Technology integration in educational settings has led to the development of novel sensor-based tools that enable students to measure and interact with their environment. Although reports from using such tools can be positive, evaluations are often conducted under controlled conditions and short timeframes. There is a need for longitudinal data collected in realistic classroom settings. However, sustained and authentic classroom use requires technology platforms to be seen by teachers as both easy to use and of value. We describe our development of a sensor-based platform to support science teaching that followed a 14-month user-centered design process. We share insights from this design and development approach, and report findings from a 6-month large-scale evaluation involving 35 schools and 1245 students. We share lessons learnt, including that technology integration is not an educational goal per se and that technology should be a transparent tool to enable students to achieve their learning goals. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.

This paper describes how different groups of students, in two different design-engineering courses designed or redesigned products in an attempt to make the assembly of the product self-explanatory. The fourth industrial revolution is on the horizon and many design engineering jobs of the future are largely unidentified. Tomorrows product designers must be able to deal with cutting-edge technology, big data and most importantly to collaborate and react resiliently to changes in the Knowledge Age. Contemporary discourse urges a shift towards multidisciplinary teams in which students must be trained to move from individual to collaborative problem-solving practices. This study examines whether the implementation of a group awareness (GA) tool in a third-year bachelor industrial design engineering course can have a positive impact on learning and teamwork dynamics. The participants of the study (n = 33) were encouraged to take part in group regulating exercises. Students were asked to self-Assess the current state of collaboration via a mandatory GA survey, scoring their participation in the group work. After being informed of these results, students were asked to reflect and pose possible behavioural changes on an individual-and group-level. In addition, students received suggestions on how to collaborate through a mandatory scripted peer critique session in which they identified issues, talked about design decisions and created a common ground for further action. The results of the study indicated that the use of the GA tool enabled students to reflect on the different perspectives team members bring to the groups project. This paper discusses the possibilities and shortcomings of implementing a group awareness tool in design engineering education and further research on this topic. © International Conference on engineering and product design Education, E and PDE *** right reserved.

New developments in domains like mathematics and statistical learning and availability of easy-to-use, often freely accessible software tools offer great potential to transform the manufacturing domain and their grasp on the increased manufacturing data repositories sustainably. One of the most exciting developments is in the area of machine learning. Time series clustering could be utilized in machine state detection which can be used in predictive maintenance or online optimization. This paper presents a comparison of freely available time series clustering algorithms, by applying several combinations of different algorithms to a database of public benchmark technical data.

In order to solve the problem that the core chips of domestic protective relaying devices generally rely on foreign imported chips and realize the localized replacement of FPGAs, this paper designs the verification peripheral circuits of domestic FPGA chip through the analysis of the structure and test schemes design of domestic FPGA, including board-level verification scheme and data flow control verification scheme. The communication test and random test are carried out to the IP core of domestic FPGA MAC controller. From the test results, it can be seen that the loopback data and the transmitted data in the descriptor are consistent, and the tested domestic FPGA can be competent for its role in the application of protective relaying. © 2021 IEEE.

Bioprinting is a versatile technology gaining rapid adoption in healthcare fields such as tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, drug delivery, and surgical planning. Although the current state of the technology is in its infancy, it is envisioned that its evolution will be enabled by the integration of the following technologies: Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud computing, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML), NextGen Networks, and Blockchain. The product of this integration will eventually be a smart bioprinting ecosystem. This paper presents the smart bioprinting ecosystem as a multilayered architecture and reviews the cyber security challenges, vulnerabilities, and threats in every layer. Furthermore, the paper presents privacy preservation solutions and provides a purview of the open research challenges in the smart bioprinting ecosystem. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

Integrating product development and production development is a challenging task in the face of rapidly changing product introductions and sustainable processes. Considerable amounts of research and practical efforts have been devoted to achieve increased integration productivity, yet, many modern companies still struggle with this in their product realisation processes. The two prominent product-realisation approaches of product platforms and concurrent engineering focus on improving new product introduction by increased modularisation and improved overlap of activities across organisational boundaries. However, implementing these approaches increases several entanglements and requires efforts in the short-term to gain the desired effects in the long-term. To contribute to this quest, this paper aims to investigate the system behaviours relevant to support required long-term work in managing the industrial practice of product platforming. By applying systems thinking within the system dynamics methodology, specifically causal loop diagrams (CLDs) in a case study within an industrialised house-building company in the progress of implementing product platforming, the objectives were to better understand why the integration challenges are so persistent and if CLDs are suitable to reveal and visualise the barriers to and enablers of the integration of product and production co-development. Two comprehensive CLD models have been developed based on empirical data and model building to extract the mental models of a product manager and a production performance manager, each offering their unique perspectives on successfully managing product and production co-development. Analysing the CLDs provides management insights into co-development between the conflicting perspectives, indicating the suitability and value of the CLD approach despite its limitations. This paper deals with the problem of the selective maintenance (SM) optimization for a series-parallel system. The system performs several missions with breaks between consecutive missions. To improve the system reliability during the next mission, its components are maintained during the breaks. Current models in the SM literature usually assume that when a component is subjected to a replacement, it is done by a new one. This paper introduces a novel variant of the selective maintenance problem (SMP) where a mixture of new and reconditioned/remanufactured parts are used to carry out replacements. It has indeed been proved that remanufacturing processes can extend the life of a product returned from the field. This provides not only economic opportunities but also favours sustainable practices. Accordingly, a novel mixed integer nonlinear programming model of the SMP is developed and optimally solved. The adoption of participatory planning approaches in the deployment of new mobility solutions is rare. In this study, we conducted a community-based planning exercise using design thinking approaches to engage residents in co-creating an Autonomous Mobility System (AMS) for their neighborhood in Singapore. Through this process, a baseline understanding of participants’ attitude toward autonomous vehicles (AVs) was established, along with understanding the residents’ travel patterns and challenges. A co-creation activity guided participants to design their ideal AMS for the local community living in the Punggol residential district in Singapore. The exercise resulted in 20 unique designs of AMS, producing novel ideas such as suitable AV-holding areas and service zones. The results of the design activities provided insights into community-level priority and values. For AMS, providing alternative transport options that complemented existing train and bus services was the priority. As participants co-designed an AMS that fitted their needs as well as the needs of other participants, the designs also suggested that participants valued transport equity and accessibility, especially for the marginalized population, highlighting the importance of a human-centric design approach to transportation planning.
