Our research objective is to examine the impact of aerial tree inspections with micro-aerial vehicles (in short: micro drones) on students' climate education. Climate change threatens the health and survival of trees and forests. Aerial tree inspections represent an important climate change education approach to explain the urgency of climate change adaptation and climate solutions to draw down greenhouse gases. They are also useful tools to appreciate the technical components of micro drones such as external proximity sensors for obstacle avoidance, the fully enclosed propulsion system that allows flight inside dense jungle canopy or the macro-focused high-definition video feed with onboard 10W illumination so that dark areas can be inspected. With such a system, arborists no longer need to manually climb and scale trees. Our research goal is to examine the impact of climate education with micro-aerial vehicles for tree inspections on achieving important learning outcomes such as catalyzing students' climate change awareness and action. We regard micro drones as quality climate change teaching & learning tools that can improve students' engagement with climate change and increase their capacity to adapt to climate change by enhancing sustainability-related competencies and motivating them towards more pro-environmental, carbon offsetting behavior in the context of climate action.

Plastics are key engineering materials for our society and economy, mainly due to their multifunctionality and ease of processing. Nonetheless, their main drawback is related to the fact that when these cannot be reprocessed, they do generate waste, which leads to several environmental impacts. Therefore, considering plastics’ circularity, minimizing their waste, and the resulting impacts, stresses the need for these to be recyclable. One of the main challenges that concern their recyclability is the deinking of plastic films when printed by flexography. The current technology uses non-bio-based surfactants and non-renewable surfactants, which are harmful to the environment. Therefore, the main objective of current research is to develop an environmentally sustainable process for ink removal on printed post-industrial flexible plastic films using bio-based surfactants. This process focuses on obtaining a deinked plastic that may be reprinted, avoiding this way for inappropriate disposal or reprocessing problems. The value increase of upcycling such post-industrial waste makes it possible to match the quality of the virgin plastic, which is key to carrying out an effective cost analysis of recycled plastic when compared to the new plastic films. Dedicated laboratory deinking procedures were undertaken with transparent polyethylene films printed by flexography with different conditions. Preliminary results show the dedicated experimental ink removal procedure using bio-based surfactants to be effective and environmentally sustainable. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.

Methodology to integrate ergonomics information in contextualized digital work instructions

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), often caused by working in non-ergonomic circumstances, are the most important category of work-related diseases. Different methods exist for examining ergonomics through a variety of postural evaluation techniques (e.g. Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA)), which are mostly performed through manual survey-based observations. Consequently, measuring ergonomics of operators is time-consuming and happens only sporadically, often after problems occur. Furthermore, as an ergonomist must assign a score to the performed activity, the ergonomics evaluation is subjective. These problems can be resolved by continuous and automated ergonomic load monitoring methods that directly provide feedback to operators. In order to monitor the operator without interfering the task at hand, a vision-based ergonomics monitoring system is developed. Here, ergonomic features (e.g. joint angles) are estimated based on multiple video streams, which are used to calculate an objective ergonomic score using a standard ergonomics evaluation technique. Although cognitive operator support systems (i.e. digital work instructions) for manual assembly environments are widely used, they do typically not include ergonomics information. The goal of the methodology presented in this work is to a) formulate or update digital work instructions, b) provide the operator feedback on its ergonomic soundness via work instructions and c) generate ergonomic risk level reports in an automated way based on the outcomes of the vision-based ergonomics evaluator. Making the ergonomic guidelines context-aware ensures that interventions occur at the right time. The methodology is integrated in a framework for context-aware work instructions and is validated via a proof of concept, based on an actual industrial case. Results show that context-awareness enhances user acceptance and ergonomics of the operator.

The rise of Digital Twin (DT) and Discrete Event Simulation (DES) technologies in manufacturing underscores the critical importance of accurate data. Without key data attributes, DT models become unreliable for system optimization and decision-making support. Through a case study, this research contributes to the knowledge domain by identifying essential data attributes for effective DES-based DT implementation and categorizing them according to their availability and relevance to various optimization objectives. To achieve this, a mixed method approach was employed, combining a literature review, semi-structured interviews, and consultations with industrial practitioners, including simulation specialists, manufacturing execution system experts, and shop floor managers. The study’s findings reveal significant data gaps when using DES-based DT in the manufacturing sector and, through Quality Function Deployment (QFD) analysis, provide industry practitioners with actionable insights for prioritizing data collection efforts. Ultimately, this research facilitates data-driven decision-making in large-scale manufacturing environments by offering a structured framework for identifying key data attributes necessary to enhance DES-based DT.

Using pretrained word embeddings has been shown to be a very effective way in improving the performance of natural language processing tasks. In fact almost any natural language tasks that can be thought of has been improved by these pretrained embeddings. These tasks range from sentiment analysis, translation, sequence prediction amongst many others. One of the most successful word embeddings is the Word2vec CBOW model proposed by Mikolov trained by the negative sampling technique. Mai et al. modifies this objective to train CMOW embeddings that are sensitive to word order. We used a modified version of the negative sampling objective for our context words, modelling the context embeddings as a Taylor series of rate matrices. We show that different modes of the Taylor series produce different types of embeddings. We compare these embeddings to their similar counterparts like CBOW and CMOW and show that they achieve comparable performance. We also introduce a novel left-right context split objective that improves performance for tasks sensitive to word order. Our Word2rate model is grounded in a statistical foundation using rate matrices while being competitive in variety of language tasks. © 2021, CC BY.

Marine plastic pollution is a growing environmental concern, with plastic debris in the ocean having negative impacts on marine life and human health. One of the major challenges in addressing this problem is the slow degradation rate of plastics in the marine environment. In this study, the degradation of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), being extremely common in marine debris, is investigated when exposed to either (a) marine or (b) atmospheric environmental exposure. The weathering effects for this type of plastic were examined through ultraviolet spectrophotometer and tensile investigations. A chain-breaking activity in the microstructure of the weathered HDPE specimens was revealed. During the investigated eight (8) months of atmospheric and sea weathering, an approximate 10 % and 6 % decrease in ultimate tensile strength σUTS was noticed for the two different environments, respectively. Higher decrease was noticed for the respective elastic modulus E (Young's modulus) that was approximate 23 % and 21 %, respectively. Based on the available experimental test results, a linear decrease rate equation of all the investigated mechanical properties was proposed, to give valuable information regarding the residual tensile mechanical properties of HDPE after weathering exposure. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd. Three different experimental series were performed for the simulation of corrosion attack on aircraft structures. The first experimental series included the investigation of corrosion mechanism for the specimens exposed for different times to EXCO solution on all their surfaces, including the interior of the hole. The second experimental series included the specimens corroded only within the hole, while the third experimental series consisted of the specimens that were exposed only on the surfaces outside the hole. The separation in the above-mentioned experimental series was carried out to simulate the case of damage on the aircraft’s anti-corrosion coating at points of joining of their structural parts. According to the results of the present work, it was found that corrosion affects the different surfaces of the material in a different way, with the specimens corroded inside the hole exhibiting greater corrosion susceptibility (or less corrosion resistance) and the interior of the hole (through thickness area) to play a key contributing role in the total reduction of elongation at fracture Α f , due to the ease of corrosion penetration between the highly elongated grains in this area.

Lithium-ion batteries (LiB) are commonly used sources of power for autonomous vehicles, unmanned aerial vehicles etc. and hence prognostic studies on LiBs are of utmost importance to ensure safety and reliability. Model-based and Data-driven methods are the commonly used prognostic methods in literature, however these methods are severely limited by model and data uncertainties. Hence, we propose a physics-informed hybrid prognostic approach which leverages on the strengths of the conventional model-based and data-driven methods and addresses its limitations to improve the prognostic performance. This work is an extension of one of our earlier works which combined the data-driven neural network model with the model-based particle filter algorithm. The particle filter algorithm was used to train the neural network model and hence helped overcome the dependency on accurate physics-based/empirical degradation model as well as large amount of historical failure data representing the system’s degradation phenomenon. However, the model parameter values go astray after a few iterations which leads to unrealistic and illogical prediction traces. To address the outlier issues, we propose to integrate a physics-based loss function into the neural network model based on SEI film formation in this work and the method was tested on both NASA and CALCE datasets.
