This paper expands the use of analogies in thermo-dynamics to explore concepts in the characterization of information systems. The focus is on systems of liquid-liquid equilibrium and how they are similar to information-systems integration. New ideas, such as metrics, are introduced for tractability and disjunction in information-systems integration. It describes the role of ontology and suggests directions for future research in this area. This paper is the third in a series of papers in the newly emerging and interdisciplinary field of "infodynamics." © 2005 IEEE.

This paper presents an approach to Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) through software intelligent retrieval and reuse. OO development never has met the objectives for software reuse. Thus, a Uniform Modeling Language (UML) has arisen as a standard top-down way for describing component functions and properties. Components may be defined in any language, for any platform, and combined into frameworks. This can be accomplished using component models. Component interface standards should be developed to facilitate component reuse. Retrieved components need to be adapted (e.g., via Case-Based Reasoning) to specific contexts. This is more general than OO development. Knowledge-bases should evolve to guide the definition, generalization, specialization, and retrieval of components and frameworks. These intelligent systems will be constructed through a component-based methodology - completing the loop. The problem with a UML-based methodology is that it is not a full-spectrum coding method. Thus, a component bootstrap is advanced, which in conjunction with an intelligent repository, provides for extensible frameworks. © 2005 IEEE.

Granular theorem of quotient space in image segmentation

Based on the quotient space granular theorem, the image segmentation concept is analyzed and the image segmentation methods are studied, and then the quotient space granular theorem of image segmentation is demonstrated. The image segmentation problems are described with triple elements function of the quotient space model (X,f,Γ)⇔([X],[f],[Γ]), according to the quotient space granularity computing, the image segmentation theorem is presented. The methods of images segmentation based on hierarchical and synthesis and combinational technique are exploited and then the segmentation algorithm based granularity synthesis technique is proposed. In this technique, the features of directionality and roughness in texture images data set are firstly extracted respectively to form the different granularities of image, then the different granularity are synthesized according to the theorem of granularity synthesis, finally the texture images is segmented. The experimental results demonstrate that the algorithm is valid for the segmentation of complicated texture images.

This international effort was initiated to address the challenges that our ever-changing environment places on various protected steel structures due to acid corrosion. A variety of hotdip galvanized steel samples were fabricated in Japan and tested in both strong and weak acid rain conditions, using a rotating wheel and dip tank in the environmental aging laboratory at Clarkson University in the U.S. The experimental results provide useful information about the effect of acid rain on the service life of structural materials being used throughout the world.

In this paper, we explore the interdependent roles of computational intelligence, data mining, and machine learning. We explain how these three seemingly independent AI specialties are inextricably linked through the science of randomization and reuse. Computational intelligence is shown to imply soft computing, whose bounds are soft or fuzzy only because they need be adoptively formed (e.g., Type II fuzzy logic). Data mining implies the compression of data (including anomalous data) to its simplest form. Such randomization operations are inherently incomplete and thus are necessarily domain-specific or adaptive as a consequence. Finally, machine learning is the study of computational adaptation. For example, a machine that plays master-level chess is not necessarily computationally intelligent - unless it is capable of adaptive improvement in its play. This paper will attempt to make it clear that intelligence and the capability for learning are in fact synonyms for an AI. © 2005 IEEE.

Grid computing presents a new trend to distributed computation and Internet applications, which can construct a virtual single image of heterogeneous resources, provide uniform application interface and integrate widespread computational resources into super, ubiquitous and transparent aggregation. In the adoption of Grid computing, China, who is facing more resource heterogeneity and other specific demands, has put much effort on both research and practical utilization. In this paper, we introduce the major China Grid research projects and their perspective applications. First we give the overview of the four government-sponsored programs in Grid, namely the China National Grid, ChinaGrid, NSFC Grid, and ShanghaiGrid. Then we present six representative ongoing Grid systems in details, which are categorized into Grid middleware and Grid application. This paper provides the general picture of Grid computing in China, and shows the great efforts, devotion and confidence in China to use Grid technology to boost the society, economics and scientific research. © Springer 2004.

An automated seamless mosaicing system of multi-charge coupled devices of panchromatic data

Panchromatic data of pixel resolution 5.8 m obtained from IRS-IC and IRS-ID satellites proved to be very useful for mapping purposes. One of the popular data product is the 70 km swath mosaic which is covered by a combination of 3 CCD line sensors, each with 4096 pixels. Each CCD-line sensor with different imaging times causes geometric problems of mosaicing three strips data together. In this paper, we propose the details of the design elements of system that caters to the need for accurate and automatic multi strip image registration without any second resampling of the data. The systematic geometric correction grid mapping is improved to facilitate accurate mosaicing by automatic image registration task that makes use of the overlap data within image strips and image registration is achieved up to sub-pixel level.

The cook projection index estimation using the wavelet kernel function

The key procedure of exploratory projection pursuit is to optimize a criterion function, which is called the projection pursuit index. The cook family index estimated by the wavelet kernel function is given in this paper. And the asymptotic unbiasedness and the convergence property of the projection index are proved. Also, as the fast computing of this kind projection index, it is suited for the processing of a large data. Some results of projection index based on the wavelet kernel estimation are compared with that of the Gauss kernel estimation. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

We present a framework to specify and evaluate the coordinations in MAS. The framework draws on a MAS logic incorporating a number of temporal and dynamic operators, and has some important characteristics such as high-level, abstract, complete, and general-purpose. Based on the framework, the request/service cooperation models are studied and analyzed.

A study by a ITiCSE 2001 working group ("the McCracken Group") established that many students do not know how to program at the conclusion of their introductory courses. A popular explanation for this incapacity is that the students lack the ability to problem-solve. That is, they lack the ability to take a problem description, decompose it into sub-problems and implement them, then assemble the pieces into a complete solution. An alternative explanation is that many students have a fragile grasp of both basic programming principles and the ability to systematically carry out routine programming tasks, such as tracing (or "desk checking") through code. This ITiCSE 2004 working group studied the alternative explanation, by testing students from seven countries, in two ways. First, students were tested on their ability to predict the outcome of executing a short piece of code. Second, students were tested on their ability, when given the desired function of short piece of near-complete code, to select the correct completion of the code from a small set of possibilities. Many students were weak at these tasks, especially the latter task, suggesting that such students have a fragile grasp of skills that are a prerequisite for problem-solving.
