Layered vanadium-based materials are promising for rechargeable magnesium batteries (rMBs) due to their tunable structures and high capacities. However, the strong electrostatic interactions between Mg2+ and cathode materials lead to sluggish ion diffusion and structural degradation, limiting their application. Herein, we propose an innovative bidirectional design strategy, incorporating oxygen vacancies and conductive polymer intercalation into layered ammonium vanadate (NH4V3O8), achieving excellent energy storage capability in Mg2+/Li+ hybrid batteries. First-principles calculations reveal that oxygen vacancies promote charge transfer, while the conductive polymer interlayer reduces ion diffusion barriers, thereby accelerating ion migration. Multiphysics simulations demonstrate that the ingenious architecture improves wettability and mitigates stress concentration, enhancing cycling stability. Moreover, dual-salt electrolyte optimization reduces Mg stripping/plating overpotential and improves interfacial stability. Ex-situ characterizations elucidate the dynamic evolution of vanadium valence states and the reversible Mg2+/Li+ insertion/extraction mechanism. This study provides a systematic framework for the development of advanced cathode materials towards high-performance and sustainable energy storage solutions. © 2025, The Authors. In this paper, we investigate a cell-free massive MIMO system with both access points (APs) and user equipments (UEs) equipped with multiple antennas over jointly-correlated Rayleigh fading channels. We study four uplink implementations, from fully centralized processing to fully distributed processing, and derive their achievable spectral efficiency (SE) expressions with minimum mean-squared error successive interference cancellation (MMSE-SIC) detectors and arbitrary combining schemes. Furthermore, the global and local MMSE combining schemes are derived based on full and local channel state information (CSI) obtained under pilot contamination, which can maximize the achievable SE for the fully centralized and distributed implementation, respectively. We study a two-layer decoding implementation with an arbitrary combining scheme in the first layer and optimal large-scale fading decoding (LSFD) in the second layer. Besides, we compute novel closed-form SE expressions for the two-layer decoding implementation with maximum ratio (MR) combining. In the numerical results, we compare the SE performance for different implementation levels, combining schemes, and channel models. It is important to note that increasing the number of antennas per UE may degrade the SE performance. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Due to shortened technology lifecycles and changing customer needs, companies are forced to get their products to the market quicker. To overcome these challenges, agile product development methods have been developed. After being widely prevailed in software development, agile methods find their way into hardware development. The TAF Agile Framework provides a procedural model specifically for developing mechatronic products. In this paper TAF is used for the development of an innovative emergency wearable for seniors and is evaluated using an adaption of the 4-Dimensional Analytical Tool. The development of fault-tolerant quantum processors relies on the ability to control noise. A particularly insidious form of noise is temporally correlated or non-Markovian noise. By combining randomized benchmarking with supervised machine learning algorithms, we develop a method to learn the details of temporally correlated noise. In particular, we can learn the time-independent evolution operator of system plus bath and this leads to (i) the ability to characterize the degree of non-Markovianity of the dynamics and (ii) the ability to predict the dynamics of the system even beyond the times we have used to train our model. We exemplify this by implementing our method on a superconducting quantum processor. Our experimental results show a drastic change between the Markovian and non-Markovian regimes for the learning accuracies. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Strongly correlated quantum systems often display universal behavior as, in certain regimes, their properties are found to be independent of the microscopic details of the underlying system. An example of such a situation is the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid description of one-dimensional strongly correlated bosonic or fermionic systems. Here, we investigate how such a quantum liquid responds under dissipative dephasing dynamics and, in particular, we identify how the universal Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid properties melt away. Our study, based on adiabatic elimination, shows that dephasing first translates into the damping of the oscillations present in the density-density correlations, a behavior accompanied by a change in the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid exponent. This first regime is followed by a second one characterized by the diffusive propagation of featureless correlations as expected for an infinite temperature state. We support these analytical predictions by numerically exact simulations carried out using a number-conserving implementation of the matrix product states algorithm adapted to open systems.

Colour changes can be achieved by straining photonic crystals or gratings embedded in stretchable materials. However, the multiple repeat units and the need for a volumetric assembly of nanostructures limit the density of information content. Inspired by surface reliefs on oracle bones and music records as means of information archival, here we endow surface-relief elastomers with multiple sets of information that are accessible by mechanical straining along in-plane axes. Distinct from Bragg diffraction effects from periodic structures, we report trenches that generate colour due to variations in trench depth, enabling individual trench segments to support a single colour. Using 3D printed cuboids, we replicated trenches of varying geometric parameters in elastomers. These parameters determine the initial colour (or lack thereof), the response to capillary forces, and the appearance when strained along or across the trenches. Strain induces modulation in trench depth or the opening and closure of a trench, resulting in surface reliefs with up to six distinct states, and an initially featureless surface that reveals two distinct images when stretched along different axes. The highly reversible structural colours are promising in optical data archival, anti-counterfeiting, and strain-sensing applications. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Varying only the in-plane or out-of-plane dimensions of nanostructures produces a wide range of colourful elements in metasurfaces and thin films. However, achieving shades of grey and control of colour saturation remains challenging. Here, we introduce a hybrid approach to colour generation based on the tuning of nanostructure geometry in all three dimensions. Through two-photon polymerization lithography, we systematically investigated colour generation from the simple single nanopillar geometry made of low-refractive-index material;realizing grayscale and full colour palettes with control of hue, saturation, brightness through tuning of height, diameter, and periodicity of nanopillars. Arbitrary colourful and grayscale images were painted by mapping desired prints to precisely controllable parameters during 3D printing. We extend our understanding of the scattering properties of the low-refractive-index nanopillar to demonstrate grayscale inversion and colour desaturation, with steganography at the level of single nanopillars.
