Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have emerged as competitive systems for grid-scale energy storage due to their high safety and low cost. However, the progress of high-performance cathode composites limits the practical progress of ZIBs. Herein, a type of cathode material, ammonium cation-inserted and oxygen vacancy co-modulated VO2 (named NVE), was synthesized through the ethylene glycol (EG) sacrificial solvent-assisted structure transformation. The sacrificial solvent promotes the structural transformation of vanadate to ammonium ios-intercalated vanadium oxide and enhances the number of oxygen vacancies in the resulting material. Moreover, the electrochemical activation process was performed for in-situ construction of NH4+-inserted hydrated vanadium oxide (V2O5∙nH2O) material. The electrochemical activation process with high anodic voltage enables multiple electron reactions, increasing the utilization of vanadium elements and achieving high capacity. Additionally, the hydrogen bonding between the V-O host and inserted NH4+ ions enhances the structural integrity, while the vacancies decrease the interaction between the V-O host and inserted Zn2+ ions to boost ion diffusion. Consequently, the resulting cathode demonstrates higher capacity (441 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1), superior cycling durability (85.6% retention over 4000 cycles), and exceptional rate capability (205 mAh g−1 at 20 A g−1). Besides, the fabricated devices based on the activated NVE cathode show decent capacity and excellent flexible stability. Furthermore, the reversible electrochemical Zn2+ storage mechanism upon battery cycling was evaluated by several kinetic measurements and in/ex-situ characterizations. This work provides novel perspectives for the fabrication of advanced cathode materials for superior aqueous ZIBs. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Additive Manufacturing (AM) technology is constantly expanding to small and large industry over the last 20 years. The vast potential of this technology has been perceived by many companies which invest in research and development for faster and more reliable machines with better capabilities and more quality products. AM expansion in industry has also been helped by a wide variety of materials, such as polymers, whose technology is developing rapidly with better mechanical properties related to stiffness and strength. In this paper we will describe a device which can be fully produced by all AM machines and enables users to measure in a fast and reliable way the stiffness of materials without the need for specialized and expensive methods, large-volume laboratory testing machines, specialized technical personnel and time. The objective is to design a small scaled three-point bending device using design intent through a parametric CAD system and manufacture it using AM technology. The device is designed to calculate the deformation and force applied to specific specimens and the Young’s modulus of the material. The proposed device and its process helps users to estimate the mechanical properties of materials and apply that information on production or in a simulation system to optimize the printing quality of products by selecting the right material and adjusting the related printing parameters of the machines with the mechanical properties of the produced parts. © 2019, IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

In this paper we present the design of the interactions and the user experience of a web platform that aims to assist travelers in planning personalized trips based on personal user preferences and constraints. The paper emphasizes the design challenges and the methods used to elicit information that led to the outline of design requirements. It also presents the design considerations and the prototyping processes from low to high fidelity prototypes of the user interfaces.

The Zero-Defect Manufacturing (ZDM) paradigm will drastically change the manufacturing system and its socio-technological interactions. Following the idea that ‘quality is free’, this is, the cost of appraisals is lower compared to defects, bigger effort will be placed in detect, predict, prevent, and repair. Such activities would require an adequate level of automation. Human operators are the ultimate flexible resource in the manufacturing system, thus should be appreciated and protected. Human Factors and Ergonomics (HF/E) have been studies for decades but not been part of Industry 4.0. To secure a true sustainable growth towards ZDM and Industry 5.0, humans should be the centre of such socio-technological revolution. Utilising state-of-the-art technologies, such as Machine Vision and Artificial Intelligence, and knowledge gained from the ergonomic science field, human-centred ZDM can be secured. In this paper, a RULA-based Machine Vision framework is proposed for the real-time assessment of human ergonomics in shop floor. © 2023, International Frequency Sensor Association (IFSA). This paper considers the control design for a low-cost ventilator that is based on a manual resuscitator bag (also known as AmbuBag) to pump air into the lungs of a patient who is physically unable to breathe. First, it experimentally shows that for accurately tracking tidal volumes, the controller needs to adjust to the individual patient and the different configurations, e.g., hardware or operation modes. Second, it proposes a set-point adaptation algorithm that uses sensor measurements of a flow meter to automatically adapt the controller to the setup at hand. Third, it shows in experiments on a mechanical lung simulator that such an adaptive solution improves the performance of the ventilator for various setups. One objective of this paper is to increase awareness of the need for feedback control using flow measurements in low-cost ventilator solutions in order to automatically adapt to the specific scenario.

Operators in closed-circuit television (CCTV) control rooms have to monitor large sets of video feeds coming from an ever increasing number of cameras. To assist these operators in their demanding day-to-day tasks, AI-driven support systems accompanied by user-centric interfaces are being developed. However, prototyping these support systems and testing them in operative control rooms can be a challenge. Therefore, in this paper, we present a virtual reality (VR) control room which can be used to investigate the effects of existing and future support systems on operators’ performance and behaviour in a fully controlled environment. Important assets of this VR control room include the possibility to subject operators to different levels of cognitive load and to monitor their cognitive-affective states using not only subjective but also behavioural and physiological techniques. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Mobility attitudes and urban form: shaping public transport and shared mobility choices in Dubai and Lahore

Urban mobility in the Global South presents unique challenges for public transport (PT) and emerging shared mobility (SM) services influenced by socio-economic factors, mobility attitudes, and urban form. This study examines the factors shaping mode choice behavior between PT and SM services in four communities each in Dubai and Lahore. Additionally, it analyses the impact of primary daily activities on PT and SM preferences in both cities. Data from 1,653 Dubai and 1,603 Lahore residents were analyzed using four binary logistic regression models. Results indicate that socio-demographic factors (age, gender, household car ownership, driver’s license possession, education level, and weekly commuting trips) and mobility attitudes (ride-sharing, ride-hailing, pro-personal car) significantly influence PT and SM choices. Key determinants vary by neighborhood type, including link-node ratio, intersection and road length density, and car and PT commute times. The influence of primary daily activities (work or study) on the choice of PT and SM modes was found to be moderate in Dubai. The study highlights the need for tailored urban and transport policies to promote sustainable modes, considering neighborhood characteristics and demographics. © 2024 The Author(s).
