The development of fault-tolerant quantum processors relies on the ability to control noise. A particularly insidious form of noise is temporally correlated or non-Markovian noise. By combining randomized benchmarking with supervised machine learning algorithms, we develop a method to learn the details of temporally correlated noise. In particular, we can learn the time-independent evolution operator of system plus bath and this leads to (i) the ability to characterize the degree of non-Markovianity of the dynamics and (ii) the ability to predict the dynamics of the system even beyond the times we have used to train our model. We exemplify this by implementing our method on a superconducting quantum processor. Our experimental results show a drastic change between the Markovian and non-Markovian regimes for the learning accuracies. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper, a new scheme for dynamic relocation in free floating car sharing systems is proposed. First, a heuristic approach is presented for designing a car relocation plan which achieves a better balance between supply and demand in such a system within strict time limits. As being heuristic, the algorithm is fast, further aiding in maintaining fast responsiveness in dynamic scenarios. Furthermore, an on-fly-correction of the original relocation plan is also presented for dealing with changes in car distribution happening in the system due to its concurrent use by the users. Thus, the relocation plan is still effective even in the case that the predictions of future user movements are not accurate.

AUTOSAR consortium had developed a worldwide standard software in the automotive domain, it was basically developed for the single core electronic control units (ECUs). As the demand for computational power is increasing rapidly in the automotive domain to provide a better driving experience, automotive industries are moving towards multicore ECUs. These multicore ECUs provides the higher levels of parallelism by integrating many single-core applications in single multi-core ECU in respect of safety requirement International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 26262. However, there are several challenges when integrating applications to the multicore platform in reaching a highly efficient and predictable design of AUTOSAR based ECU. In this paper, a solution framework is suggested for integrating applications to multicore platform comprising a mapping of runnables, tasks, and applications to the cores. The main goal of the paper is to minimize overall communication cost between the runnables providing the same data flow as in single core ECU and to provide efficient processor utilization. Our results clearly demonstrate a high efficient solution in terms of both communication cost and efficient processor utilization. The experimental results were performed on a multicore microcontroller which is manufactured by NXP semiconductors.

This paper considers appointment scheduling for outpatient services when the service of scheduled patients can be interrupted by emergency arrivals. We consider a single doctor who consults K patients during a fixed-length session. Each patient has been given an appointment time during the session in advance. Our evaluation approach aims at obtaining accurate predictions at a very low computational cost for the waiting times of the patients and the idle time of the doctor. To this end, we investigate a modified Lindley recursion in a discrete-time framework. We assume general, possibly distinct, distributions for the patient’s consultation times and allow for individual no-show probabilities. This fast evaluation method is then used in a local search algorithm to provide insights into scheduling with service interruptions. Numerical examples show that this method outperforms simulation optimization and naive approaches in terms of cost and running time. Continuously increasing complexity and variance within high variety low volume assembly systems causes a vast amount of work instructions. As the amount of new models and variants increases, the need of efficient generation of unambiguous instructions rises. Continuous instruction modifications are unavoidable due to design, customer or process changes. Case based research in cooperation with four manufacturing companies with manual assembly environments points out that assembly instructions authors currently are combining different authoring tools for creating and updating work instructions. Consequently, keeping the rising amount of work instructions up to date becomes less trivial. Furthermore, authors often create work instructions from scratch while instructions of product variants are mostly identical. This causes a large amount of similar work instructions stored as separate documents. As a result, the amount of inconsistent and outdated assembly instructions increases. Poor assembly instruction quality causes frustration and a lower performance of assembly operators. An automatic authoring system and intelligent operator feedback must eliminate these problems. The automatic authoring system provides the author with an overview of preprocessed information and related historical assembly instructions that can serve as a basis for the newly created instructions. In this way, the creation of instructions can be significantly accelerated and work instructions will become more consistent. An experimental lab setup is built in order to test the presented framework. Based on the first tests, the authoring process was significantly accelerated. Further tests within production environments are required in order to validate the presented framework.

Platooning public transport buses on the highways of future Indian smart cities is a method to improve the safety and transportation efficiency. However, research on platooning has experienced an explosive growth but the main obstacle to their practical realization is a convincing safety concept. Along with this barrier, countries like India have more roadblocks for platooning such as poor road, transport infrastructure and adequate law. The most critical issue of allowing automated vehicles (AVs) in public traffic is appointment of liability. In this paper, we have proposed a concept to drive a highly automated bus on highways in public traffic. Very small inter-vehicle distance in proposed system increases the highway capacity and less air-drag improve fuel efficiency. The proposed solution includes main system setup, functional architecture of system and a proposed safety lifecycle for highly automated vehicles.

The overall aim of this work is to explore the possibility of automatically detecting Search And Rescue (SAR) activity, even when a distress call has on yet been received. For this, we exploit a large volume of historical Automatic Identification System (AIS) data so as to detect SAR activity from vessel trajectories, in a scalable, data-driven supervised way, with no reliance on external sources of information (e.g. coast guard reports). Specifically, we present our approach which is based on a parallelised, nonparametric statistical method (Random Forests), which has proved capable of achieving prediction accuracy rates higher than 77%. © 2018 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

In manufacturing, a single batch server can often group a number of customers that require the same type of service. In this paper, a shared queue without customer reordering is used in order to reduce the variability of throughput time of material throughout the manufacturing process which guarantees a global First-Come-First-Served (FCFS) service discipline. This is a significant difference with the more common polling systems where each type of customer has a dedicated queue. The batch server in this paper has a variable service capacity that depends on the classes of the customers in the queue. This paper extends previous work by considering a general number of N customer classes. The standard ISO 26262 plays a key role in defining functional safety of all electrical and electronic systems which are supposed to be used for automotive applications. Distribution of safety related activities according to ISO 26262 among various participants in the automotive supply chain is a challenging task. These activities include item definition, hazard analysis and risk assessment (HARA), functional and technical safety concept etc. Being the most essential step in the development flow, usage of an efficient, accurate and practical approach is necessary for performing HARA especially during development of any electronic control unit (ECU), hardware or software intellectual properties as they are developed as safety element out of context (SEooC). In this paper, a novel safety life cycle is proposed for SEooC development to overcome the problematic aspects of existing safety processes. A novel approach for generic hazard analysis and risk assessment (GHARA) and its optimization is also proposed which satisfies the requirement of the proposed safety life cycle.
