An augmented reality approach for communicating intangible and architectural heritage through digital characters and scale models

Intangible cultural heritage (ICH) represents living cultural expressions and practices that are part of the heritage of a community, and their preservation and transmission are considered highly important. Various methods and tools have been applied so far for the digitization and dissemination of ICH content including a wide range of technologies. Mobile augmented reality is a promising solution along this path that enables the overlap of digital and real-world information in an engaging and efficient manner. Despite the widespread use of AR in cultural heritage, there are not many studies regarding the user experience, the learning outcomes, and the way in which users observe and interact with the virtual content. This paper presents a mobile augmented reality installation that re-enacts the stages of leather tanning process, adopting a novel approach that augments 3D content upon a physical scale model of an old tannery. This approach pursues to transmit the cultural value of traditional craftmanship to visitors of the building and associate its architectural elements to its history and use. A user evaluation was conducted aiming to measure the users’ engagement, learning, and experience using the installation. The encouraging results led to a follow-up study about the impact of the physical scale model on the experience. Two variations of the experience have been studied, one with a physical scale model and one with a digital-only version in a between-subject design. The results of the two studies provide evidence that the proposed approach generated a positive user experience and evident learning gain and was considered easy to use, highlighting its potential to be widely adopted in buildings with architectural value. © The Author(s) 2024.

Multivariate analysis of AISI-52100 steel machining: a combined finite element artificial intelligence approach

The present study focuses on the analysis of AISI-52100 steel hard-turning with standardised square inserts. The process is being studied in terms of the resultant cutting force and the cutting power under a wide range of four key machining parameters: the cutting speed, the feed rate, the depth of cut and the tool nose radius. First of all, an updated finite element method (FEM) model has been used to generate a dataset, which in turn was used to train an artificial neural network (ANN), minimising this way the required experimental work and the utilisation of high amounts of computing resources. The developed networks were evaluated with regard to their reliability, revealing increased levels of accuracy. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) was calculated equal to 8.1% for the force prediction network and 11.2% for the power prediction network, respectively. Furthermore, the multivariate interaction was evaluated and visualised. Copyright © 2024 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

In the design of bodily engaging Mixed Reality (MR) installations for intangible cultural heritage (ICH) in museums, a gap remains regarding how to test low-fidelity prototypes to refine the detailed design and ensure successful final implementation. By integrating bodystorming early in the design thinking process, alongside lab-based experience prototyping, this study proposes a method to foster a deeper empathetic connection between cultural practitioners and the public, thereby enhancing visitor experiences. Focusing on the ICH of wooden shipbuilding, the process involves stakeholders and users from conceptualization to prototype testing, ensuring that final interactive installations are user-centered and culturally resonant. The findings demonstrate how this participatory design approach bridges digital technologies with traditional cultural practices, providing methodological insights for the transmission of ICH and visitor engagement that other designers can adopt. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

This paper explores the role of interactive installations in contributing to the reuse of archived knowledge and motivating visitors’ appreciation and value for cultural heritage. It also examines how gamification techniques can be employed to afford playful experiences in an educational approach within museum settings, integrating information and enabling visitors to explore industrial cultural heritage in a more engaging way. The paper presents a case study focused on the creation of an interactive installation at the Industrial Museum of Hermoupolis in Syros, Greece, utilising a non-interactive exhibit, specifically the water pump machine. The introduction provides an overview of the importance of Hermoupolis’ cultural heritage, presents the Industrial Museum of Hermoupolis, and outlines the objectives of the project. Then it discusses the design phases that have been followed towards the implementation of the interactive installation. These phases include the Research and Inquiry, the Conceptual design, and the Prototyping. Specific emphasis is given to formulating the visitor’s experience of the installation by combining the historical content, the interactive elements, the physical objects and the gamified elements. In the following sections, the paper presents the design processes towards the implementation of a working prototype and the evaluation phase. The paper concludes with a summary of the implications of the project, emphasising the importance of integrating user experience and interaction design with cultural content in designing interactive installations. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In this work, a framework is proposed for the analytical formulation of dynamic equations for serial metamorphic manipulators using screw theory tools. The integration of structure reconfiguration is achieved in a compact and comprehensive manner. Based on the previously proposed modular structure representation, additional statements are provided to strictly define the metamorphic structure assembly. To validate the precision of the extracted dynamics, two simulations are performed for paths defined in Cartesian space. The generated trajectory is evaluated by comparing the dynamic matrices produced by the proposed method with those from an established dynamic modeling algorithm. Additionally, the trajectory is simulated in an open-source simulator, and the torques extracted from system dynamics are compared with the corresponding simulator torques under the same kinematic constraints. © 2024 by ASME.

This paper presents chip testing with compressed scan chains and use of SDC timing constraints. Using this compressor and decompressors, multiple number of test patterns can be applied to semiconductor chip for detecting greater number of faults. Earlier, a specific fault was detected by using patterns produced by ATPG for unwanted paths leading to more power consumption. However, this can be overcome using SDC (Synopsis design Constraints). Experimental results obtained using full scan with compressor method and full scan with SDC are shown in this paper. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Multivariate modelling of AA6082-T6 drilling performance using RSM, ANN and response optimization

The AA6082-T6 was experimentally studied in the present research with respect to the drilling performance. Drill diameter, cutting speed and feed rate were examined, using a full factorial design. Mathematical modelling of the process was carried out using the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) as well as the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) techniques. The output results in terms of cutting force, torque and surface roughness, revealed high levels of correlation between the experimental and the predicted data. Specifically, the Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) values using RSM compared to the ones of the experiments, were equal to 2.14%, 3.49% and 6.16% for Fz, Mz and Ra respectively. The equivalent MAPE between the ANN and the experiments were found to be 2.19%, 1.82% and 2.85% accordingly. Moreover, the most significant terms were revealed, being the interaction D × f for the thrust force and the torque with contribution percentages equal to approximately 44% and 42% respectively, and the term D2 for the surface roughness with 51%. The evaluation of the machining parameters, identified their significance, enabling the selection of the optimal cutting parameters, which were obtained by the desirability function, taking into account the importance of the generated surface quality and the reduction of cost. The solutions given by this approach, pointed out the Ø9 tool, coupled with Vc = 50 m/min and f = 0.15mm/rev as a well-balanced combination, whereas the Ø9.9 tool used under the same conditions, yielded the best possible surface quality (appr. 0.2 μm). © 2024 The Authors

Automation has become a major part of assembly lines because of the rapid technological advancement by industry 4.0. Two major assembly line branches are mixed-model assembly line sequencing and robotic assembly line balancing, which deal with the continuous production of various versions of a product and the use of robots to increase assembly line production rates and efficiency. This study examines the sequencing and balancing of an integrated mixed-model robotic U-shaped assembly line in order to improve assembly line productivity. Regarding the limited energy resources and increased price of energy, minimization of robots’ energy consumption is considered as an objective function. Besides that, makespan and tardiness minimization are considered as two other objective functions. The problem is solved by a parallel multi-objective dragonfly algorithm and non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II, which utilizes the strengths and covers the weaknesses of the two algorithms. Computational results indicated the superiority of the proposed algorithm against multi-objective dragonfly algorithm, non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II, and multi-objective particle swarm optimization. An experimental comparison between the parallel U-shaped layout and non-U-shaped parallel and U-shaped non-parallel layouts shows that the proposed layout increases the efficiency of assembly line and reduces robots idle time and energy consumption. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

High-precision CAD-based simulation for turning considering tool microgeometry

Surface roughness is considered to be a critical parameter when evaluating the machinability of a material, as well as the surface quality of a machined part. Thus, a number of studies exist in the literature, that deal with the simulation and prediction of the surface roughness generation during machining. This paper presents a 3D simulation method for turning, considering the full geometrical aspects of a cutting-tool, leading to high-precision simulation of the process. For the purposes of the study, a commercially available, generic CAD system was utilised, namely SolidWorks™. Specifically, the application programming interface (API) of the software was used, to write code that is capable of simulating the kinematics of the turning process. In addition, the surface roughness profile, topography, as well as typical measurements were generated, with respect to machining conditions such as, depth of cut, feed and cutting speed. For the verification of the accuracy of the code, a set of nine turning experiments were carried out, for a specified range of conditions. Finally, a comparison between the experimental and the simulated measurements for the Ra, Rz and Rt was made, showing an increased correlation. Copyright © 2023 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Traffic prediction is vital for traffic management systems and helps enhance traffic management efficiency over a traffic network. Recently, spatiotemporal prediction models have been proposed that extend single traffic node temporal prediction. They employ the spatial context of the combined nodes in the urban network to improve prediction. However, the key performance indicators (KPI) of these methods are still limited to accuracy averaged over the full traffic network. They do not yet describe local spatiotemporal behaviour that can affect the traffic prediction accuracy in the traffic network. In this paper, we explore three spatial KPIs: Global Moran's I, Geary's C, and Getis-Ord General G to evaluate traffic flow prediction for freeway traffic networks. The study is conducted by evaluating traffic flow prediction results in the PeMSD8 dataset using spatiotemporal prediction and calculating different KPIs. Several synthetic scenarios based on the prediction results are created to showcase what the standard KPI cannot distinguish. The Global Moran's I and Geary's C can identify different levels of spatial autocorrelation and the Getis-Ord General G can distinguish spatial clustering in prediction results. The findings aim to improve the evaluation of different traffic prediction methods towards a better traffic management system.
