Considering that technical skill is the major determinant characteristic of success among competitive swimmers, it is important to coaches to quantify the differences that make one swimmer more efficient than another. One of the most important grants in swimming is the velocity, which can be related to drag forces and provide substantial information about the swimmer technique. The main purpose of this study was to determine the best model to compare swimmers in terms of velocity. In this work, a Radial Basis Function Neural Network (RBF-NN) was used to model the nonlinearity of swim velocity time series. The RBF-NN parameters were adjusted by using four multiobjective optimization methods. The best results in terms of RBF-NN configuration were obtained by the Differential Evolution based algorithms.

A RSSI-based localization syst.m on a home wireless sensor network is proposed in this work. In order to support a robot assistant in pick-and-place tasks, our current syst.m is capable of estimating the localization of an object using the signal streng.h received by a mobile device in a ZigBee sensor network. Two models were utilized (a) log-distance path loss - model in which signal lost has a random influence with log-normal distribution, and (b) free space decay law - based on the decay law for a signal on an open space. RSSI measurements were done in laboratory for applying the estimation method. Moreover experiments with satisfactory results were done with a public dataset to benchmark our results.

This paper deals with the mixed H2/H∞ control problem for uncertain continuous-time linear syst.ms. The polytopic parametric uncertainties are studied. Based on Genetic Algorithms (GAs) and linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), a hybrid algorithm is presented for numerical computation of an optimal fixed-order static or dynamic output feedback robust controller. The genetic algorithm is used to obtain the population of controllers and the LMI based routines are used to minimize some performance criterion. The problem is formulated in terms of different Lyapunov functions. This approach can be used for synthesis of reduced or full-order controllers. Some examples borrowed from the literature are discussed to illustrate and validate this approach.

This paper presents an extended simulation study on the impacts on the response time of Interconnection Network (ICN) in complex On-Line Transaction Processing (OLTP) syst.ms. The workload is TPC-C, a more realistic commercial benchmark. In addition to the simulation results with the ICN that employs CSMA/CD protocol, we find similar anomalous cases where with the ICN of FDDI network, increasing the number of database servers degrad.s the performance of the whole syst.m. We discuss the differences between using an FDDI network and using a FastEthernet hub, in which CSMA/CD protocol is employed. The simulation results give support to the explanations that we have made before.

One of the phenomena that affect the water loss in newborn infants is the humidity. The evaporation is determined by the vapour partial pressure. As well as temperature control, the reduction of the vapour partial pressure oscillations has an important role in the establishment of thermal comfort for newborn infants in incubators. This work presents an algorithm based on multiple models to water vapour partial pressure control. The tests have been made in an acrylic prototype simulating a commercial incubator. The results shows that the implemented control algorithm presents oscillations minor to ±0.08 kPa.

A recent approach was given about the mistakes made mainly by the companies based on the Internet, well known as dotcoms, before the crash of NASDAQ in 2000. It was searched to trace a parallel among the mistakes made by these companies thanks to inefficiency of its business plans, also identifying their flaws, suggesting a reflection for entrepreneurs and futures managers, who see in the Business Plan development a way to enlarge its business and attract investors, as weel through electronic means as for conventional means.

This paper presents a research project being developed at the Industrial and syst.ms eng.neering grad.ate program at the Catholic University of Paraná (Brazil). The objective is to develop a syst.m to aid professionals from management and logistics areas to evaluate the performance of supply chains through computer simulation. Among the several possibilities for analysis, simulation can allow one to perform detailed studies on the bullwhip effect in supply chains, caused by the demand variation from the point-of-sale to the suppliers. Two performance measures are of particular interest: average inventory level and service level, both for each stage at and for the whole supply chain. The structure considered in this project is the traditional supply chain composed by suppliers, manufactures, distributors (or wholesalers), retailers and customers. A first version of the proposed Arena simulation models is under development and is presented in this paper.
