Energy consumption in urban environment in the EU accounts for about 40%of the total energy consumption,and the majority of this energy is utilised for heating and air conditioning of *** the process of insulating and retrofitting of relatively old buildings is essential to enhance the thermal performance and hence contribute to energy and carbon emission *** is a need to enhance people’s engagement and education in relation to such issues to inspire and encourage positive actions and investment from the *** paper presents an approach of combining a novel training process using a low-cost infrared thermal camera with small scale building model to promote DIY(Do-It-Yourself)infrared survey for the public to evaluate the performance of their own homes in order to identify any issues related to insulation or air leaks from the building envelop to encourage them to take corrective *** work included the engagement of 50 people to survey their own homes to capture the technical findings as well as their personal reaction and *** results show that 88%of participants have found the educational session helpful to understand the infrared thermography;and 92%have considered the infrared camera to be an effective tool to indicate location of heat ***,90%of participants trust that the thermal camera has helped them to identify insulation defects that cause heat losses in their ***,84%believe that the thermal imaging has convinced them to think more seriously about the heat losses of their homes and what they could do to improve *** experimental thermography surveys have shown that many houses have limitations in terms of thermal insulation which have been identified by the *** DIY interaction has provided enhanced public engagement and energy awareness via the use of the *** financial issues are also found to be critical,as none of the participants would have done the survey

Virtual Reality (VR) has the potential to, not only match the modalities of interpersonal communication for distance-learning but, reconfigure the learning process altogether. To this end it is important to examine VR communication parameters such as non-verbal cue (NVC) transferability and impact. In this study we present preliminary usability and realism evaluations by 32 participants for a Virtual Reality Learning Environment (VRLE) testbed that will facilitate a variety of relevant future experimentations. As presented here, the VRLEs supports a high-fidelity professor avatar featuring a number of NVCs. © 2022 IEEE.

Until recently, physicians conducted several diagnostic gait & posture tests with simple time measurements, using a stopwatch. Nowadays, with the help of AI, such tests have been automated, i.e., performed without the presence of a physician. Application stand2squatAI_biorig is an example of a real time measurement method. In the current research we conducted 26 stand to squat tests, to estimate the precision of its measurements by comparing it against video recording and stopwatch timing. The value of the application under study proved significant, since it outperformed stopwatch timing. Furthermore, it performed on par with the video recording method which required significant post-processing for manually time-stamping the stances.

Continuum robots have the capability to perform flexible locomotion for navigation through tortuous paths. In this paper, we propose a multi-arm robot with multiple flexible tendon-driven continuum robots with magnets to demonstrate how compliance can be used to navigate through difficult environments. Furthermore, we propose an extended mathematical model from the Cosserat rod model to solve for the inverse kinematics of the robot to use motor displacements as inputs for robot control. We show an initial prototype of our system, and demonstrate the proposed robot's movement with an obstacle avoidance and an u-shaped locomotion experiment.

Tracking assembly lines in manufacturing to provide assistance is one of the essential requirement in Smart Industry. Nevertheless, these given assistance and guidelines should be offered to operators when needed. Otherwise, it can be deemed patronising in some cases, e.g., experienced operators may require less assistance than junior operators. Therefore, to provide tailored guidance and assistance in assembly lines, the operators' experience-level should be classified at different levels. In this paper, we introduce three scenarios to achieve the classification of operators expert levels in a real case study (micro-step time-series data from a factory assembly line). We implement a Convolutional Neural Network model for time-series classification, using 5 convolutional layers, max-pooling layers and 5 dense layers with dropout to avoid overfitting. We compare the results of our approach with the ground truth and also with other classifiers as K-nearest neighbours, Random Forest and Naive Bayes classifier. Results show an accuracy of 77 to 98% and 71 to 88% for two of considered scenarios. © 2021 IEEE.

A framework for evaluating a generic virtual commissioning data model

The interoperability of different virtual commissioning applications requires a lot of manual work, as they mainly use proprietary file formats. In this case, a generic virtual commissioning data model is highly demanded to realize interoperability among different virtual commissioning applications. Based on this model, the effort of exchanging data between different virtual commissioning applications is significantly reduced. A comprehensive generic virtual commissioning data model contains a variety of virtual commissioning-related information, such as geometry, physics, kinematics, sensors, actuators, and signal connections. For such an elaborate data model, no method is contemporarily indicated to evaluate its interoperability performance. Thus, in this paper, a case-based evaluation framework is introduced to fill in this gap. With this framework, the interoperability performance of a generic virtual commissioning data model can be evaluated by conducting data exchange of several emulation models developed in different virtual commissioning applications, and each of their specific virtual commissioning modeling functions is covered in at least one of these emulation models. As an example, a case study is presented by exchanging 10 carefully selected emulation models between Siemens NX and Visual Components software applications via AutomationML data format. Based on the case study, the applicability of this evaluation framework is analyzed and discussed. Finally, conclusion and outlook are illustrated in the end.

In this paper, the inertia characteristics of a 2 Degrees of Freedom (DoF) serial metamorphic manipulator (SMM) structure are investigated. Link mass redistribution is utilized as the dynamic decoupling design approach. The metamorphic structure of the manipulator provides the ability to perform mass redistribution, through the altering of the pseudojoints configuration(anatomy metamorphosis). The overall number of design parameters is reduced and simplicity of the proposed methodology is enhanced. The procedure presented, is executed for a 2 DoF SMM and the advantages of the metamorphic structure, compared with fixed anatomy manipulators, are featured. © 2021, The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This study presents an algorithm for estimating the instantaneous angular speed (IAS) from vibrations in low-power embedded systems, evaluated on the use-case of a gas foil bearing. While there are numerous methods for IAS estimation, they have thus far only been evaluated using industrial-grade sensors and data acquisition systems with high computational resources. To boost the application of IAS estimation methods in embedded applications, like sensor-integrating machine elements, this paper highlights and evaluates an algorithm for low-power embedded systems. Theoretical analysis and benchmarks on various low-power microcontrollers demonstrate its feasibility for real-time application. Furthermore, evaluation with lower sampling rates and ADC resolutions confirms compatibility with small-scale sensors typical in embedded systems. For good performance, a typical Cortex-M4-based MCU (e.g. 1.12 ms estimation time using 1024 data points) and a sensor with 8-bit resolution and 6400 Hz sampling rate would suffice. These findings establish the algorithm's readiness for diverse embedded applications. © 2024

Digitalization and sustainability are two central fields of action in the company that are of crucial importance for future business success. The necessary transformation represents a strategically relevant and time-critical task for manufacturing companies that requires an integrative approach in the sense of a dual transformation. Successfully linking digitalization and sustainability enables companies to create long-term competitive advantages in the market for example by developing smart and sustainable products. Despite the strategic relevance, digital and sustainability transformation are often considered separately in corporate practice. One reason for this is that the interplays between digitalization and sustainability in the industrial context are multilayered and complex. This leads to a lack of transparency due to the broad spectrum of the entire research field. Therefore, we conducted a systematic literature review (SLR) to identify similarities and differences between digital and sustainability transformation. The analysis of the existing literature reveals several interplays that both transformation processes have. Based on the core results, we propose a framework for dual transformation supporting decision-makers in corporate practice.

People always envision the future of earth through science fiction (Sci-fi), so can we create a unique experience of "visiting the future earth"through the lens of artificial intelligence (AI)? We introduce Wander 2.0, an AI chatbot that co-creates sci-fi stories through knowledge-based story generation on daily communication platforms like WeChat and Discord. Using location information from Google Maps, Wander generates narrative travelogues about specific locations (e.g. Paris) through a large-scale language model (LLM). Additionally, using the large-scale text-to-image model (LTGM) Stable Diffusion, Wander transfers future scenes that match both the text description and location photo, facilitating future imagination. The project also includes a real-time visualization of the human-AI collaborations on a future map. Through journeys with visitors from all over the world, Wander demonstrates how AI can serve as a subjective interface linking fiction and reality. Our research shows that multi-modal AI systems have the potential to extend the artistic experience and creative world-building through adaptive and unique content generation for different people.
