Contemporary market conditions require highly flexible and scalable warehousing systems. This leads to the development of new solutions for parts picking and storage processes. KIVA systems devised a goods-to-man system that uses Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV's) to retrieve mobile inventory pods from the warehouse. This research analyzes the performance of such an Autonomous Vehicle based warehousing system and compares it to the performance of a more traditional Automated Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS). This paper presents a modular simulation model that evaluates and compares the performance of both Automated Vehicle and AS/RS warehousing solutions. The model aims to support decision makers in the design process of automated warehousing systems.

The exhaust manifold bridges the gap between the engine structure and the hot-end after-treatment system, the burned in-cylinder gases are disposed through the manifold. The automotive exhaust manifolds are designed and developed for providing a smooth flow with low/least back pressure and must be able to withstand extreme heating under very high temperatures and cooling under low temperatures. The paper presents a theoretical study aiming to investigate the feasibility of three different CAE approaches and techniques used for the simulation of exhaust manifold fluid flow and the accompanying thermal distribution. The main difficulty emanates from the pulsating nature of fluid flow inside the engine exhaust manifold. To verify the outcome of each solution experimental measurements of the manifold temperatures have been performed. The predicted metal temperature is then used to carry out the thermo-structure durability analysis to evaluate the design of HD diesel engine exhaust manifold which is out of the scope of this study. © 2016 SAE International.

Tunable hyperbolic dispersion and negative refraction in natural electride materials

Hyperbolic (or indefinite) materials have attracted significant attention due to their unique capabilities for engineering electromagnetic space and controlling light propagation. A current challenge is to find a hyperbolic material with wide working frequency window, low energy loss, and easy controllability. Here, we propose that naturally existing electride materials could serve as high-performance hyperbolic medium. Taking the electride Ca2N as a concrete example and using first-principles calculations, we show that the material is hyperbolic over a wide frequency window from short-wavelength to near infrared. More importantly, it is almost lossless in the window. We clarify the physical origin of these remarkable properties, and show its all-angle negative refraction effect. Moreover, we find that the optical properties can be effectively tuned by strain. With moderate strain, the material can even be switched between elliptic and hyperbolic for a particular frequency. Our result points out a new route toward high-performance natural hyperbolic materials, and it offers realistic materials and novel methods to achieve controllable hyperbolic dispersion with great potential for applications. The advent of electronic media, social networks and the transformation of infotainment solutions into an everyday habit has attracted the interest of creative promotion, resulting in one of the highest revenue business of today. The vast number of products and services that need to be promoted through the aforementioned channels has augmented the need for innovative, fresh and foremost successful ideas from the campaign designer perspective in order to attract customers. Towards this direction, a reasoning tool for supporting ad managers in setting up a new campaign is more than useful. This paper describes an innovative approach, in which a video game is developed in order to collect and annotate data from existing ad videos, including subjective information as regards to the impact they pose on the players. Upon collection of data, Bayesian networks are learned in order to create a mechanism for decision support and reasoning on which factors play the most important role towards establishing a fruitful promotional campaign. Due to the characteristics of the collected data, such as sparsity and high dimensionality, we propose the use of a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) Bayesian inference engine that can cope with the above issues and provide a robust decision support tool for promotion experts. Experimental results support our claim that Bayesian networks can effectively deal with domains of high ambiguity such as the task at hand. © Springer Science+Business Media Singapore 2016.

Continuing Education and Personalization of design Methods to Improve their Acceptance in Practice – An Explorative Study

One possibility to establish and foster efficient method transfer from academia to industry is via the heads of professional designers and design students. The transfer and use of design methods in a sustainable way is related to the methods’ acceptance by the user which is accompanied by many challenges. Educational concepts and design method adaptions have been chosen as decisive control parameters among many others in order to understand and evaluate how these can influence the acceptance of design methods in industry. An interview study to gain an understanding of the rationale of educational needs of engineers has been conducted to enrich existing literature in this area. The evaluation of feedback from academia-industry cooperation revealed specific challenges accompanied with educational concepts for modularization design methods. Based on these findings, an adaption was developed and an experiment study was conducted with students as future designers to decode variable factors in design training, gain qualitative feedback to a specific adaption and gain an understanding for the conditions and limitations of an experimental study. Joint conclusion reveals the need for improved education in method transfer and adaptions of the design methods to user-specific needs and paved the way for a series of experiments with various treatments of study participants regarding different personalized adaptions in design methods.

The various problems regularly encountered in urban residential environments can have significant impact on citizen's quality of life, while simultaneously their identification, reporting and management by the responsible authorities entail a very demanding process. Providing citizens with mobile applications for participatory reporting (i.e. crowdsourcing) of problems may help streamline the work of relevant municipal services;such citizen-centric services will make the city smarter through enhanced problem management and request processing. In this article, we introduce two new mobile applications, CityCare and CityCareW, which are complementary with respect to each other and cover all phases of a problem report lifecycle. They incorporate innovative mechanisms that allow the detection of the most critical problems, as well as duplicate problem reports while gamification mechanisms are applied to motivate citizen participation. Trial evaluations have shown that the two applications are user-friendly and satisfy their end-users to a very considerable extent.

Modern value creation is characterized by collaboration of large networks of specialized companies. Due to market requirements and increasing competition, concurrent or simultaneous engineering has become the standard procedure in product development. Still, product development processes often follow the traditionally linear and sequential patterns, allowing for only a narrow scope of iterations. Milestone-driven models are widely used to control and steer such processes. In this article, the authors argue that proper understanding of knowledge flows in development project is an essential aspect to be regarded in design and organization of product development processes. Therefore, a new approach is proposed in this paper which considers the product development process as a set of engineering Activities. Such activities can be seen as instantiations of processes and are the core of any value creation processes. During an experiment a group of students carried out a simple product development project within a controlled environment. The resulting model was then re-evaluated using survey results from a further student experiment. Both results indicate that the activity model can be applied to describe development projects and that it can be used to identify knowledge flows and barriers within development teams.

In Singapore, a large portion of residential electricity consumption is typically used for space cooling. The operation patterns and respective energy consumption of residential split system air-conditioning (AC) units depend on residents’ behavior and are not well known. Singapore's National Science Experiment (NSE) is a nation-wide experiment that involves students carrying a small sensor device to collect environmental data. Over 43,000 students participated in 2015, and the experiment is still ongoing. In this study, we use the Expectation-Maximization algorithm to fit a two component Gaussian mixture model to measured data of temperature, humidity, and pressure to infer patterns of AC exposure. The daily probability profile of AC exposure of Singaporean students was determined. The results can be used as a basic dataset for thermal comfort and energy consumption behavior studies. Derived patterns of AC usage could be used in building energy simulation.

Considering inventory distributions in a stochastic periodic inventory routing system

Dealing with the stochasticity of parameters is one of the critical issues in business and industry nowadays. Supply chain planners have difficulties in forecasting stochastic parameters of a distribution system. Demand rates of customers during their lead time are one of these parameters. In addition, holding a huge level of inventory at the retailers is costly and inefficient. To cover the uncertainty of forecasting demand rates, researchers have proposed the usage of safety stock to avoid stock-out. However, finding the precise level of safety stock depends on forecasting the statistical distribution of demand rates and their variations in different settings among the planning horizon. In this paper the demand rate distributions and its parameters are taken into account for each time period in a stochastic periodic IRP. An analysis of the achieved statistical distribution of the inventory and safety stock level is provided to measure the effects of input parameters on the output indicators. Different values for coefficient of variation are applied to the customers’ demand rate in the optimization model. The outcome of the deterministic equivalent model of SPIRP is simulated in form of an illustrative case.

The role of the physical embodiment of a social robot is of key importance during the interaction with humans. If we want to study the interactions we need to be able to change the robot's embodiment to the nature of the experiment. Nowadays, researchers build one-off robots from scratch or choose to use a commercially available platform. This is justified by the time and budget constraints and the lack of design tools for social robots. In this work, we introduce an affordable open source platform to accelerate the design and production of novel social robot embodiments, with a focus on face-to-face communication. We describe an experiment where Industrial design students created physical embodiments for 10 new social robots using our platform, detailing the design methodology followed during the different steps of the process. The paper gives an overview of the platform modules used by each of the robots, the skinning techniques employed, as well as the perceived usability of the platform. In summary, we show that our platform (1) enables non-experts to design new social robot embodiments, (2) allows a wide variety of different robots to be built with the same building blocks, and (3) affords itself to being adapted and extended.
