The CAPSE environment for computer Aided Parallel Software Engineering is intended to assist the developer in the crucial task of parallel programming. The methodology of CAPSE is based on direct manipulative graphical creation and editing of scalable workload characterizations of MIMD algorithms. This paper presents the basic concepts of this methodology and an example of a parallel Poisson solver. The workload characterization representing the computation and communication behavior of the algorithm is based on directed acyclic task graphs, which achieve scalability by composing the task graph of scalable basic patterns instead of single node and arcs. The composition and the usage of these basic patterns is described in the light of designing the Poisson solver algorithm. The resulting task graph is used to predict the program's performance on a nCUBE 2 distributed memory machine and the PAPS simulator.

Software testing generally proceeds as follows: generating test-cases, selecting test-data, executing a test target program, inspecting execution result and evaluating whether testing has already been sufficient or not yet. As for methods for structural testing of programs, the way using a coverage, where the coverage means what extent given testing criteria are satisfied, is noted. At the evaluating step, whether or not we finish the testing is determined in view of the coverage. This paper proposes a method for structural testing of concurrent programs written in Ada programming language, especially, test-case generation and execution of the programs. The Event InterActions Graph (EIAG) is used as a model for concurrent programs. The EIAG consists of Event Graphs and Interactions. An Event Graph is a control flow graph of a program unit in a concurrent program. The Interactions represent interactions between the program units. Program units are such as procedures, functions and task-types. After generating test-cases on the EIAG, a method for selecting test-data is described and measures to cope with infeasible test-cases with which are generated in this step is clarified. And a forced execution of a test target concurrent program in order to solve the nondeterministic execution is investigated. The nondeterministic execution is characteristic of concurrent programs.

Subliminal channels are closely related to covert channelsand are used to hide secret information. They abuse the communications resource. Subliminal channels can be introduced in many cryptographicsystems, and exploit the inherent randomness of the systems. For example, secret information can be hidden in the randomness of the authenticators of an authentication system. Similarly secret information can be hidden in the randomness (of the prover or verifier) of both zeroknowledge proof systems and signature systems. To establish a subliminal channel the cryptosystem is abused, that is, used in a different way and for a different purpose than intended by its designer. A particularly obnoxious type of subliminal channel may be activated by abortive halting. For state-of-the-art security, it may be desirable to detect, and if possible prevent, subliminal channels. In this paper we address the problem of whether it is possible to develop (and if so, how) appropriate techniquesfor detecting or preventing the use of such channels. Several such techniques have already been proposed in the literature, and are suitable for many systems. We review these. We also consider recent developments, in particular with regards to the formal security requirements and their impact on research. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1996.

In an attempt to propose a robust method for understanding natural language (NL) interface commands, a scheme is proposed that infers intentions from an indirect speech-act that does not express users' real intentions explicitly. This method classifies the real intentions of the indirect speech-act into: 1) refusal;2) reversal;3) restriction;4) benefit;and 5) disability. Further, concepts are abstracted for operations, e.g., displaying, moving, and deleting information systems;and constructing the operation knowledge base. This knowledge based comprises operational concepts and the relationships between them. These relationships are assigned the foregoing classifications for intentions. In addition, we construct the knowledge base of objects for the target of operations, e.g., files, figures, strings. This knowledge base contains the relationships: a) antonym;b) exclusive;c) part-of, between the objects;and uses these relations to infer the transitions between the objects. An algorithm is the proposed to infer concepts for operations and concepts for target objects of operations that may represent the user's actual intentions. This proposal scheme was tested with requests on UNIX and a commercially available Japanese Word Processor. The system successfully inferred the intentions for approximately 80 percent of the user's indirect speech-act.

HM-card: a new hypermedia authoring system

HM-Card is a novel hypermedia authoring and presentation system for the development and use of a diverse range of hypermedia applications on PCs/MS-Windows. It is the first tool to implement the HM data model, a recent approach to provide a sound theoretical basis for the sophisticated structuring and navigating of hypermedia databases. However, in this paper we only cover the HM data model as the underlying theoretical foundation for the actual authoring system HM-Card. HM-Card offers an extensive set of functional and structural authoring elements, such as animations, question/answer dialogs, transparent import of external documents, and execution of other MS-Windows applications. The user-interface of HM-Card is intended to support rapid prototyping and authoring of complex hypermedia applications. Finished HM-Card applications can be run as stand-alone systems, used in MS-Windows' OLE (Object Linking and Embedding concept) clients, as well as be integrated as modules into large-scale distributed hypermedia systems.

A form evaluation system for brush-written Chinese characters is *** knowledge used in the system is represented in the form of ruleswith the help of a data structure proposed in this paper. Reflecting the spe-cific hierarchical relations among radicals and strokes of Chinese characters,the proposed data structure is based upon a character model that can generatebrush-written Chinese characters on a computer. Through evaluation experi-ments using the developed system, it is shown that representation of calligraphicknowledge and form evaluation of Chinese characters can be smoothly realizedif the data structure is utilized.

GAP CONTROL IN THE FABRICATION OF QUANTUM-EFFECT DEVICES USING X-RAY NANOLITHOGRAPHY

We report on recent advances in the fabrication of quantum-effect devices using x-ray nanolithography. A novel scheme for gap control during the mask replication process was developed that uses capacitance sensing in a feedback loop. The capacitance between two masks is measured and held constant through control of the pressure between them. This scheme can be used to maintain the masks at a gap as small as 1 mum, thus reducing penumbra and diffraction. This capacitive feedback method, used in mask-to-mask replication can, in principle, also be used for mask-to-substrate exposures and is thus an additional element in an x-ray nanolithography technology for sub-70 nm features.

This paper compares the multilayer perceptron (MLP) networks and the radial basis function (RBF) networks in the task of handwritten Hindi character recognition (HCR). The error backpropagation algorithm was used to train the MLP networks. An automatic HCR system using MLP and RBF networks is presented. The experiments were carried out on two hundred forty five samples of five writers. The results showed that the MLP networks trained by the error backpropagation algorithm were superior in recognition accuracy and memory usage. However, they suffered from long training time than that of RBF networks.

Because of its capability of high-speed search, the associative memory (CAM) is expected to be used in a variety of information processing systems. In this paper, novel fault-tolerant techniques which are effective for on-line use are proposed for TLB which is an example of the application of CAM. First, fault and error models of the TLB consisting of the CAM part and the SRAM part are clarified. Then, the fault-tolerant techniques for these faults and errors, such as distance separable technique, cod-ing technique, simplified 1-out-of-n check and graceful degradation, are proposed. The distance separable technique which encodes the data stored in the CAM part is the one which masks the faulty CAM part and prevents errors from propagating to the subsequent circuits. The coding technique checks the one-to-one correspondence between the data in the CAM and those in SRAM by using the SEC-DED code with byte error detection capability, i.e., SEC-DED-SbED code, and at the same time it detects and corrects errors in the data stored in SRAM. The simplified 1-out-of-n check processes association errors. The graceful degradation gives a flag in the faulty memory section and prevents it from being used. The methods proposed in this paper are evaluated from area augmentation and error detection capability perspectives. The results show that the fault-tolerant TLB with 32 virtual address bits, 32 physical address bits and 128 entries gives single fault detection probability of nearly 99 percent with 28 percent area increase.

In the present paper, a fuzzy logic based ultrasonic motor (USM) is used in order to properly control the speed and phase difference for the elasticity and viscosity of a robot joint. The traveling wave USM is driven by two-phase sine wave signals, and the phase difference of the signals is usually selected to +90/spl deg/ and -90/spl deg/ meaning high speed and maximum torque of the USM. In this paper, we describe USM rotational speed characteristics at no load. The first phase difference is adjusted in the range from +90/spl deg/ to -90/spl deg/ by fuzzy controller as is the reached target speed.
