In conventional image matching methods, the image matching process is mostly based on image statistic information. One aspect neglected by all these methods is that there is much fuzzy information contained in these images. A new fuzzy matching algorithm based on fuzzy similarity for navigation is presented in this paper. Because the fuzzy theory is of the ability of making good description of the fuzzy information contained in images, the image matching method based on fuzzy similarity would look forward to producing good performance results. Experimental results using matching algorithm based on fuzzy information also demonstrate its reliability and practicability.

An Adaptive Regulation Problem and Its Application

This paper studies an adaptive regulation problem for the modified FitzHugh-Nagumo neuron model under external electrical stimulation. We first present the solution of the global robust output regulation problem for output feedback system with an uncertain exosystem which models the external electrical stimulation with unknown frequency and amplitude. Then, we show that the robust control problem for the modified FitzHugh-Nagumo neuron model can be formulated as the global robust output regulation problem and the solvability conditions for the output regulation problem for the modified FitzHugh-Nagumo neuron model are all satisfied. Then, we apply the obtained output regulation result to constructing an output feedback control law for the modified FitzHugh-Nagumo neuron model to achieve global stability of the closed-loop system in the presence of uncertain parameters and external stimulus. An example is given to show that the proposed algorithm can completely reject the external electrical stimulation.

Relationships between Pitzer's ion interaction coefficients and ionic parameters of electrolyte solutions

pattern recognition methods were used to treat the experimentally measured data of Pitzer’s coefficients of 107 electrolytes, to find the relationships between the ionic structural parameters of these electrolytes and Pitzer’s coefficients. It is found that these relationships can be approximately expressed as linear equations of four dimensionless numbers, (R_+/R_-), (R_++R_-)/Z_+Z_-, (Z_+/Z_-) and (R_t/R_l), where R_+ and R_- are the cationic and anionic radii respectively; Z_+ and Z_- are the cationic and anionic charge numbers respectively, and (R_t/R_l) denotes the nonsphericity of some non-spherical ions. Besides, it is found that the difference of the nuclear magnetic resonance measured rotational relaxation time of water molecules around cations and anions, |Δτ|, has good correlation with Pitzer’s coefficients. The relationships can be interpreted by the theory of corresponding states of ionic solutions. Based on the relationships, an example of application to some hydrometallurgical process was discussed.

A considerable amount of research work has been done for texture classification using local or global feature extraction methods. Inspired by Weber's Law, a simple and robust Weber Local Descriptor (WLD) is a recently developed for local feature extraction. This WLD method did not consider the contrast information. In order to improve texture classification accuracy, we propose a hybrid approach that combines the WLD with contrast information in this paper. It utilizes the histogram of two complementary features WLD and the image variance calculated with the Probability Weighted Moments. Support vector machine is used for classification. The comparison of the proposed method with state of art methods like local binary pattern and WLD is experimental investigated on two publically available dataset, named as Brodatz and KTH-TIPS2-a. Results show that our proposed method outperforms over the state of art methods for texture classification. © 2012 IEEE.

A novel image registration scheme is proposed. In the proposed scheme, the complete isometric mapping (Isomap) is used to extract features from the image sets, and these features are input vectors of feedforward neural networks. Neural network outputs are those translation, rotation and scaling parameters with respect to reference and observed image sets. Comparative experiments for Isomap based method, the discrete cosine transform (DCT) and Zernike moment are performed. The results show that the proposed scheme is not only accurate but also remarkably robust to noise. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

Text segmentation using gabor filters for automatic document processing

There is a considerable interest in designing automatic systems that will scan a given paper document and store it on electronic media for easier storage, manipulation, and access. Most documents contain graphics and images in addition to text. Thus, the document image has to be segmented to identify the text regions, so that OCR techniques may be applied only to those regions. In this paper, we present a simple method for document image segmentation in which text regions in a given document image are automatically identified. The proposed segmentation method for document images is based on a multichannel filtering approach to texture segmentation. The text in the document is considered as a textured region. Nontext contents in the document, such as blank spaces, graphics, and pictures, are considered as regions with different textures. Thus, the problem of segmenting document images into text and nontext regions can be posed as a texture segmentation problem. Two-dimensional Gabor filters are used to extract texture features for each of these regions. These filters have been extensively used earlier for a variety of texture segmentation tasks. Here we apply the same filters to the document image segmentation problem. Our segmentation method does not assume any a priori knowledge about the content or font styles of the document, and is shown to work even for skewed images and handwritten text. Results of the proposed segmentation method are presented for several test images which demonstrate the robustness of this technique. © 1992 Springer-Verlag New York Inc.

The photon mapping is one of the more widely used algorithms for rendering scenes with participating media. Currently, it suffers from two main problems: one is how to improve the rendering efficiency, and another is how to reduce large memory requirement to store the photons. In this paper, we propose a hardware-accelerated algorithm that is based on radial basis function model for rendering participating media with multiple scattering. The radial basis function model is used to describe the photon distribution in participating media, and the main purpose is to provide high reconstruction quality using a relatively low number of basis function terms. Consequently, it can result in faster rendering. The radiance estimation is designed according to the radial basis function model. The implementation demonstrates that proposed method is the attractive low memory representation and it is capable of fully simulating the scattering of participating media with interactive feedback to the user. © 2013 ACM.

Local intensity order pattern feature descriptor is proposed to extract the feature of image recently. However, it did not provide the global information of an image. In this paper, a simple, efficient and robust feature descriptor is presented, which is realized by adding the global information to local intensity features. A descriptor, which utilizes local intensity order pattern and/or global matching, is proposed to gather the global information with local intensity order. Experimental results shows that the proposed hybrid approach outperform over the state-of-the art feature extraction method like scale-invariant feature transform, local intensity order pattern and DAISY for standard oxford dataset. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

A novel image registration scheme is proposed. In the proposed scheme, two-dimensional principal component analysis (2DPCA) combined with principal component analysis (PCA) is used to extract features from the image sets and these features are fed into feedforward neural networks to provide translation, rotation and scaling parameters. Comparison experiments between 2DPCA combined with PCA based method and the other two former methods: discrete cosine transform (DCT) and Zernike moment, are performed. The results indicate that the proposed scheme is both accurate and remarkably robust to noise. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.
