Industry 4.0 has drawn the attention of researchers around the world for its potential ability to increase competitiveness of the companies that can use it. Although much research has emphasized the technological aspect, little attention has been paid to the challenges and opportunities that the companies which intend to implement it expect to face. Based on secondary data this paper involved a research made with 135 companies in Ireland, 246 in Brazil and 305 in Argentina, to study the expected benefits and internal and external barriers that these 686 have in relation to the implementation of Industry 4.0. The practical implication and originality of this study is to present common points and some differences that these companies have, so researchers can guide their studies to try to overcome the main barriers, improving potential opportunities and helping to link research with practice more effectively. © 2019, Computers and Industrial engineering. Cloud computing is considered a paradigm both technology and business. Its widespread adoption is an increasingly effective trend. However, the lack of quality metrics and audit of services offered in the cloud slows its use, and it stimulates the increase in focused discussions with the adaptation of existing standards in management services for cloud services offered. This article describes the EMSCloud, that is an Evaluative Model of Cloud Services following interoperability standards, risk management and audit of cloud IT services. Aims to present that is possible to assess the life cycle of services offered in the cloud in the technical dimensions of usability, good practices and economic viability.

ABSTRACTHybrid energy projects are gaining global interest due to their potential to promote sustainable development. This study addresses a gap in the literature by proposing a stochastic model that assesses the economic feasibility of a hybrid energy system combining wind, photovoltaic generation, and battery storage. Unlike traditional deterministic approaches, the model incorporates uncertainties in key financial and operational variables, improving decision-making in real-world conditions. The optimization framework integrates Design of Experiments (DoE), Response Surface Methodology (RSM), and the Desirability function to balance economic return and financial risk. By maximizing the mean and minimizing the variance of the Net Present Value (NPV), the model identifies an optimal system configuration with 92% wind energy, a demand level of 230 kWh/month, and lithium-ion battery storage. This approach reduces computational complexity and enhances hybrid system viability in regions with strong wind resources, providing a valuable tool for investors and policymakers in sustainable energy planning.

The goal of this paper is to show a study to evaluate the possibility of using ontologies to support maintenance procedures in IT equipment in a small power company. The aim is to improve the degree of reliability in detection of potential failures and defects in maintenance processes of information technology critical assets, trying to obtain less downtime of services that they provide. The methodological procedures used in this study were literature review, to present the modeling concepts of knowledge focused on ontologies creation and state of the art in building of field procedures describing the steps from initial drafting of ontology finishing with their tests. The results demonstrate that it is viable to utilize this technique, where the network equipment that keeps critical services require high level of availability on meeting the needs of the corporation.

The world population is expected to increase to 9.8 billion by 2050, increasing food demand. Fertilizer is one of the key factors that can increase food production in the world. This article aims to investigate the flow of fertilizers among country origin, main ports of entry in Brazil, and international suppliers. For this purpose, data were collected from the Brazilian Ministry of Industry and Foreign Trade, and we analyzed these data using the Ucinet 6.0 ® and Netdraw ® software. This paper aims at exploring how some factors identified in the PSS and product/service innovation literature can hinder or foster sustainable PSS implementation in developing countries, since there is a lack of knowledge concerning the characteristics of PSS transition processes in different contexts. The identified factors were investigated empirically, through two PSS solutions located in an emerging economy. The main results demonstrated the role of some potential factors in supporting the implementation and diffusion of PSS solutions, especially those related to the involvement of multiple actors in the value creation and the social embeddedness. However, the role of those factors still need to be investigated in future works, since only two cases were analyzed in this research. Analyses of successful and unsuccessful PSS cases as well as the identification of other factors and characteristics of PSS implementation in different contexts are directions for further research.

This study aims to investigate the influence of Product-Service-Systems on sustainability in small rural communities. The methodological approach is a case-based research. A case of olive processing in the Mantiqueira mountain range community, an inland region from Brazil, is in-depth analyzed. This case is a result-oriented PSS deployment that brings some insights on the creation of new business ecosystems, previously unfeasible due to the large amount of hectares dominated by small proprieties with intensive familiar farming labor. Some aspects of this PSS business model on producing olive oil more intensively introduced in the region by 2012 are the access to more financially viable technologies; financing and partnerships with government; on distance labor training possibility and compact equipment automation for olives processing. It enables new businesses previously limited to producers with large investment possibilities. In addition, it collaborates with the local economy, adding value to products offered by the farmers, promoting sustainable land management through the waste reuse and encourages tourism, job creation and skilled labor training, collaborating with progress in small agricultural towns in the inland.

Mainstream Traffic Flow Control (MTFC) with Variable Speed Limits (VSL) is a freeway traffic control method which aims to maximize throughput by regulating the mainstream flow upstream from a bottleneck. Recent studies in a macroscopic simulator have shown optimal and feedback MTFC potential to improve traffic conditions. In this paper, local feedback MTFC is applied in microscopic simulation for an on-ramp merge bottleneck. Traffic behavior reveals important aspects that had not been previously captured in macroscopic simulation. Mainly, the more realistic VSL application at specific points instead of along an entire freeway section produces a slower traffic response to speed limit changes. In addition, the nonlinear speed limit-flow relation observed in the microscopic model is more pronounced than what was observed at the macroscopic level. After appropriate modifications in the control law significant improvements in traffic conditions were obtained.

Product-Service Systems (PSS) have been discussed as promising business strategies towards a circular economy (CE). However, PSS solutions are not necessarily more sustainable. PSS lifecycle management may play an important role to improve the offering and achieve sustainability benefits. Nevertheless, bottom-up issues for CE implementation in the industry such as lifecycle management are still little discussed in the literature. In this sense, this paper aims to explore a PSS business strategy adopted by a large white goods manufacturer that transitioned from a linear to a circular business, and the practices applied throughout the entire lifecycle that may be valuable to achieve CE requirements. A case-based approach was employed in this study and multiple sources of evidence were considered. Data were analyzed in the light of the literature, considering an inductive approach. The main preliminary findings suggest that resources consumption reduction and cost savings can be obtained through lifecycle management practices that take into consideration CE issues since the beginning of life of the PSS offering. Design practices, the adoption of different strategies at the end of life (reuse/remanufacturing or recycle), and the implementation of cleaner production practices are some of the identified practices that can contribute to achieve resource efficiency and CE requirements. This is a work in progress and further work is going to focus on a quantitative analysis of the environmental and economic performance of this PSS. In addition, as this study focused on a use-oriented PSS, future research may compare lifecycle management practices adopted by other and distinct PSS categories, and how different lifecycle management practices may contribute to achieving resource efficiency.

The soybean complex is one of the largest agribusiness sectors in Brazil. Growers are distributed in different regions of the country and far from cargo ports. The state of Mato Grosso accounts for the largest number of soybeans grown in Brazil and is responsible for around 30% of Brazil's production. The commercialization and distribution of soybean crops are controlled by trading companies who make decisions on exports and the destination of soybean exports. The objective of this work is to determine the influence of trading companies in the Mato Grosso soybean network. To this end, we conducted a network analysis using social networking analysis tools. The results show that two trading companies centralize the commercialization between the Mato Grosso growers and the buyers, and five countries are the major destination of Mato Grosso soybean exports. © ILS 2018 - Information Systems, Logistics and Supply Chain, Proceedings.
