To create unique selling points in the competitive market of medical radiography systems, systematic approaches for the development are required. In a case study, standard procedures from academia were adapted to the situation of the industry partner. Starting from a requirements list, a relation-oriented function modelling was built to develop concepts with morphological boxes, which were evaluated by a weighted average method. This lead to the elaboration of CAD-based drafts in order to enable more detailed ratings. The methodical approach results in the identification of redundant bearing parts in the floor attachment, the removal of which does not cause any violation of the safety regulations of medical products. A verification with finite element software proved the applicability of the concepts. This example demonstrates that in a situation of highly developed predecessors and a limited design space, a methodical approach can identify improvement possibilities, which leads to innovations and cost advantages. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2017.

The proliferation of robotic applications has been notable in recent years, spanning a diverse range of use cases. Ensuring robot safety is crucial for safeguarding both robots and humans, as well as the infrastructure they operate within. Robots navigating indoor environments are particularly susceptible to hazards ranging from minor incidents to severe damage. Therefore, it is essential to consider potential risks and ensure safe navigation while maintaining efficiency. This paper proposes a path-planning method that prioritizes robot safety and path efficiency. Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) is employed in this method to find optimal solutions that balance path distance and the risks faced by robots. Experimental results validate that the proposed approach significantly reduces potential hazards robots may face in various environments during navigation compared to existing methods. Importantly, this risk reduction is achieved without compromising path distance or accessibility. © 2024 IEEE.

This article proposes a new method to enhance the efficiency of the design process in systems engineering. Our approach involves utilizing a Markov chain based on the design structure matrix (DSM). By creating a transformation matrix using the DSM and converting it into a Markov chain, we enable faster convergence of process iterations and improved decoupling between modules or clusters. The Markov chain is plotted as a tree using a layered layout algorithm and partitioned into communities using the Louvain algorithm. We applied our method to two types of DSM data, i.e., component-based and parameter-based, and the results showed valuable insights into the design process. Our approach is a valuable tool for managing complex systems, especially as systems become increasingly complex and challenging for engineers to manage during the design process. © 2024 The Authors.

The involvement of Multi-robot Systems (MRS) in a vast range of missions such as search and rescue, patrolling, exploration and mapping of environments has increased over the years. The working dynamics between MRS and human operators has also evolved to include more human-in-the-loop approaches where the MRS becomes an extension of the human operator(s) to accomplish complex tasks as human-robot teams. This advancement requires a higher frequency of information sharing among the MRS and with the human operator(s) to provide situational awareness so that more informed decisions can be made rapidly. Thus, maintaining communication between the various actors of the team is key to ensure mission success. This paper explores the dynamic challenge of swarm reconfiguration to maintain communication among a system of dynamic nodes-i.e. multiple robots or humans-navigating in an urban environment. Proposed is a hierarchical robotic system that utilises a swarm of Small Supporting Unmanned Ground Vehicles (SSUGVs) as mobile communication breadcrumbs. These SSUGVs dynamically reconfigure themselves through swarm-inspired, path-constrained motion planning to maintain communication within the main system during exploration. The presented solution is verified successfully with hybrid simulations-i.e. a combination of real experimental data with simulated components on a mapping exploration task. The system is studied based on three metrics namely the system connectivity that measures the network connectivity of the overall system, the system response that measures the response of the system to a changing environment, and the average distance travelled of the system that indicates the activity level of the system. The retrofit of aircraft - the design and installation of new cabins into existing planes, comes with challenges, particularly regarding access to the necessary information. Although aircraft are generally similar, each single one becomes unique over time due to its individual usage and maintenance. While certification requires the changes made to be documented, this is typically done through numerous individual documents that are differentiated by domain, area within the aircraft, revision, and other factors that lead to a fragmentation of information. Engineers rely on implicit knowledge gained from years of experience and common knowledge as well as established structures like the ATA-Chapters, to tediously re-join these fragments and gain an overview of the current state of the aircraft and the relevant documents. This work presents an approach that utilizes ontologies to capture implicit knowledge and combines it with system models defining generic information as well as the definitions of standards that are identical for certain types of aircraft. A web application that functions as an access system is introduced to help engineers filter and identify required information and documents more easily when planning a new cabin. Finally, together with a partner from the industry, this approach is applied to a case study. Copyright © 2024 by ASME.

This paper explores specifically designed workshops, referred to as Knowledge Sharing Sessions (sessions), emphasizing their transdisciplinary nature. These sessions serve as convergence points for academia and industry to collaborate and integrate knowledge, addressing complex concepts such as boundary crossing and boundary objects. The sessions comprised two types: six theory-driven sessions led by researchers, discussing theoretical concepts related to boundary crossing and boundary objects, and four practice-driven sessions led by practitioners, focusing on the means and objects employed by their respective companies to cross boundaries between disciplines in product realisation. These sessions involved three researchers and practitioners from five large and medium-sized manufacturing companies in the Swedish industry. During the sessions, practitioners found themselves challenged by researchers to grasp and reflect upon complex concepts, while researchers faced the task of operationalizing intricate concepts like boundary objects, making them accessible and understandable for practitioners. Expanding such insights can empower practitioners to strategically design objects that effectively serve as boundary objects, thus facilitating the crossing of boundaries between disciplines. Based on the experiences gained from these sessions, the design appears relevant to strengthen transdisciplinary engineering efforts. © 2024 The Authors.

A challenge in product realisation, involving several functions and individuals with various specialisation, is knowledge integration. The purpose of this paper is to advance the understanding of how and when boundary objects can enable knowledge integration in a product realisation contex. Examples of possible boundary objects in the context of product realisation are engineering drawings and prototypes. Boundary objects are situational, meaning that an object may function as boundary object in one situation, but not in another. It is therefore essential to understand under what circumstances you can expect an object to function as a boundary object. Based on literature and the results from empirical studies, a four-step process assessing the potential of an object to function as a boundary object in a specific situation was developed. The suggested ´boundary object assessment procesś can be a way for manufacturing companies to achieve awareness of how, for example, engineering drawings or prototypes can be used to their full potential as boundary objects. Furthermore the ´boundary object assessment procesś contributes to theory on knowledge integration in product realisation, through the compilation of existing but fragmented evidence on boundary object applications. In addition, boundary objects have the potential to integrate knowledge between disciplines, i.e., supporting transdisciplinary work, and through the suggested ´boundary object assessment procesś the possibility to succeed with this may increase. © 2024 The Authors.

To achieve relevant research results, collaborative research is deemed essential in several engineering and management disciplines. When the addressed research questions are associated with larger societal challenges the need for collaboration between various actors and disciplines becomes even more urgent. In this paper, the development of a transdisciplinary research initiative aiming at supporting long-term ability for the manufacturing industry to succeed with the green transition, is described. The transdisciplinary research programme ´GRACE - Green acceleration through integrated and platform-enabled product realisatioń is an eight-year project (4+4 years), involving eleven manufacturing industries and four industrial networks. The research programme GRACE is the result of a close collaboration between industrial partners and academic researcher for almost one year. We have through workshops and various meetings jointly formulated a research agenda, based on eight research issues: (1) requirement specification and management, (2) platform principles and lifecycle strategies on different system levels, (3,4) product design and production solutions supporting circular strategies, (5,6) product and production information management, (7) shared understanding and visions, and (8) knowledge integration, operationalisation and implementation. Based on these research issues, and the priorities among the industrial partners, three initial research projects have been developed. The development of the research programme applied a co-production process, including a distinct pre-project phase. The creation of the transdisciplinary programme GRACE required trust among the involved partners, an open atmosphere, structure, joint understanding among the participants, time to read and think, and some stubbornness. © 2024 The Authors.

Disruptions in supply chains, changing customer requirement, and fluctuating volume demands create a production situation where companies need to have the ability to reconfigure the production to stay competitive. However, to implement reconfigurable production solutions efficiently, identifying the current state of reconfigurability is necessary. Several methods for assessing and evaluating reconfigurability have been proposed previously but as reconfigurability might be unfamiliar to companies, difficulties in profoundly understanding the field exist. In order to aid manufacturing companies in initially evaluate their reconfiguration ability, the purpose of this paper is to picture the introduction of changeability in the industrial practice and aid manufacturing companies in initially evaluating their current reconfigurability. The paper introduces a rapid reconfigurability assessment method that will support this introduction. The tool includes the assessment areas of Modular system, Standardized interfaces, Mobility of Equipment, and Volume/product variety capability, i.e., elements directly related to reconfigurability. To ensure industrial application of the tool, it was tested jointly by practitioners and researchers in multiple manufacturing companies. In the application of the tool, the current ability of reconfigurability amongst the companies was identified and dialogues regarding the development towards a more reconfigurable production was initiated. This enabled the possibility for realizing the adjustments in production to cope with disruptions and changes. © 2024 The Authors.
