UX activities in academia and industry. In this SIG we will explore the state of the art in the theory of UX research in order to lay the fundament for further advancements of the UX field. We will also discuss how the theoretical viewpoints can benefit, and be influenced by the UX practitioners' work.

Strongly promoted by the leading industrial companies, cloud computing becomes increasingly popular in re-cent years. The growth rate of cloud computing surpasses even the most optimistic predictions. A cloud application is a large-scale distributed system that consist a lot of distributed cloud nodes. How to make optimal deployment of cloud applications is a challenging research problem. When deploying a cloud application to the cloud environment, cloud node ranking is one of the most important approaches for selecting optimal cloud nodes for the cloud application. Traditional ranking methods usually rank the cloud nodes based on their QoS values, without considering the communication performance between cloud nodes. However, such kind of node relationship is very important for the communication-intensive cloud applications (e.g., Message Passing Interface (MPI) programs), which have a lot of communications between the selected cloud nodes. In this paper, we propose a novel clustering-based method for selecting optimal cloud nodes for deploying communication-intensive applications to the cloud environment. Our method not only takes into account the cloud node qualities, but also the communication performance between different nodes. We deploy several well-known MPI programs on a real-world cloud and compare our method with other methods. The experimental results show the effectiveness of our cluster-based method.

Support vector machines (SVMs) and related kernel-based algorithms have become one of the most popular approaches for many machine learning problems. but little is known about the structure of their reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (RKHS). In this work, based on Mercer's Theorem, the relation among reproducing kernel (RK) and Mercer kernel, and their roles in SVMs are discussed, corresponding to some important theorems and consequences are given. Furthermore, a novel framework of reproducing kernel support vector machines (RKSVM) is proposed. The simulation results are presented to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed method. Choosing a proper Mercer kernel for different tasks is an important factor for studying the result of the SVMs.

This paper aims to design a wearable terrain recognition system, which might assist the control of powered artificial prosthetic legs. A laser distance sensor and inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors were mounted on human body. These sensors were used to identify the movement state of the user, reconstruct the geometry of the terrain in front of the user while walking, and recognize the type of terrain before the user stepped on it. Different sensor configurations were investigated and compared. The designed system was evaluated on one healthy human subject when walking on an obstacle course in the laboratory environment. The results showed that the reconstructed terrain height demonstrated clearer pattern difference among studied terrains when the laser was placed on the waist than that when the laser was mounted on the shank. The designed system with the laser on the waist accurately recognized 157 out of 160 tested terrain transitions, 300ms-2870ms before the user switched the negotiated terrains. These promising results demonstrated the potential application of the designed terrain recognition system to further improve the control of powered artificial legs.

MicroRNAs can regulate hundreds of target genes and play a pivotal role in a broad range of biological process. However, relatively little is known about how these highly connected miRNAs-target networks are remodelled in the context of various diseases. Here we examine the dynamic alteration of context-specific miRNA regulation to determine whether modified microRNAs regulation on specific biological processes is a useful information source for predicting cancer prognosis. A new concept, Context-specific miRNA activity (CoMi activity) is introduced to describe the statistical difference between the expression level of a miRNA's target genes and non-targets genes within a given gene set (context). The microarray gene expression profile of brain tumors from 356 patients (The Cancer Genome Atlas dataset) was converted into a CoMi activity pattern, and showed significant positive correlation with the corresponding miRNA expression pattern. In a breast cancer cohort, the differential CoMi activity between good prognosis (longer survival) vs. bad prognosis patients forms a scale-free network, which highlighted a group of important cancer-related microRNAs and GO terms, e.g. hsa-miR-34a and 'cell adhesion'. Then two breast cancer cohorts were used in outcome prediction in an independent test. Using a popular T-test feature selection method and a support vector machine (SVM) classifier with 10-fold cross-validation, the CoMi activity feature achieves an area under curve (AUC) of 0.7155, better than the AUC value of 0.6339 for feature selection based on mRNA expression. In an independent test, CoMi feature selection achieved an AUC of 0.6874. Survival analysis also shows signatures defined by CoMi activity was predictive of survival and superior to mRNAs signatures. In short, we have demonstrated the first interrogation of dynamic remodeling of context specific miRNAs regulation networks in cancer. Prediction of the amino acids that have a catalytic effect on the enzymes is a major stage in appointing the activity of the enzymes and classification. The biological activity of a protein usually depends on the existence of a small number of amino acids. Recently, many algorithms have been proposed in the literature for finding these amino acids which are complex and time consuming. In this paper, we will introduce a new method for predicting the active sites that will use the spatial coordinates and the type of amino acids that contain the active sites. In order to increase the speed we use an approximate graph isomorphism algorithm. Furthermore, this algorithm allows us to find several active sites for a protein and order them according to a RMSD (Root Mean Square Deviation) number which has several applications in biology.

Discriminant analysis, especially Fisherface and its numerous variants, have achieved great success in face recognition. However, these methods fail to work for face recognition from Single Sample per Person (SSPP), since they need more than one sample per person to estimate the within-class scatter matrix. To break this inability of traditional discriminant analysis, our paper proposes Adaptive Discriminant Analysis (ADA). In our method, the within-class scatter matrix of each enrolled subject is estimated from his/her single sample, by inferring from a generic training set with multiple samples per person. The inference is inspired by a simple intuition that similar person follows similar within-class variations. Specifically, both kNN regression and Lasso regression are explored for this purpose. We evaluate our method on FERET database and a large real-world face database. The results are very impressive compared with dominant traditional solutions to SSPP problem.

In the past decade there has been a great interest in a synthesis-based model for signals, based on sparse and redundant representations. Such a model assumes that the signal of interest can be composed as a linear combination of few columns from a given matrix (the dictionary). An alternative analysis-based model can be envisioned, where an analysis operator multiplies the signal, leading to a cosparse outcome. In this paper, we consider this analysis model, in the context of a generic missing data problem (e.g., compressed sensing, inpainting, source separation, etc.). Our work proposes a uniqueness result for the solution of this problem, based on properties of the analysis operator and the measurement matrix. This paper also considers two pursuit algorithms for solving the missing data problem, an L1-based and a new greedy method. Our simulations demonstrate the appeal of the analysis model, and the success of the pursuit techniques presented.
