The white-rot basidiomycete Coriolus versicolor secretes several enzymes that participate in the degrad.tion of lignin and various persistent organic pollutants. In this study, we attempted to establish a genetic transformation syst.m with a homogenous promoter sequence for driving the gene for antibiotic resistance. We succeeded in cloning the promoter sequence of the gene for glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (gpd), which is expressed at high levels in C. versicolor. The expression vector pT7GPTHPT was constructed, which included a gene for resistance to hygromycin B under control of the gpd promoter. The successful selection of transformants on medium that contained hygromycin B indicated that the syst.m should be useful not only for the genetic transformation of C. versicolor, but also for the overprod.ction of useful fungal enzymes such as laccase and peroxidase.

Polymer nanocomposites are defined as polymers in which small amounts of nanometer size fillers are homogeneously dispersed by only several weight percentages. Addition of just a few weight percent of the nano-fillers has profound impact on the physical, chemical, mechanical and electrical properties of polymers. Such change is often favorable for eng.neering purpose. This nanocomposite technology has emerged from the field of eng.neering plastics, and potentially expanded its application to structural materials, coatings, and packaging to medical/biomedical prod.cts, and electronic and photonic devices. Recently these 'hi-tech' materials with excellent properties have begun to attract research people in the field of dielectrics and electrical insulation. Since new properties are brought about from the interactions of nanofillers with polymer matrices, mesoscopic properties are expected to come out, which would be interesting to both scientists and eng.neers. Improved characteristics are expected as dielectrics and electrical insulation. Several interesting results to indicate foreseeable future have been revealed, some of which are described on materials and processing in the paper together with basic concepts and future direction.

Partial discharge (PD) degrad.tion of polyamide both without nanoscale fillers (nanofillers) and with 2,4 and 5 wt% additions of nanofillers was investigated. Such materials were subjected to PDs using the IEC (b) electrodes for evaluation. Comparisons were made as to the surface roughness observed by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. It was found that the change in the surface roughness is far smaller in specimens with nanofillers than those without nanofillers, and that the 2 wt% addition is sufficient for improvement of the surface roughness. Furthermore, it was elucidated that the difference of surface roughness of the degrad.d area due to PDs among the specimens originates from the difference in their crystalline structures. These results indicate that polyamide nanocomposite is more resistance to PDs than polyamide without nanofillers.

The classical approaches to teach the control syst.ms present drawbacks, such as: (i) the general overview of the problem is sometimes underemphasized by the knowledge acquisition;(ii) they mainly use the academic examples that are only dealing with simple concepts and problems;(iii) laboratory experiments are either simple or under developed. Design aspects of control syst.ms when applied to practical processes are important to improve the knowledge of the students and to motivate the utilization of modern methodologies as an emergent technology for the applications in industry. In this work, we point out some important aspects for conceiving a new educational prod.ct. We describe our experiences in creating a didactic environment for teaching and learning the control theories in eng.neering courses based on CACSD (Computer Aided Control syst.m Design) and its extension to the research field of industrial problems. Two distinct proposals arise from these experiences for reducing the gap between the theoretical and practical classes, and for teaching the control syst.ms development cycle using mathematical tools and real plants under the virtual instrumentation concept.

This paper presents a constructive neural network with sigmoidal units and multiplication units, which can uniformly approximate any continuous function on a compact set in multi-dimensional input space. This network provides a more efficient and regular architecture compared to existing higher-order feedforward networks while maintaining their fast learning property. Proposed network provides a natural mechanism for incremental network growth. Simulation results on function approximation problem are given to highlight the capability of the proposed network. In particular, self-organizing process with RasID learning algorithm developed for the network is shown to yield smooth generation and steady learning.

This paper describes the application of Universal Learning Networks (ULNs) to the speed control of a separately excited dc motor drives fed from Photovoltaic (PV) generators via dc-dc buck-boost converters. In this application, two ULNs are used: the first is the Universal Learning Network Identifier (ULNI) that used to emulate the dynamic performance of the motor syst.m. The second is the Universal Learning Network Controller (ULNC) that used to control the converter duty ratio so that the motor speed can follow an arbitrary reference signal. In addition to that, the overall syst.m can operate at the Maximum Power Point (MPP) of the PV source. The free parameters of both networks are updated online by the forward propagation scheme, which is considered as an extended version of the Rel Time Recurrent Learning (RTRL). The simulation results showed good performance for the controller and the identifier networks. Promising results are also observed when the identifier network is trained in an environment contaminated with noise.

A common color boundaries tracking method meant for image coding purposes was studied. The method was employed for keeping track of the common boundaries of color regions in function-approximation-based image coding. The method's usage solved the problems arising due to the duplication of tracked color boundaries in bi-level raster images.

This paper proposes a new method to determine the types of function for approximating line segments using an algorithm based on binary search. In the function approximation-based image coding, it is essential that the joint points between different types of line segment be extracted precisely. Through experiments, it is verified that the proposed method extracts straight lines and arcs more precisely than the earlier method.

This is the fourth paper in the panel session of the National Collaborative Task Force on reshaping professional grad.ate education in eng.neering and technology that is more relevant to the needs of industry to ensure a strong U.S. eng.neering workforce. As the final and integrating paper of the panel session, this paper ties together the three previous papers and focuses on leading change for purposeful action at comprehensive research universities to implement this needed innovation into the mainstream of university operations across the country. The National Collaborative Task Force believes that innovation in eng.neering education can be accomplished best at the grad.ate level through a national demonstration project effected by a critical mass of innovative leaders from a strong coalition of universities and industry who are committed to taking purposeful action for reform. The paper presents strategies to overcome syst.mic and institutional obstacles in implementing this significant transformation at comprehensive research universities across the country. Additionally, the paper builds upon recommendations of the National Academy of eng.neering, ASEE, the Kellogg Commission, the Council on Competitiveness, the Council of grad.ate Schools, and other calls for reform in eng.neering education. The National Task Force is playing a key role as change agent for this transformation with industry.

This is the first paper in the special panel session on reshaping grad.ate education to better serve the needs of the practicing profession in industry to ensure a strong U.S. eng.neering workforce for competitiveness. The newly established National Collaborative Task Force of the grad.ate Studies Division of ASEE is taking a key leadership role to enact major reform in grad.ate eng.neering education at the national level to spur U.S. technological innovation, unleash industrial creativity, and enhance competitiveness. This paper addresses the national urgency for reform in higher education to streng.hen U.S. innovative capacity and outlines purposeful action that needs to be taken in transforming grad.ate education to better meet the needs of eng.neering practice for leadership of technology innovation. Further, it defines a road map for change to help guide the reshaping of professional grad.ate education as a "syst.m for lifelong learning" that is specifically designed to support the continuous development of technology in industry and to grow the nation's eng.neering grad.ates as technology leaders in industry simultaneously.
