Distributed Virtual Environment (DVE) systems have become more and more important both in academic communities and the industries. To guarantee the load constrain, the physical world integrity and the virtual world integrity, the virtual environment should be divided into several parts and mapped to multiple servers, which are located in geographically different places. Many centralized algorithms based on regular cutting method are proposed to solve this problem. However, the dynamic property of clients and distributed property of the system make the existing algorithms unable to undertake it. In this paper, we propose a metric to measure the cutting quality and design a distributed mapping algorithm based on an irregular cutting. Simulation results show that our algorithm greatly decreases the costs of DVE systems for migration of clients and effectively improves the satisfaction degree of users.

Performance of wavelet thresholding methods for speech enhancement is dependent on estimating an exact threshold value in the wavelet sub-bands. In this paper, we propose a new method for more exact estimating the threshold value. We proposed to determine the threshold value based on the symmetric Kullback-Leibler divergence between the probability distributions of noisy speech and noise wavelet coefficients. In the next step, we improved this value using segmental SNR. We used some of TIMIT utterances to assess the performance of the proposed threshold. The algorithm is evaluated using the PESQ score and the SNR improvement. In average, we obtain 2db SNR improvement and a PESQ score increase up to 0.7 in comparison to the conventional wavelet thresholding approaches.

A Hohlraum-like configuration is proposed for realizing a simple compact source for neutrons. A laser pulse enters a tiny thin-shelled hollow-sphere target through a small opening and is self-consistently trapped in the cavity. The electrons in the inner shell-wall region are expelled by the light pressure. The resulting space-charge field compresses the local ions into a thin layer that becomes strongly heated. An inward expansion of ions into the shell cavity then occurs, resulting in the formation at the cavity center of a hot spot of ions at high density and temperature, similar to that in inertial electrostatic confinement.

Faced with the general trend of centralization of information, the biggest challenge to enterprise is how to ensure that all fixed computers and different mobile devices anywhere can access securely and quickly enterprise's businesses. To solve this problem, an Ontology-based Secure intranet/Internet Access Platform (OSAP) is presented. Ontology has been applied to the field of software resources sharing. Software resource ontology is defined for building the foundation of Software Resource Ontology Sharing Model (SROSM) and the OSAP. The OSAP framework is presented by semantic modeling based on SROSM for providing users with better and higher QOS in sharing software resources. The OSAP is designed with OSAP Portal, Connection Module, Session Management Module, Security Module, RDP Module, and Bitmap Caching Module. The design ideas and functionalities of all modules are introduced. Based on the open Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), the OSAP prototype is realized and key technologies including client display, data compression and security are described. To guarantee data transmission security and avoid access problem due to the firewall obstructing port 3389, the SSL protocol is employed to encapsulate RDP data packages between clients and OSAP as the RDP is used between OSAP and Terminal Services servers. Experimental results demonstrate that the OSAP has better performance involving response time, network usage, RAM usage and CPU usage. © 2009 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

Multiword expressions (MWEs) have been proved useful for many natural language processing tasks. However, how to use them to improve performance of statistical machine translation (SMT) is not well studied. This paper presents a simple yet effective strategy to extract domain bilingual multiword expressions. In addition, we implement three methods to integrate bilingual MWEs to Moses, the state-of-the-art phrase-based machine translation system. Experiments show that bilingual MWEs could improve translation performance significantly. © 2009 ACL and AFNLP

The purpose of this study is to present a new method, independent vector analysis (IVA), by extending independent component analysis (ICA) of univariate source signals to multivariate source signals on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). IVA is utilized to relief the limitation of the conventional ICA approach. The proposed method can resolve the permutation problem during individual ICA runs for group brain MR images. The proposed IVA method in conjunction with support vector machine (SVM), we can effectively separate the different part of gray, white matter and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from brain soft tissues. In order to demonstrate the proposed IVA-SVM method, experiments are conducted for performance analysis and evaluation. Simulation results show that using IVA can greatly release from the problem cause from traditional ICA to the situation of analyzing inconsistent results of MR image. © 2009 IEEE.

Strong negative association rules can reveal irrelevances hidden between frequent itemsets. Existing research has made significant efforts in discovering both positive and negative association rules from single database. This paper presents an efficient method for mining strong negative association rules in multi-database. The method produces some strong negative relational patterns (a kind of infrequent itemsets) by pruning and scanning constructed multi-database frequent pattern tree, and extracts strong negative association rules according to the proposed correlation model. The experimental results show the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

In distributed virtual environment (DVE) systems, a distributed server infrastructure is often used to reduce the latency between servers and clients. Under this infrastructure, mapping clients to proper servers is one of the key issues for improving the interactivity and overall performance. Most traditional methods of mapping the clients to servers only consider the load balancing problem. However, there are two other important aspects that should be involved: the physical world integrity and the virtual world integrity. In this work, we propose a novel mapping algorithm which takes care of all three aspects at the same time. The algorithm converts the mapping problem into cutting stage and matching stage to get optimal result with polynomial complexity. The experimental results show that our algorithm improves the overall performance of DVE systems significantly.

Trapping in scale-free networks with hierarchical organization of modularity

A wide variety of real-life networks share two remarkable generic topological properties: scale-free behavior and modular organization, and it is natural and important to study how these two features affect the dynamical processes taking place on such networks. In this paper, we investigate a simple stochastic process—trapping problem, a random walk with a perfect trap fixed at a given location, performed on a family of hierarchical networks that exhibit simultaneously striking scale-free and modular structure. We focus on a particular case with the immobile trap positioned at the hub node having the largest degree. Using a method based on generating functions, we determine explicitly the mean first-passage time (MFPT) for the trapping problem, which is the mean of the node-to-trap first-passage time over the entire network. The exact expression for the MFPT is calculated through the recurrence relations derived from the special construction of the hierarchical networks. The obtained rigorous formula corroborated by extensive direct numerical calculations exhibits that the MFPT grows algebraically with the network order. Concretely, the MFPT increases as a power-law function of the number of nodes with the exponent much less than 1. We demonstrate that the hierarchical networks under consideration have more efficient structure for transport by diffusion in contrast with other analytically soluble media including some previously studied scale-free networks. We argue that the scale-free and modular topologies are responsible for the high efficiency of the trapping process on the hierarchical networks.

Knee-related injuries including meniscal tears are common in both young athletes and the aging population, and require accurate diagnosis and surgical intervention when appropriate. With proper techniques and radiologists' experienced skills, confidence in detection of meniscal tears can be quite high. This paper develops a novel computer-aided detection (CAD) diagnostic system for automatic detection of meniscal tears in the knee. Evaluation of this CAD system using an archived database of images from 40 individuals with suspected knee injuries indicates that the sensitivity and specificity of the proposed CAD system are 83.87% and 75.19%, respectively, compared to the mean sensitivity and specificity of 77.41% and 81.39%, respectively, obtained by experienced radiologists in routine diagnosis without using the CAD. The experimental results suggest that the developed CAD system has great potential and promise in automatic detection of both simple and complex meniscal tears of the knee. © 2009 IEEE.
