Strategies have been developed in the last decades to improve the sustainability of produced goods,including cleaner production (CP) as an important approach in identifying problems and propose alternatives for improvement under a holistic *** Serrana city,located at Minas Gerais state,Brazil,has a footwear cluster considered fundamental for the regional socioeconomic ***,the production is still based on outdated management techniques that make it economically noncompetitive and cause high load on the natural environment,which claims for studies supporting decisions towards higher *** work aims to discuss about the results obtained after applying the CP approach in three footwear factories located in Nova Serrana ***,the factories are assessed under emergy (with an "m") and material flow accounting *** show that CP was helpful in identifying opportunities for improvement related to better management that is usually easy and cheap to be achieved,including employee training,updating internal control of material storages,reusing scrap materials,and redesigning the procedure of synthetic leather *** indicators obtained from the used environmental accounting tools suggest two approaches for a decision: (i) when pursuing sustainability under a global perspective,footwear factory C should be promoted since it causes lower load on the upstream processes by demanding lower emergy (3.8 E 18 sej/yr),abiotic,water and air resources (1.13 E6 kg/yr,3.66 E7 kg/yr,and 3.82 E5 kg/yr respectively);(ii) when pursuing sustainability by considering socioeconomic short to medium needs,footwear factory B should be promoted since it has higher efficiency in producing footwear (4.03E13 sej/kg for emergy demand,10.64 kg/kg for abiotic,319.09 kg/kg for water and 3.96 kg/kg for air).This work contributes with practical basis for the environmental accounting and management of footwear enterprises providing important su

This paper presents an information systems architecture (ISA) model that comprises the integration of information systems, technology, business processes and users in public sector environment. The ISA model presented considers specific aspects of the public sector as well characteristics of information systems development and use in this sector found in the literature and in the studies realised in informatic services brazilian State public enterprises. The model proposed was structured with five components: (a) Government structure (mission and organisational culture, Planning and government platform);(b) Public services (considered the " business" of public structure, with the information for citizens, for top level and government administrative technical);(c) Information systems (by including the legacy systems and executives systems information);(d) Information technology (centred in investment policies and the government computational platforms-as micro-computer and mainframe relationship) and (e) Users (centred in the necessities for public-training, adaptation and use of the SI). The model proposed was submitted to validation from informatic services Brazilian State public enterprises. The results point out the relevance of the integrated vision of their components and they permit to establish strategies for implantation of ISA model, in order to observing public sector specificity.

The great urban population growth generates several changes in life style, land use, energy demand and consequent environmental pressure. In this way, studies related to environmental sustainability of urban systems and the availability of natural resources are of major importance. EMergy is considered to be a powerful tool to environmental accounting and measures both natural and human resources to generate products and services. The evaluation through eMergy synthesis of cities, states, nations and its base resources provides large scale perspective to evaluation of environmental areas and can help selection of policies for public benefit. This preliminary study applies the eMergy synthesis to evaluate the sustainability of the cities that compose the ABC Paulista, accounting the local free renewable and the purchased resources that give support to the cities.

The world population is expected to increase to 9.8 billion by 2050, increasing food demand. Fertilizer is one of the key factors that can increase food production in the world. This article aims to investigate the flow of fertilizers among country origin, main ports of entry in Brazil, and international suppliers. For this purpose, data were collected from the Brazilian Ministry of Industry and Foreign Trade, and we analyzed these data using the Ucinet 6.0 ® and Netdraw ® software. Assessing the Efficiency of Sports in Using Financial Resources with DEA Models

This paper presents and compares two different DEA models used to evaluate the efficiency of Brazilian Olympic Confederations in using the financial funds (from the Agnelo/Piva Law in 2011) e transform them into results, that is, medals. We use two different models, in both models the funds coming from the Agnelo/Piva Law distributed in 2011 is considered as an input, in order to evaluate how efficiently these funds were being converted into results by each one. The main difference between these two models is how each one of them used the data related to the number of gold medals offered by each sport in 2011 Guadalajara Pan American Games and also the data related to the number of gold, silver and bronze medals won by each sport during this same competition. The number of gold medals offered represent a proxy for difficulty measure in winning a medal. The first model considered these data as a second input and the number of gold, silver and bronze medals won by each sport were considered as outputs. The second model used only the funds received by each Confederation as an input and it used three outputs, which were formed by a ratio of the first model's output to the number of gold medals offered by each sport. After comparing these models, the results obtained by each one of them are presented and discussed in order to determine the best approach to perform an efficiency evaluation of Olympic sports.

Modeling to Relate Variables in the Context of Franchises in Brazil

The central objective of the research is to propose a model for the comparative study of the degree of relationship between the variables considered as most relevant in the context of franchises in Brazil. In terms of methodology, the research undertook a qualitative survey of the variables, which in a second phase provided a quantitative framework in order to fulfill the proposed objective, through concepts based on multicriteria methods, performance measurement systems, and linear correlation. Resulting from the practical implementation proposed for the General Food category, it was found that only two constants, denoted “Average Initial Investment” and “Financial Obligations,” are directly related to the base variable defined by “Gross Revenues.” © 2015, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

This paper intends to discuss the concepts of knowledge, information and data and their use on a Competitive Intelligence process. An information concept is presented and the information science influences on the way that it has been used, as so data gathering as internal expert service process support. A relationship between the Competitive Intelligence process approach and the use of the established resources for information process using electronic media is displayed. There is a difference among data, information and knowledge taking the reader up to the Competitive Intelligence and Knowledge Management concepts found at current literature over this subject. A user connection to knowledge is described in order to make a distinction between the knowledge universe and the user universe, taking the recorded knowledge as a “bridge” connecting both universes. The knowledge universe access way is taken by the language that is in use, while at user universe is represented by the retrieval system that is adopted. A discussion over the frontiers and aspects of each universe is held, as well as the condition for inter-relationship, resulting in an idealistic representation for the user and knowledge relationship. Finally, this paper presents a few points that illustrate the Information Science contributions for the Knowledge Management process.

The aim of this paper was to study three variables in hydrogen peroxide bleaching of cotton fabrics： the amount of hydrogen peroxide （H2O2）, peroxide stabilizer （Na2SiO3） and the process temperature. The factorial planning of two levels and three factors was done in order to obtain an optimized recipe for subsequent comparison with commons recipes used in industry. Were evaluated the brightness （DL）, energy consumption （dQ）, H2O2 residual （Rox）, processing time and ecological costs.

The paper was monitored the conductivity （g.L＂l of NaCI）, the absorbances values （Abs） and the amount of TOC （total organic carbon）, before and after five consecutive dyeings made with reuse water, obtained from treated effluent by UV/H202 photocatalysis. All rates of decolorization were above 92%, the removal of total organic carbon was above 89% in all treatments and the economy of NaCI was from 3.10 in the first recipe, 3.17 in the second, 3.49 in the third, 3.79 in the fourth and 4.05 in the fifth recipe. The five dyeings compared with same dyeings made with deionized water presented a color deviation （AE＊） below 1. The conventional dyeings would consume 80 L/kg against 40 L/kg used in the dyeing process proposed in this study, representing a great economy of water, with no discharge of effluents.

A Multi-Criteria Approach to Assess Interconnections Among the Environmental, Economic, and Social Dimensions of Circular Economy

The debate about the negative impacts that production and consumption cause on the environment is in vogue. Strategies that point to a sustainable, healthy, and resilient path are being sought. One of these paths is the Circular Economy, which emerges as an alternative to reduce the socio-environmental impacts caused by the linear model of production-use-disposal, presenting opportunities to generate revenue, income, and wealth with circular processes. However, despite the circular economy being considered an essential strategy to improve overall performance toward sustainability in its three dimensions, recent research has shown that the predominant focus of circular approaches is on the economic and environmental dimensions. At the same time, the social aspects are little explored. This article addresses this problem, aiming to explore the environmental, economic, and social aspects of circular economy in three economic blocs from 2000 to 2020 using the Five Sector Sustainability Model, establishing a baseline to co-create an equitable and regenerative future. The results showed that ASEAN in the year 2000 occupied the first position in the general ranking, while the European Union had the best classification in the economic sector and Mercosur was the best ranked regarding social benefits. In 2020, while the European bloc was better positioned in the general ranking, the South American bloc occupied the last post in almost all sectors. Comparatively, the highest-ranked bloc in 2020 in overall sustainability is more in line with the UN SDG due to circular actions oriented towards the three fundamental pillars of sustainability. © 2023, The Authors.
