Alzheimer's is a neurodegenerative disease that quietly steals human memory. This study analyzed hippocampal volume in Alzheimer's Disease (AD), Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), and Normal Cognition (NC) using MRI image slices from the ADNI database and YOLOv8 instance segmentation. We used 300 images to segment the left and right hippocampal. This study focused on volume calculation from five MRI image slices. The results showed 0.98 (AD), 0.92 (MCI), and 0.90 (NC) and revealed significant volumetric differences showed in the NC class (P = 0.045). This suggests early neuroanatomical changes can occur without cognitive symptoms, highlighting the potential of deep learning in the early detection of neurodegenerative diseases.

This study aims to conduct a systematic literature analysis of the recent research papers on the framework of smart campuses in developing countries. We were using Publish or Perish v8 software to conduct the systematic literature analysis. We were using specific keywords such as ‘SMART CAMPUS” and ‘DEVELOPING COUNTRIES from the Scopus database. We got 26 papers, ranging from 2015–2023. After several analyses, we were using 16 papers as the basis of this systematic literature review. Through descriptive analysis, we try to respond to these two research questions: 1) The framework of smart campuses in developing countries, and 2) The challenges in utilizing smart campuses in developing countries. The framework of smart campuses that we used consists of 5 indicators: smart society, smart economy, smart environment, smart governance, and smart technology. Based on the analysis, most smart campuses in development focus their activities on smart society and smart governance. While the challenges come from the lack of expertise, lack of facilities, and uncertain economic condition. Several strategies are needed to support the smart campus in developing countries” higher education.

Primary dysmenorrhea (PD), characterised by chronic pelvic pain during menstruation, significantly impairs the quality of life for many women. This paper presents a modelling and clinical validation study of the novel Nettle™ device for at-home transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) for alleviating PD symptoms. Specifically, we aimed to investigate the electric field patterns induced by Nettle™ and its immediate efficacy in reducing menstrual pain and improving functionality. Finite element method (FEM) simulations, using realistic head models, assessed the electric field distribution, targeting key brain regions involved in pain processing. A single-centre triple-blinded, sham-controlled study involving 34 women was conducted to compare the effects of active and sham tDCS. Results demonstrated a clinically meaningful decline in menstrual pain symptoms in the active group, with medium effect sizes for both pain reduction (Cohen’s d=0.53) and functionality (Cohen’s d=0.47), based on Nettle™’s protocol focused on the electric field within the medial prefrontal cortex. Limitations include the use of generalised brain models and small sample size, highlighting the need for further research with comprehensive modelling and larger clinical trials to validate and understand the effects of Nettle™ as a menstrual neuromodulation therapy. Clinical Relevance— This study underscores Nettle™’s potential as a non-invasive, cost-efficient intervention for PD, with implications for broader applications in women’s health.

To Raw material crisis proves as a serious problem which rattan industry in Desa Trangsan, Sukoharjo is facing recently. To meet its increasing demand, especially for export, this problem must be solved. Utilizing waste material of rattan is not only an effort to solve the problem, but it also has an impact on sustainability of the industry. The purposes of this paper are to explore rattan material in Desa Trangsan, Sukoharjo, as well as to analyze the cycle of its furniture making. The research method used are literature study, observation, and structured interviews with qualitative approach. The results showed that rattan industry in Desa Trangsan has a huge potential to create a sustainable and environmentally friendly industry. Starting from saving primary material usage management, creating secondary products as well as increasing product quality and range. The utilization proves to have positive impact on innovation and sustainable industry development. This activity has directed the rattan industry to maintain the raw material for rattan, so that the goal is “Zero Waste”.

Synthesis and thermal stabilizing effect on polyvinyl chloride of calcium/zinc carboxylate from palm fatty acid distillate: Effect of metal to fatty acid ratio

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) has many applications in construction, such as pipes, floors, roofs, walls, frames, and cables. Since it is easily degraded by heat, a heat stabilizer must be added to the PVC resin before it is molded into final products. Mixed calcium/zinc carboxylate has become a popular PVC thermal stabilizer since it is more friendly than the conventional lead base thermal stabilizers and is relatively inexpensive. This research aims to investigate the synthesis and assess the effectiveness of a mixed calcium/zinc thermal stabilizer in stabilizing PVC. The stabilizer was prepared from palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD), and different metal salt-to-fatty acid molar ratios were employed for the study. The synthesis was carried out by a metathesis method at 10% deficiency, stoichiometric, and 10% excess of metal salt-to-fatty acid molar ratio. The stabilizing effects of the obtained metal carboxylates as mixed metal thermal stabilizers have also been evaluated by standard thermal stability tests. The calcium and zinc carboxylates prepared at a 10% deficiency were found to have high pHs and lower metal contents than those at stoichiometric molar ratios due to the presence of residual sodium soap. Their thermal stabilizing effects on PVC are also worst when prepared at a deficient metal salt-to-fatty acid molar ratio. Increasing the metal-to-fatty acid molar ratio above the stoichiometric requirement lowers the thermal stabilizing effect of zinc carboxylate but has little influence on the thermal stabilizing effect of calcium carboxylate obtained. Synthesis at stoichiometric metal salt-to-fatty acid molar ratios is recommended for preparing calcium and zinc carboxylates as mixed metal PVC thermal stabilizers.

Prostate cancer represents a major threat to health. Early detection is vital in reducing the mortality rate among prostate cancer patients. One approach involves using multi-modality (CT, MRI, US, etc.) computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems for the prostate region. However, prostate segmentation is challenging due to imperfections in the images and the prostate’s complex tissue structure. The advent of precision medicine and a significant increase in clinical capacity have spurred the need for various data-driven tasks in the field of medical imaging. Recently, numerous machine learning and data mining tools have been integrated into various medical areas, including image segmentation. This article proposes a new classification method that differentiates supervision types, either in number or kind, during the training phase. Subsequently, we conducted a survey on artificial intelligence (AI)-based automatic prostate segmentation methods, examining the advantages and limitations of each. Additionally, we introduce variants of evaluation metrics for the verification and performance assessment of the segmentation method and summarize the current challenges. Finally, future research directions and development trends are discussed, reflecting the outcomes of our literature survey, suggesting high-precision detection and treatment of prostate cancer as a promising avenue. Impact Statement — Prostate cancer remains a significant health threat, necessitating early detection to reduce mortality rates. Current diagnostic approaches, particularly in medical imaging, face challenges in accurate prostate segmentation due to the organ's complex structure and imaging imperfections. Convective heat transfer coefficients for palm fatty acid distillate have been measured in a batch stirred tank. The heat transfer took place at a dynamic stage in jacketed tanks with a working volume of 3.5 and 10.0 liters, at temperature ranging from 60 to 80°C and Reynolds number ranging from 1000 to 6000. The results indicate that the convective heat transfer coefficient is in the range of 230 to 680 W·m-2·°C-1. The data fit well with the existing empirical model and can be expressed as Nu=0.5·Re⅔·Pr⅓ where Nu, Re, and Pr are Nusselt, Reynolds, and Prandtl numbers.

3-dimensional printing is an additive manufacturing (AM) method using polylacticacid (PLA) filaments. However, PLA filaments still have limitations such as the hygroscopic properties of the material. This type of filament easily absorbs air from air humidity, so it will have an impact on the chemical damage of PLA. In this research, a composite file storage area will be designed. The method of making this file storage area will use a composite material Medium Density Board (MDF) with a simple manufacturing method. The filament storage area is expected to prevent and reduce air absorption and the lifespan of filaments in PLA filaments, thus helping users of 3-dimensional printing produce better results.

Anode design is a crucial factor for the further development of lithium-ion battery (LIB) technology, especially in terms of achieving high charging rate performance, as typically needed in electric vehicles (EV). In the present work, a unique battery test cell was designed and fabricated to study in-situ the mechanical behavior of the silicon nanowire electrode during electrochemical lithiation using synchrotron X-ray microdiffraction. Modelling of the nanostructured anode was also performed to provide further understanding of the in-situ findings. The combined approach provides further in-depth understanding of the evolution of the mechanics in the silicon nanowires (1D nanostructure) during operation of the battery, and furthermore shows the path for potentially enhancing the performance of the device. 3D nanostructures have been identified as the key to dramatically enhanced kinetics performance of LIB. However, existing fabrication methodologies for 3D nanostructures are inherently expensive – using advanced lithography techniques or other nanopatterning methodologies, as well as using additive manufacturing approaches. Electrospinning (as an integrated additive manufacturing methodology) may be used to produce low-cost 3D-printed fiber structures. This will pave the way to achieve the order of magnitude increase in battery kinetics as needed to realize the vision of the sustainable transportation.

Pressure ulcers are a common problem among older nursing home residents. Wound healing monitoring in these older residents causes intensive significant workload for nurses. Moisture and sebum of the skin are critical factors during wound healing which can observations for nurses quick and handy. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation between moisture and sebum of the skin during wound healing in older people. The data of moisture and sebum was observed for four times in sequence biweekly from the sacrum region of eighteen subjects. Based on the wound healing status, the subjects were grouped into the wound healing, wound non-healing, and non-wound groups. The wound area was calculated by manually tracing the wound area in captured images using the Image-J. Ulcer area were median correlation with moisture (r =.61) and sebum (r = −.60) in the wound healing group. The moisture was also significantly correlated with sebum (r =.89, p © 2020, The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
