Innovation has been a major force for improving economic and social conditions for humans. Yet, it has also brought a number of unintended and often unpredictable consequences that affect potentially all stakeholders. Debates over ‘the responsibility of innovation’ have become commonplace in industrial and social forums alike. Technological innovations, especially, are often viewed as a pressure on normative ethics that exclude unrestricted or flexible options. This paper draws upon the outcomes of a 4-day interactive design workshop attended by fifty-six graduate students on the subject of the ‘education of the future’ at a higher education institution in China. Moral dilemmas were incorporated in the project activities during the design thinking process [1]. By imagining the future of education through creativity techniques, uncertainties from the macro environment of the innovation were revealed and used as tools for the design propositions. This paper aims to illustrate how exploring unknown and potentially problematic situations can help students develop an awareness of the ways ethical considerations can generate legitimate ideas for developing questions that could lead to new design solutions. Although the reflections described in this paper are limited to the experience of the workshop, the value of providing a reproducible framework by which design education facilitators may address ethical dilemmas in problem-based learning contexts, is briefly discussed. © 2019 Institution of engineering designers, The design Society. In recent years, rapid technical progress has led to additive manufacturing achieving a high degree of technological maturity that enables a broad range of applications. This is reinforced in particular by the advantages of the technology, such as the production of complex components, smaller quantities and fast reaction times. However, a lack of knowledge of the various process techniques, such as insufficient potential assessment, specific design guidelines or even of process restrictions, often lead to different errors. This paper presents a methodological approach to support designers in the manufacturing process selection of specific parts at an early stage of product development. In a four-stage procedure, potential part candidates are first identified and part classes formed on the basis of characteristics. Building on this, AM thinking is to be stimulated, for example, with the aid of design guidelines. A comparison between conventionally and additively manufactured parts can be made using a simplified cost model. The results are incorporated into a process model that supports companies in the systematic selection of manufacturing processes. © 2019 design Society. All rights reserved.

The development of human-robot collaborative workplaces is a complex problem that has gathered the attention and effort of both industry and academia. This complexity stems from the multidisciplinary nature of the problem. Consequently, the development of workplace and collaboration design methods requires the integration of multiple sub-methods. Efficient measure, evaluation and interpretation of a significant number of variables is therefore necessary without incurring in excessive computation power demands. A number of advancements to hierarchical task analysis (HTA) are proposed in order to improve Hierarchical Task decomposition and complexity evaluation. A simple predictive ergonomic evaluation approach is proposed. Together with PTMS, this simpler ergonomic evaluation method can more easily be integrated in more complex collaborative workplace design methods. © 2019, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. Similaritons have attracted considerable attention thanks to their outstanding output performance in recent years. In this paper, we explored the entire dynamic evolution process of similaritons in an all-normal dispersion fiber laser through the time-stretch dispersive Fourier transform technique. Particularly, the narrow-band spectral filtering effect on the pulse evolution dynamics has been investigated. Two important features have been found during the build-up process: the ‘memory’ ability in the relaxation oscillation state has been partially lost;the build-up time is much shorter owing to the strong spectral filtering effect. Furthermore, the extinction process of the similariton fiber laser is observed and evaluated for the first time as well. An unstable time period accompanied by a high spectral peak over the spectrum is captured during the extinction process, and after this the damped relaxation oscillation state is observed. In addition, the spectral broadening and spectral ‘breathing’ process can be clearly observed in our experiment. These results can provide new perspectives into the ultrafast transient process of similaritons in all-normal dispersion fiber lasers and the dynamics of sophisticated nonlinear systems. © 2022, The Authors. Cleanliness and recycling is a crucial matter for modern cities. As there is an obvious and increasing need to preserve valuable resources and reduce waste and pollution, research is vivid in this area. In this paper, we present our innovative project, the Smartbin, which is using state of the art approaches of Internet of Things (Iot) and waste classification. The design of the system permits the low-cost manufacturing of the final product, while uses state of the art technologies such as neural networks and the LoRaWAN protocol. We have implemented environmental friendly and low-cost Smart Bin prototypes, where the users can monitor each bin and be notified for incidents requiring their attention. The system also remotely transmits valuable data to the corresponding authorities, which can improve their effectiveness in waste management.

Scientists and designers show different problem-solving strategies. Where scientists generally adopt a strategy of analysis;designers are more inclined to solve a problem by synthesis. Instead of striving for a deep understanding and analysis of the problem, a designer tackles a problem by quickly generating a satisfactory solution. Prototyping is one of the tools for designers to conceptualise and realise new product solutions. Fifteen students in their final year at the university following Political and Communication Sciences received an introduction to the programs Makey Makey and Scratch. All participants had little to no experience with programming and prototyping. The reflections on the workshop are described from a teacher and students’ point of view through qualitative interviews and a post survey. Results shine a light on the level of enjoyment, satisfaction and barriers of the students about the new learned tools. We conclude that interactive prototyping for non-designers is valuable and other non-design disciplines can quickly integrate such tools. © 2019 Institution of engineering designers, The design Society. designing products with a focus on self-explanatory assembly can reduce the use of procedural instructions and the associated problems. This paper describes how different groups of students, in two different design-engineering courses designed or redesigned products in an attempt to make the assembly of the product self-explanatory. The design outcomes are discussed in relation to the design context and linked to existing theory on design for meaning.
