An augmented reality approach for communicating intangible and architectural heritage through digital characters and scale models

Intangible cultural heritage (ICH) represents living cultural expressions and practices that are part of the heritage of a community, and their preservation and transmission are considered highly important. Various methods and tools have been applied so far for the digitization and dissemination of ICH content including a wide range of technologies. Mobile augmented reality is a promising solution along this path that enables the overlap of digital and real-world information in an engaging and efficient manner. Despite the widespread use of AR in cultural heritage, there are not many studies regarding the user experience, the learning outcomes, and the way in which users observe and interact with the virtual content. This paper presents a mobile augmented reality installation that re-enacts the stages of leather tanning process, adopting a novel approach that augments 3D content upon a physical scale model of an old tannery. This approach pursues to transmit the cultural value of traditional craftmanship to visitors of the building and associate its architectural elements to its history and use. A user evaluation was conducted aiming to measure the users’ engagement, learning, and experience using the installation. The encouraging results led to a follow-up study about the impact of the physical scale model on the experience. Two variations of the experience have been studied, one with a physical scale model and one with a digital-only version in a between-subject design. The results of the two studies provide evidence that the proposed approach generated a positive user experience and evident learning gain and was considered easy to use, highlighting its potential to be widely adopted in buildings with architectural value. © The Author(s) 2024.

Multivariate analysis of AISI-52100 steel machining: a combined finite element artificial intelligence approach

The present study focuses on the analysis of AISI-52100 steel hard-turning with standardised square inserts. The process is being studied in terms of the resultant cutting force and the cutting power under a wide range of four key machining parameters: the cutting speed, the feed rate, the depth of cut and the tool nose radius. First of all, an updated finite element method (FEM) model has been used to generate a dataset, which in turn was used to train an artificial neural network (ANN), minimising this way the required experimental work and the utilisation of high amounts of computing resources. The developed networks were evaluated with regard to their reliability, revealing increased levels of accuracy. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) was calculated equal to 8.1% for the force prediction network and 11.2% for the power prediction network, respectively. In the design of bodily engaging Mixed Reality (MR) installations for intangible cultural heritage (ICH) in museums, a gap remains regarding how to test low-fidelity prototypes to refine the detailed design and ensure successful final implementation. By integrating bodystorming early in the design thinking process, alongside lab-based experience prototyping, this study proposes a method to foster a deeper empathetic connection between cultural practitioners and the public, thereby enhancing visitor experiences. Focusing on the ICH of wooden shipbuilding, the process involves stakeholders and users from conceptualization to prototype testing, ensuring that final interactive installations are user-centered and culturally resonant. The findings demonstrate how this participatory design approach bridges digital technologies with traditional cultural practices, providing methodological insights for the transmission of ICH and visitor engagement that other designers can adopt. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

The proliferation of robotic applications has been notable in recent years, spanning a diverse range of use cases. Ensuring robot safety is crucial for safeguarding both robots and humans, as well as the infrastructure they operate within. Robots navigating indoor environments are particularly susceptible to hazards ranging from minor incidents to severe damage. Therefore, it is essential to consider potential risks and ensure safe navigation while maintaining efficiency. This paper proposes a path-planning method that prioritizes robot safety and path efficiency. Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) is employed in this method to find optimal solutions that balance path distance and the risks faced by robots. Experimental results validate that the proposed approach significantly reduces potential hazards robots may face in various environments during navigation compared to existing methods. Importantly, this risk reduction is achieved without compromising path distance or accessibility. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper presents a method for the lightweight design of robotic links subject to dynamic loads and requirements on the overall system stiffness. It includes (1) a decomposition scheme to enable separate component optimization and (2) an approach based on topology optimization for optimal load path design of screw connections. In this work, a framework is proposed for the analytical formulation of dynamic equations for serial metamorphic manipulators using screw theory tools. The integration of structure reconfiguration is achieved in a compact and comprehensive manner. Based on the previously proposed modular structure representation, additional statements are provided to strictly define the metamorphic structure assembly. To validate the precision of the extracted dynamics, two simulations are performed for paths defined in Cartesian space. The generated trajectory is evaluated by comparing the dynamic matrices produced by the proposed method with those from an established dynamic modeling algorithm. Additionally, the trajectory is simulated in an open-source simulator, and the torques extracted from system dynamics are compared with the corresponding simulator torques under the same kinematic constraints. © 2024 by ASME.

This paper explores the role of interactive installations in contributing to the reuse of archived knowledge and motivating visitors’ appreciation and value for cultural heritage. It also examines how gamification techniques can be employed to afford playful experiences in an educational approach within museum settings, integrating information and enabling visitors to explore industrial cultural heritage in a more engaging way. The paper presents a case study focused on the creation of an interactive installation at the Industrial Museum of Hermoupolis in Syros, Greece, utilising a non-interactive exhibit, specifically the water pump machine. The introduction provides an overview of the importance of Hermoupolis’ cultural heritage, presents the Industrial Museum of Hermoupolis, and outlines the objectives of the project. Then it discusses the design phases that have been followed towards the implementation of the interactive installation. These phases include the Research and Inquiry, the Conceptual design, and the Prototyping. Specific emphasis is given to formulating the visitor’s experience of the installation by combining the historical content, the interactive elements, the physical objects and the gamified elements. In the following sections, the paper presents the design processes towards the implementation of a working prototype and the evaluation phase. The paper concludes with a summary of the implications of the project, emphasising the importance of integrating user experience and interaction design with cultural content in designing interactive installations. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The involvement of Multi-robot Systems (MRS) in a vast range of missions such as search and rescue, patrolling, exploration and mapping of environments has increased over the years. The working dynamics between MRS and human operators has also evolved to include more human-in-the-loop approaches where the MRS becomes an extension of the human operator(s) to accomplish complex tasks as human-robot teams. This advancement requires a higher frequency of information sharing among the MRS and with the human operator(s) to provide situational awareness so that more informed decisions can be made rapidly. Thus, maintaining communication between the various actors of the team is key to ensure mission success. This paper explores the dynamic challenge of swarm reconfiguration to maintain communication among a system of dynamic nodes-i.e. multiple robots or humans-navigating in an urban environment. Proposed is a hierarchical robotic system that utilises a swarm of Small Supporting Unmanned Ground Vehicles (SSUGVs) as mobile communication breadcrumbs. These SSUGVs dynamically reconfigure themselves through swarm-inspired, path-constrained motion planning to maintain communication within the main system during exploration. The presented solution is verified successfully with hybrid simulations-i.e. a combination of real experimental data with simulated components on a mapping exploration task. The system is studied based on three metrics namely the system connectivity that measures the network connectivity of the overall system, the system response that measures the response of the system to a changing environment, and the average distance travelled of the system that indicates the activity level of the system. The work first demonstrates a design flow that uses open-source electronic design automation (EDA) software and open-access process design kits (PDKs) to design artificial neural network (ANN) circuits. Based on this design flow, a large-language model (LLM) is trained and used to design a three-phase pulse-width modulator (PWM). The three-phase PWM was implemented in SkyWater 130 nm CMOS technology and tapeout through a low-cost multi-project wafer (MPW). This work demonstrates the possibility of using open-AI, open-source EDA design flow to design practical circuits. Sanctions, expensive software license subscriptions, and complicated NDA do not restrict it. All academic institutions and companies should have open-AI, open-source, open-access EDA and PDKs for a sustainable IC design flow. © 2024 IEEE.

Chaotic systems can be employed in hardware to generate pseudo-random numbers, which is essential for a wide range of applications, including cryptography, Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) testing, gaming, and simulations. Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) offer a flexible platform for implementing chaotic-based random number generators, integrating real-time data handling and visualization capabilities. This work presents the design and implementation of a pseudo-random number generator (PRNG) deployed on FPGA based on the logistic map for chaotic sequence generation. The generated pseudo-random numbers are further transformed via a Central Limit Theorem (CLT) function to produce a Gaussian distribution. The system architecture integrates several FPGA modules to support real-time interaction and data visualization: a clock generator, a Universal Asynchronous Receiver-Transmitter (UART) interface, a Xilinx Analog-to-Digital Converter (XADC), and a 7-segment display driver. These components enable the display of PRNG values directly on the FPGA and the transmission of data to a laptop for histogram analysis, confirming the Gaussian characteristics of the output. © 2024 IEEE.
