The authors review the CELP (code excited linear prediction) coding algorithm, and the efforts recently made for improving the performance and reducing the complexity. The efforts for improving the coding performance have been aimed not only at making the quality better, but also at further reducing the bit rate without degrading the quality. A sparse-delta codebook is introduced as an example of a codebook with a computationally efficient structure. Multimode coding is then described for improving the perceptual quality of CELP at low bit rates.< >

The power of constant depth circuits with sigmoid (i.e., smooth) threshold gates for computing Boolean functions is examined. It is shown that, for depth 2, constant size circuits of this type are strictly more powerful than constant size Boolean threshold circuits (i.e., circuits with Boolean threshold gates). On the other hand it turns out that, for any constant depth d, polynomial size sigmoid threshold circuits with polynomially bounded weights compute exactly the same Boolean functions as the corresponding circuits with Boolean threshold gates.< >

Dynamic analysis of waveguide structures containing dielectric and metal strips is presented. The analysis utilizes a finite difference frequency domain procedure to reduce the problem to a symmetric matrix eigenvalue problem. Since the matrix is also sparse, the eigenvalue problem can be solved quickly and efficiently using the conjugate gradient method resulting in considerable savings in computer storage and time. Comparison is made with the analytical solution for the loaded dielectric waveguide case. For the microstrip case, we get both waveguide modes and quasi-TEM modes. The quasi-TEM modes in the limit of zero frequency are checked with the static analysis which also uses finite difference. Some of the quasi-TEM modes are spurious. This article describes their origin and discusses how to eliminate them. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the principles.

The lowest layer, the Object Management System (OMS), is based on the Entity-Relationship model and includes those basic operations related to the storage and access of design data objects that are common to all applications. The database is divided into workspaces, which are collections of OMS objects and relationships organized according to an application-dependent schema and forming a significant whole (e.g., a design project) from the user's point of view Workspace is also the unit for locking and access *** object is a collection of attributes. A discussion is presented of the relationship between two solid representation schemes: constructive solid geometry (CSG trees) and recursive spatial subdivision exemplified by the bintree, a generalization of the quadtree and octree. Detailed algorithms are developed and analyzed for evaluating CSG trees by bintree conversion, i.e., by determining explicitly which parts of space are solid and which empty. These techniques enable the addition of the time dimension and motion to the approximate analysis of CSG trees in a simple manner to solve problems such as dynamic interference detection. For "well-behaved" CSG trees, the execution time of the conversion algorithm is directly related to the spatial complexity of the object represented by the CSG tree (i.e., asymptotically it is proportional to the number of bintree nodes as the resolution increases). The set of well-behaved CSG trees includes all trees that define multidimensional polyhedra in a manner that does not give rise to tangential intersections at CSG tree nodes.

We present an algorithm for converting from the boundary representation of a solid to the corresponding octree model. The algorithm utilizes an efficient new connected components labeling technique. A novelty of the method is the demonstration that all processing can be performed directly on linear quad and octree encodings. We illustrate the use of the algorithm by an application to geometric mine modeling and verify its performance by analysis and practical experiments.
